What an honor to chat with Denny Sargent about his magical history, his childhood and teenage experiences with Magic would make for a good movie or at the very least a great book (hint hint Denny). Never before have I heard the formation of the Horus Maat Lodge explained from someone who was actually there!
I wanted to put this episode up as a post as Denny has produced so much material over the years all coming out of his practice and his search for knowledge. So, it is a good opportunity to draw attention to his older books and put them in the spotlight. As I think after hearing the podcast and seeing how at the center of things Denny was, he is an absolute treasure trove of experience, and we are very lucky he continues to share so generously. So, after the podcast I have listed out Dennys current available courses at Perseus and also listed his books. You will see how varied they are and from listening to the podcast you will know how he managed to develop such a wide skill set.
If you are involved in esoteric systems, Hermetic magick or any type of mysticism, you are likely aware that every Western occult order and group at some point in their initiatory progression insists on your discovery and bonding with your Holy Guardian Angel, and not just in Western Magic. I am a long-term initiated Tantric in the Nath Tantrika lineage and Uttara Kaula lineage. In Tantra the process of bonding with your Guardian is very much the same as it is in Western occultism, but the Guardian Angel is called the Guardian Spirit or Atman in Tantra. In mystical islam it is also called the Guardian Angel, and many other esoteric traditions include this mystical Self as Jung called it, as being the key to all gnosis and illumination. I can attest that this is true and I will show you step by step.
So, why are we on this planet? Is there a purpose or plan to our lives? How can God help you understand this plan and your place in it? Your Guardian Angels is God’s most direct and personal answer to these questions. Your Guardian Angel exists to help you, explain to you, and guide you through the divine plan that you embody. If you follow the path provided for you, with the help of your HGA you will find real happiness, real peace, and real freedom; the goals of life. The key is to find your true will, the plan that divinity has provided for you, and follow it. But where do you start? By forming a solid and real connection with your Guardian Angel.
The goal of these classes is to prepare you, guide and clearly show you how you can make a deep, personal, life-changing bonding with your Guardian Angel and so follow your magical path, plan, and true will. This being is your personal. direct connection with God. It is, in fact, a spark of God inside you. This being is patiently guiding you and helping you every day, though you may not be conscious of it. Your HGA loves you deeply, no matter what you do or who you are. It was born with you and will never abandon you and will help you transition into another life when you die. You can call upon this being for real help and guidance at any time once you connect with it.
In Course 1 we learn about the history of Angels and especially the Holy Guardian Angel. You are introduced to the amazing world of the HGA and the fact that almost every religion and faith recognizes the Guardian Angel or Guardian Spirit, a spark of God that you were born with whose whole goal is to help you, guide you, inform you and follow you from birth to death, and how if you choose to recognize it, you can reach out to it and embrace it. If you do so with love and will, your HGA will reach towards you and do everything it can to help and mentor you. You are taught specific exercises to enable this process to take place.
This is the final course in the three stages of becoming one with your Guardian Angel – the penultimate experience of union with your HGA awaits you. The Term Hieros Gamos is key here, it means the divine ‘Sacred Marriage,’ in this case, complete union with your higher Self or HGA. The term is used in Alchemy to denote the goal or end of the alchemical working. In legend this is the making of gold from lead, the truth is it is changing the Lead of your mundane life into the Gold of union with the divine. This is why the HGA is often assigned to Tiphereth, the solar center of the Tree of Life. This is a good meditation as you move forward.
To prepare you for this event you have been working towards, let me briefly mention the keys that will unlock this experience.
You must confront and understand your Shadow. the dark side of your soul or psyche that is paired with the glowing divinity of your being, your Guardian Angel. You will see and understand that these two haves are really a whole, your very being, and they must both be accepted and accepted. There can be no light without dark and no dark without light, every mountain has a light side and a shadow, this is why the Yin Yang has a flowing light/dark swirl to it.
The way forward to accepting and releasing any fixations on your Shadow lie in confronting the Kleshas, Sanskrit for ‘knots’ that have to be unraveled and understood.
You will also use the Chakras to align your body and soul with the HGA, researching these things will help you.
In the end you will do the great operation or ritual known in occult circles as the Knowledge & Conversation with the Guardian Angel.
All magical banishing comes from the same concept in all religions and magical practices around the world; Negative magical feelings, emotions, entities, ghosts, or energies that do not belong or hinder or hurt or distract from magical work are ritually removed to engender successful magical work. Spiritual hindrances are swept away in a sense. Much as we clean our house or temple before we begin magical work, so too should banishing be an integral part and included in magical work.
I have traveled to over 20 countries and have witnessed or been a part of many such rites with a variety of priests and shamans and every one of these adepts do some form of magical banishing before the rite and many are very different jet follow the same concepts.
Some include prayers, chants of words of power, some use drums, bells, feathers or pollen and still others burn incense or herbs, some use blessed water or oils, others use salt or crystals or sacred items, and many use fire or smoke to magically cleanse. In this course we will examine and sort out the many kinds of magical banishing by the five sacred elements of magic: AIR, FIRE, WATER, EARTH and SPIRIT.
From Haiti to Egypt, this book analyzes the common themes and archetypal symbols of higher ritual so that readers can define how these archetypes play out in their own lives. It enables the construction of personal, living rituals and includes photographs of actual rituals from around the world.
The Magical Garden is a curious little book of magic, charms, spells, and bits of traditional and historical lore from and for magical gardens and the curious gardeners who tend to them. What gardener would not want to know the flower they were born under, the traditional magical meanings of bells and chimes, or the healing power of geraniums? Many of these nuggets of wisdom and magic have been handed down from Sophia’s grandparents, who extensively used herbs and such in their psychic work. Avid gardener and ancient historian Denny Sargent collected much of the information included here from a wide variety of traditional sources. Roman, Celt, Norse, and Japanese gardeners all believed in garden magic, and some of their most fascinating traditions, spells, and charms are contained in this wonderful little book. In addition to the garden, magical plants, birds, insects, the yard, and the weather are also addressed. Other interesting lore includes: Garden sprites, fairies, and elves; Ancient and magical ways for empowering the garden by planting certain plants in special places; Traditions for celebrating festivals in the garden, ways of using garden plants for protection, and techniques for invoking positive energy with trees.

Have you ever wondered why you don’t feel entirely alone even when you are? Maybe it’s because you really aren’t. And if you attune yourself to that being of light that resides beside you, behind you, and in front of you, you will meet your constant companion, whose sole purpose is to guide you through life: your very own Guardian Angel. The time spent with your Guardian Angel here on earth can help you to reap great benefits during this lifetime. Denny Sargent writes, “In my academic and personal research, I came upon the concept of the Guardian Angel a number of times over the years. I was amazed to discover instructions on how to “meet” your Guardian Angel that were thousands of years old. This changed my entire life. I no longer had to look to others for spiritual authority or wisdom. Then I discovered that every culture had within it the concept of a Guardian Angel or Guardian Spirit, or Ally. The idea transcends time and culture; it is universal. I felt that this “secret” should not be left hidden and obscure but should be dusted off, simplified, and offered to all.” Your Guardian Angel and You is a thoroughly intriguing read about the fascinating history of the Guardian Angel, why you need one, and how to prepare to meet yours. In fact, if a feeling of dread ever kept you from taking a turn down a certain road, getting in a car, or taking a certain flight, you may already have met your Guardian Angel. Once you establish, nurture, and expand your relationship with your Guardian Angel, you can expect terrific things in return. Ask specific questions and receive specific answers. Define and refine your dreams. Lean on the wisdom and insight of your Guardian Angel to give you a form of heaven on Earth right now where your dreams can be lived.
As a culture we are driven to acquire, amass, get, use, devour, taste, and try. And of course, it is never enough. Until we figure out that enough is enough, we will never lead a fulfilling life. Unless we let go of possessions, attitudes, emotions, old lovers, or old ideas, we’ll never be able to make true changes.
While we’ve gotten very good at taking, consuming, hoarding, devouring, overworking, and inputting more and more and more, we have forgotten how to eliminate, release, and renew—concepts that are imprinted in every cell of our bodies. We need to relearn what our ancestors knew: how to banish.
Banishing is the identification and naming of people, things, forces, feelings, thoughts, or ideas that are negative or harmful in one’s life and, through the strength of will and positive power, i.e. love, taking command over these negatives and tossing them out. Denny Sargent, an eclectic ritualist, interweaves his personal testimonial with the theory of banishing harmful factors from our physical environment as well as from our bodies, hearts and minds—through the elements of air, fire, water, earth, and spirit. He also provides more than 100 banishing exercises and rituals, based on traditional practices performed throughout time and around the world.
Nowhere are religious traditions more uniquely tied to the historical, cultural and spiritual identity of a people then in Japan. Almost all Japanese follow one intertwined religious mixture of Shinto, Matsuri and Buddhism. This forms the basis of much of their culture. To know this is to know Japan. Dancing with Spirits is an intellectual but accessible ‘travel guide’ through the history and fun reality of the most important Shinto, Matsuri and Buddhist festivals of Japan. It features entertaining first-hand accounts of wild revels like Tanabata and Setsubun, but it also offers something more; the history of the these festivals and explanations of the symbolism and meaning behind them, things that even many of the Japanese revelers themselves often don’t know. Other aspects of Buddhism, Matsuri and Shinto are covered within these pages as well, from a succinct history of the origins of these great traditions in Japan to chapters about specific deities and Amulets. Come and leap into the amazing world of Shinto, Matsuri and Buddhism and the ‘floating world’ of Japanese rituals and folklore as it is being celebrated today! Dozo!
Serpents have always been both venerated and feared throughout the world, but perhaps none so much as the Naga in Hindu, Tantric and Buddhist traditions. What are the Naga? They are the Serpent Lords of ancient times, more akin to the Orishas of Santeria than to the remote gods of Olympus. And, like the Orishas, they are far more accessible.
Naga Magick is more than a mythic and historical account of the Naga. It is also a Naga ‘Grimoire’ of practical and spiritual rituals.
Serpent spirits are seen everywhere in Asian iconography and practices, but because of the extremely ancient and ‘grass roots’ origin of their worship, they are only rarely mentioned in traditional religious texts. This parallels the prehistoric worship of similar serpent spirits across the ancient world in many places under many names. In most Eastern and Western animist or pantheist traditions, serpent-demigods are positive beings manifesting as spiritual guardians. Often these spirits are associated with springs, rivers, lakes and oceans as well as the numinous chthonian world below, as are the Naga. Naga wisdom has the power to enlighten us about the ancient, often forgotten serpent spirits, their magick rituals and their place in helping us to heal Nature.
Whether you wish to learn the history and mythos of the Serpent Spirits, or if you wish to work directly with these luminous beings, Naga Magick provides unique access to the power and wisdom of the Naga Lords.
The word ‘Tantra’ has two important and specific meanings. One is ‘To Weave’, and the other is ‘A Sacred Book of Magick.’ What do we weave? It is our innermost self (our Atman or Higher Self), and the magickal world of Maya swirling about us. In short, we embrace and change reality as we do our True Will. Surprising to most, Tantra does not mean ‘sex’, though free-flowing, open, spiritual sexuality is part of Tantra. Tantra is ‘occult’ (hidden wisdom), not religious worship. In India, Tantra is often seen as a ‘left hand path’, much as Magick is viewed in the West.
The practice of Tantra reaches back thousands of years, and predates the spread of Aryan patriarchal and hierarchical customs, and strict religious edicts. Tantra is Magick. It is not a religion like Hinduism, though both share a sometimes uneasy coexistence. Hindus pray to and honor the gods at the direction of Brahmin priests, while every Tantric is a god doing his or her own will, and works with the gods and goddesses on an equal footing. Castes, taboos and proscribed sins are rejected by Tantrics. Tantra is about real freedom—doing your True Will as the star within you is called to do. It is about following your own unique path without accepting dogma, religious texts, taboos or social classes. It requires only a strong, independent will, and a fiery desire for spiritual advancement and liberation. It calls for the embrace of intense practices to develop deep, personal relationships with the gods and goddesses you are drawn to, and the mastery of real magick to cause change in your life and the reality about you.
If you prefer to follow the teachings and dictates of a religion, Tantra is not what you seek. But if you are a unique star who wills to craft your own world with love, will and magick, Tantra is for you, and all the gods and goddesses will aid your work.
Gurudev Dadaji Mahendranath summed the entire ethos of Tantra into one phrase: The will to love is the law to live.

The Three Transformations – Free Course
The ancient Chinese sages spoke of jing, chi and shen. The Hermeticists of old spoke of vital, astral and mental energies. Both spoke of ways to convert one energy into another. And the Three Transformations were born!
Ever wonder how to do this exactly? Wonder no more. It turns out this is not some mysterious thing that exists only for the greatest of saints. All the details behind how to convert one of the basic natal energies into another, why you would want to perform the Three Transformation and the various issues involved are included in this SixtySkills course.
I am continually surprised, pleasantly, by the generosity of practitioners I come into contact via Perseus Arcane Academy. Here we have a post that is over 12,000 words of generous sharing, there was no need for Darryl to share so much but he chose to over deliver in the best way possible. Even in our discussions prior to an interview he provided generous explanations for his approach with through and well thought out reasoning. This blog post delves into the esoteric wisdom and occult pursuits of Darryl Mundrick, an individual who has dedicated significant time to studying very diverse magickal traditions and unraveling the mysteries that lie at the heart of these ancient practices. From cosmic consciousness to sacred languages and the path of the mage, Darryls perspectives offer an exciting glimpse into his journey and approach to the Occult. I cannot thank him enough for this contribution, please let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Interview
PAA: What first sparked your interest in the occult and magickal practices at such a young age? Was there a specific experience or influence that started you on this path?
My mother was studying Anthropology towards an Archaeology degree when I was a child, while she wasn’t able to complete that degree, her passion for Egyptian, and Meso American civilization and mythology has continued throughout her life. From out of this I was taken to museums, and was read to from world mythologies and the Castaneda books that were part of her course studies. The concepts from the Castaneda books fascinated me and became the early foundation for my interest in occultism. She taught me about astral projection, auras, and tarot as she had learned about it during the 1960’s as a Flower child.
PAA: You mentioned your ceremonial magician teacher introducing you to many concepts and practices. What was the most impactful or meaningful thing you learned from him? How did his teaching approach or style resonate with you?
My first ceremonial magick teacher gave me Craig’s “Eleven lessons in High Magick” and Wilson’s “Illuminatus!” Trilogy and told me to read them together. The result of this was a loosening of my rigid teenage thinking about what reality is, and the nature of Order and of Chaos, but also generated some cognitive dissonance that took a while to work through. My 16-year old’s brain still thought in dichotomies only, and while Wilson’s book did shake up my egocentric certainty about what I believed, I missed most of the point of that book until I reread it a few times, years later. An aspect of the co-creation that an individuated awareness effects upon objective Reality is the ascribing of order to chaos. With Chaos as infinite potential, each decision made selects a linear timeline of experiences limiting that infinitude of probability to a chain of causality. We ascribe significance to things, the subjective meaning increasing the coherence of that thing’s inherent order. As Terry Pratchett said through his character Death in The Hog Father:
There is no justice, there’s just us.
Terry Pratchett (Death – The Hog Father)
We are defining, giving limits to various Universal principles by ascribing them to circumstances and determining where their boundaries are. A concept being manifested, or brought into focus, by limiting it’s multidimensional expression of infinite possibilities transformed to just it’s expression into one probability timeline.
Belief Systems & Traditions
PAA: How did you reconcile or make sense of the diverse pantheons and traditions you encountered in your visionary experience with LSD? Did it change your perspective on religion and spirituality?
There are “consciousness streams” for each of the forces of nature, as Ifa explains it. These streams take on individuated personality expressions as anthropomorphically conceptualized by the people of each region of Earth, forming that culture’s Nature based pantheon. It’s a personalized relationship between those humans and the consciousness’ of the facets of Nature. We ascribe human characteristics for our limited human consciousness to be able to more easily identify with them, and thereby align in harmonic resonance with those forces of Nature. This is important in order to align with ones greater potentiality, which allows one to fulfill the purpose (Ifa calls this destiny) that one has chosen to experience in the physical dimension. Alignment of ones internal psyche aspects with those similar external objective forces of nature generates a resonance, and enables actions beyond the limits of self. Like a solo instrument performance compared to the harmony that comes from the cooperation of an entire orchestra.
Then there is a gulph, called the Abyss in Golden Dawn style Kabbalah, without a supreme god from a particular pantheon ruling over all pantheons like a president ruling over state governors. Earth pantheon deities embody the forces of nature for their cultural people. Cosmic level beings are related to in a culturally based anthropomorphism, but aren’t tied to the form from a particular culture. The same being (or they can each be seen as a Universal principle) looks the way that is most easily related to by that group of people. Each being can appear in different forms as anthropomorphisms of different qualities of that being. In that same Kabbalah system, this would be Binah, Chochmah, and Kether: the three upernals; in Hinduism “God with forms”.
Beyond that would be the 3 Veils of Negative Existence that in Hinduism is called ” God without forms,” the unfiltered Cosmic principles beyond human conceptualization: Gravity, Time, etc . When this organizational principle manifests subjectively as human brain of the microcosm, the Abyss is the corpus callosum separating the Right hemisphere from that of the Left, and from conscious mind of Malkuth in the frontal lobe to the collective unconscious of the Supernal sephiroth in the cerebellum and medulla. The paths between the spheres of influence, or brain regions, are neural pathways. Organizing the internal patterning of our energies with the external same pattern allow us to enfold greater levels of information complexity into our perception. This is the same principle by which we can boost the favorable energies of a magick working by aligning that working with a natural cycle such as days of the week, or the phases of the moon, seasons et cetera.
In Greek mythology Kosmos – the physical Universe, & Kaos all possible potential probabilities. Forgive the alliteration, I just like the word play. Yoruba verses for the odu; the energy patterns, utilize alliteration word play a lot in expressing these energies as words.
PAA: What drew you to study Master Mantak Chia’s Taoist nei gung system? How compatible did you find it with Franz Bardon’s initiatic teachings? What specifically appealed to you in each system?
I had been studying Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) for a couple years, having fallen in love with much of the deeply multilayered concepts after experiencing the energy of a Vishnu puja being performed at a small temple. As the 108 names of Vishnu were chanted, a rolling tide of cool clarity and feeling of being unrestrained in space washed over me, and my soul just resonated. I read everything I could get on the subject, and began reframing my concepts of life based on this knowledge. However, as much as I tried, ADHD wouldn’t let me meditate in the ways these books described. Mantak Chia was recommended to me by a Zen Buddhist friend who suggested that the practices using visualization of energy synched with breathing might be more appropriate. Master Chia explained how Taoist internal alchemy was a development off of the Kundalini yoga teachings that Sannyasins brought into China. He relates that they adapted Kundalini ascent into circulation of the microcosmic orbit in order to remain able to function in everyday life instead of having to retire to asceticism.
I have found that both systems are easily engaged, the core books being written for Westerners as textbooks for progressive systematic development. Although the classic 5 element theory from Taoism differs slightly from the Graeco-Egyptian schemata, both focus on them as experiential qualities of energy being aspects of the foundational original substance called Ether/Aksha/Earth. This shown in Hermetics as the top point of a pentagram, or the center of a circle that each element is an expression of, and in Taoist 5 element theory it is part of the continual transitional cycle of the transformation of this One Substance through phases of building up, or tearing down. The developmental exercises help to discern the sensation of these energetic qualities, the gathering of them in a building up stage, and the release of them in a tearing down phase.
This is a core part of foundational magickal development. One must be able to experience the reality of these energies with the senses before being able to effectively utilize them to create change. Both systems utilize visualization and meditation for this, as well as the transformation of the negative qualities of these energy states as they are expressed through the mages psyche and personality. Both systems necessitate this as part of the most basic foundational work for success in anything beyond it. Both systems also work quite well together, the exercises either being different iterations or in alignment in such a way as to further the development of what that technique is intended to accomplish.
PAA: You practiced Enochian magick at a young age – what appealed to you about this system and what did you gain from working with it? Have you continued applying Enochian methods in your practice?
I was fascinated by the idea of contact with non-human consciousnesses, I also loved the inherent order to the system and the progressive format that skrying the Aethers presented. With Enochian historically being an incomplete system on it’s own, all of my research and work with it is theoretical. Enochian seems comprised of 3 independent, yet cooperative systems.
From my research, the 30 Aethers relate to the Earth in 93 divisions, heavily influenced with Gnostic cosmology, and can be seen as a Zodiac belt, such as the one Bardon proposes as surrounding the Earth, the Aethers, however divide the degrees based on 30 regions instead of 12, whose influence when activated seem to initiate experiences in daily life correlating to the Aether scryed. Watchtower system seems useful for actualizing opportunities through spell work, and the Planetary system, which I have not yet worked with, but I conjecture links the Aether and Watchtower systems together, and would be useful in the same way that other Planetary magick systems are utilized. My hypothesis is that all three together would be a powerful astrological magick system in which the True names of these forces are utilized to harness and direct the energies of the planets, opening the aether region of space (30 zodiac houses) that the planet being worked with resides in at the moment of the working, in order to boost the magickal intention of a spell formed through the appropriate corresponding watchtower drawn as sigils from the squares.
I adore that not only does Enochian have the entire system built upon the language, but that the language is 5th dimensional with each word an acronym for the complete concept of that word, and by further extension the energy-consciousness complex of the mage as microcosm. This supposition if viewed from the framework of Dr. Michio Kaku’s seminal 1994 book: Hyperspace, in which he describes the Fourth dimension as viewing all angles of a space simultaneously, and time as all events being concurrent, and if the 5th dimension is conceptualized as conscious perception and thereby an “inner state,” like a Kline bottle, turning in on itself, then the Enochian system is very much an ordering of external forces with internal forces, allowing for a determination and quantitative selection of the qualitative forces. I continue to use it in this capacity, and as an excellent framework for the specific patterning of forces in a similar way that matrix algebra is useful for analyzing and interpreting data. As the Enochian Entities disseminate information through the interpretive lens or paradigm framework that a mage is familiar with, so planetary squares, which John Dee was undoubtedly familiar with from Agrippa, were inspiration for the structure of the watchtowers. I find the Golden Dawn’s Enochian system most useful for my research, and I continue to utilize the Enochian words from the Watchtowers when working with elemental and planetary energies and geometric fields. I also find the pentagram, hexagram and Watchtower rituals very useful.
The energetic field geometries that can be structured from Enochian I continue to use regularly in my practice when building and directing elemental energies.
PAA: What role has entheogenic sacrament and inner visionary experience played in your development as a mage? How has it impacted your magickal worldview? Have these experiences opened up avenues in your craft that other methods could not?
In Ifa there is no use of entheogens, for the purposes that the tradition works with, they have no need or use for them. Part of what fascinates me in mystical practice is seeing what the boundaries of consciousness are, and working on moving beyond the cycle of reincarnation. I find I can get more intense and deeper experiences with entheogens supporting the expansion of my awareness beyond ego limits that have defined me at any given moment. Utilized as a sacred medicine, the boost of energy they provide to awareness has enabled me to access right brain consciousness more easily, rewrite socialized thinking, and develop the experience of the flow of energy. LSD can facilitate writing new neural pathways especially in conjunction with magickal rituals or exercises as with Timothy Leary’s 6th neural circuit which Robert Anton Wilson described as Metaprogramming.
Psilocybin and Cannabis can facilitate the experiencing of reality as perceived from the Right brain, a state of ecstatic bliss, everything as fields of energy, the interconnectedness of living beings through relationship and through the electromagnetic fields each generate, a general state of benevolence in the Universe, these foundational experiences that Mystics report about can be facilitated by entheogens, in the proper set and setting as Leary used to say. There is an amazing Ted talk by a neurologist that talks about this: Dr Jill Bolt Taylor’s My Stroke of Insight. I strongly recommend this 20 something minute video for any mage.
PAA: What common threads or universal truths have you uncovered across all the diverse traditions you have studied? What binds them together in your view? Do you see any inherent limitations or flaws in trying to synthesize such varied streams?
There are higher and lower dimensional states, as well as an infinitude of potential parallel realities that are phase shifted by their probability. All dimensions whether physical or immaterial, as well as all beings, objects and circumstances are one sentient Being. Each person’s totality isn’t existent in this reality, but in a state of superposition: the Higher Self, which I like to conceive of in the analogy of a star whose rays of light hit the curves and angles of linear space time like a crystal, and refract among an infinitude of facets, each facet being a parallel reality whose proximity or distance (likelihood) is based on probability. The more similarities of correlation they share, the more probable that reality is, and so the closer to being actualized as one’s own personal reality.
We can define the significance of any energy interaction. There are as many paths of spiritual development as required for each person. A great analogy from Sanatana Dharma is “One mountain, many paths to the summit.”
Lower dimensions of existence including the third and fourth are dependent upon a dichotomy of opposites and similarities through degrees of relationship and expressions of expansion or contraction. Each probability is a timeline forming that parallel reality. Timelines are chains of causality, a sequential set of moments formed from the confluent intersection of choices and circumstances.
The Spiritual realm, which is the blueprint of material reality, is composed of many diverse hierarchies of beings (pantheons & families) not only of one particular paradigm concept. Matter: both organic and inorganic are composed of resonant energy fields recursively cycling within a delineated area, whose rhythm forms the vibrational pattern. In 3rd dimensional perception we see this as molecules. This pattern is sustained by an influx of the Universal life force (in Ifa we call this Ase’), a higher dimensional aspect of Akasha that, as resistance acts upon the pattern, it loses coherence and the Universal life force decreases its flow into the pattern. These resistances when in the energy fields composing a living being are traumas (Jungian Shadow archetype), and for either living or inorganic, also the other misfortunes that interrupted the flow of energy being experienced by the matter. As we are light beings, where we are dimmed is due to these shadow states.
From Enochian work I was given the formula: KHAO (as in the Discordian incantation “the sacred Chao says ‘Mu’”). KIKLE HOATH APILA OLPRT: “The Mysteries true devotee lives forever as a vessel for the light.” The intersections of the field form overlaps, the totality of which forms the matters’ pattern. To alter the pattern adversely or beneficially requires changing the vibrational rhythm.
At the periphery of the field of wave conglomeration, the wave collapses into particles where it interfaces and interacts with the fields of objective reality forming circumstances relevant to the matter. Living matter differs from inorganic in that the life force doesn’t just flow into the pattern to sustain it, but flows through it creating a direct link between the multidimensional totality of the living being. Inversely, Inorganic matter is more a reflection of it’s higher dimensional state which is like archetypal blueprint of the object.
Investing life force into an object of matter is making a magickal object, a talisman or amulet. For a living being, the awareness isn’t just sentient, but cognitive. The greater the complexity of cognitive functioning, the greater the beings’ volition. All mind: all consciousness,’ are aspects of One mind, as It engages in Self discovery through awareness described in Sanatana Dharma as: God meditating on ItSelf. This is why the idea of ‘original sin, ‘ and ‘eternal damnation’ are ridiculous. We are all One Being at some higher dimensional level, and this Being wouldn’t want to cause Itself injury.
Forces are rhythmic wave patterns without enough intersections with other waves to cause recursion as a result of interference patterns. Syncretizing, unlike eclecticism is research and insight based. Commonalities and disparities are examined and where the overlap occurs can be seen to be a more extensive truth. If something is true in multiple contexts and situations, it alludes to it being more than the sum of its parts. There’s a reason each culture does things the way they do, and usually that is because it’s worked repeatedly and is reliable. Respecting that and citing credit is important to prevent appropriation, and to retain accuracy of information in proper context. However, traditional wisdom must be applicable to modern needs, and so has to be evaluated and applied in modern context for relevance. That’s how we develop any technology whether spiritual or material. This allows us to not have to keep reinventing the same technology, but to instead make advancements. Just like any other science, the occult sciences of the R. brain require growth and development with this periodic examination of techniques and knowledge for relevance to the current form of circumstances, and whenever needed, to build upon the traditional knowledge and wisdom to continue advancing goals. Modern explanations of traditional wisdoms in a way that is contextually relevant to the times.
I’d like to discuss some of these concepts as they apply to different aspects of reality. Time: one begins unawakened, perceiving a single timeline with linear progression of causality. Time sense can be developed through paying attention to the sensations during periods of dawn, noon, dusk and midnight. With practice this will develop into more specific temporal awareness.
Eventually an ability to perceive various points along that timeline develops in awareness. I’ve seen this conceptualized as a book which one is able to flip through at will, and a movie on DVD where one is able to skip forward and back to specific scenes. Tarot or oracular divination tools can be used as foci for this, even checking the time on a cell phone or wristwatch to verify if the time it feels like is accurate. Time in the higher dimensional states however, is perceived with an even greater complexity. Full fourth dimensional time perception is able to perceive all moments on a timeline concurrently. I like Alan Moore’s conceptualization of a comic book page with multiple panels, and that of Dr. Michio Kaku who presented this like looking through a transparent prism, seeing through all the facets at once. Beyond this in a higher dimension is the ability to look at a point in a timeline and perceive the probable divergences from the standard.
Then even higher dimensionally one can perceive full timelines of a probability set. Then perception of points on multiple timelines to select the most favorable set of moments for the intended goal to manifest in it’s highest potential. Then improbable timelines can be perceived.
Spatial perception is similar, being able to get a feel for what each direction feels like, such as with calling the directions in circle casting. This is a start to orientation within space forming an “x” and a “y” vector. The “z” axis would be expansion of that awareness field or bubble outward to include greater volumes of space, including stellar positioning and eventually beyond by magnitudes of power. An expression of this can be experienced first with orientating ones awareness to the horizon expanding the perceptual field to encompass greater spatial volume, later on this can be built upon with the cross formation from the LBRP.
PAA: You mentioned letting go of “neurotypical experiences” to focus on esoteric pursuits -what did you give up and how has that choice impacted your life path? Do you have any regrets? Would you recommend a similar level of commitment to someone following your footsteps?
What I mean by neurotypical experiences is mostly in socialization. I wanted to spend time learning magick. It’s the one thing that brought me the most happiness and a sense of accomplishment. I considered the normal life experiences and found they didn’t resonate with me, and I don’t want to have just another status quo experience like anyone else. I didn’t play sports, would only hang out with friends if i had time after my daily practices. If a friendship or romantic relationship interfered with my magickal studies and development, I ended them. I considered what went into being a good parent and decided to not have children to avoid the loss of time and energy required to properly nurture and raise them. I worked jobs that allowed me time to study, or didn’t impinge on my energy as much, so I didn’t even start college until i was in my early 30’s. Status quo life with the markers of material success that seems to be so appealing to many, only seemed like a trap to me. I cannot regret the possibilities not embraced in the past, not only did I make the best choices I was able to at the time, but they also led me to being who I am at this moment. Besides, there are plenty of alternate Universe selves that chose the things I did not, I do not need to grieve for what other aspects of me have. The sacrifices I made were worthwhile to me, and supported my True Will, now some of those things are more desirable to me, but from this point on, not in mourning the past choices I made. Being multidimensional, we must be balanced in each area of our lives, with our physical, psychological, and spiritual selves, along with our material circumstances. Life in this world isn’t a punishment or prison, it’s closer to being an MMORPG. There’s a main story for each of us that we can choose to participate in, or run side quests, and there are other players as well.
Depending on their development of self-awareness, people are active players, or NPC’s until they awaken. There is no need for someone to follow the choices I made in my circumstances, as they have their own stories. Everything is a balance though, something is given up in order to develop growth in an area of existence. Discipline itself is a form of sacrifice. Having a regular dedicated spiritual practice will support a person more than extremes such as I chose. Material experiences are part of one’s development, just as spiritual experiences are. Everyone has to find their own balance of these life aspects. As for my footsteps, if I am fortunate enough to develop such a degree that I can become a teacher, I would see it as a failure of my teaching for a student to have to learn the same way I did. I feel that in education, the knowledge should be more accessible, and easier to learn. As with information theory and Moore’s law, I feel it’s the duty of every teacher to find ways to more efficiently convey greater amounts of information in ways more easily understood.
PAA: How has your worldview and personal magickal praxis evolved over your 20+ years of dedicated esoteric study? What core beliefs have persisted? Which approaches have you discarded over time as unfruitful or invalid?
My first major steps away from the Catholic conditioning of my childhood came through a Gnostic worldview based a great deal off my own subjective experiences, that were defined by Enochian concepts of the Golden Dawn and Thelema. Escaping an unjust and corrupt world were my primary motivations in my magickal paradigm. The more I learned of Eastern traditions, and then from Ifa, the more I began to understand the world as Lila, a game in which experiences are collected and meaning comes through the significance we ascribe to things in order to develop ourselves in whatever way we choose. Every living being is a Spirit visiting this place, some remember this, that is what the path of Return is about. Spiritual development is about remembering and reclaiming our True Nature as Spiritual beings, then integrating that into our human life.
I feel like it’s less about discarding practices or beliefs so much as it is about expanding beyond the limitations of each belief or practice, and then re-evaluating each of them in context of a bigger picture held at the moment. Paradox being a higher order of information, not an unsolvable dichotomy. One coin has two sides. Every experience and belief remains a part of us, but doesn’t have to define, or continue to limit us. Much like a matrioshka, a nesting doll, information from experiences is a nested hierarchy.
Cycles within cycles; systems within systems; wheels within wheels; the mystical vision of the gears or machinery of the universe. Although, in the end, all the techniques and religions are culturally aspected attempts of human consciousness limited by a three-dimensional perspective to grasp our True multidimensional spiritual selves and the nature of infinity. An attempt to divide by zero. Even dogmatic religions have a functional place, being as much spirituality as can be included in the paradigm of those who are exploring a focus on survival and physiological needs as illustrated in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid.
PAA: If you could snap your fingers and manifest one goal or accomplishment in your magickal career, what would it be? Why does this stand out as an aspirational focal point?
Nirvikalpa Samadhi: Cosmic consciousness in total awareness. A full and complete enlightenment, as this is the core and ultimate goal of sentient life in existence. From this state I would be able to do the most good. Although inevitable for each aspect, as we are all one multidimensional organism, no part is truly free of suffering until every part is free.
PAA: Looking back, would you change anything about the arc of your journey into magickal practice over the last 20+ years? Why or why not? Were there phases where you pursued fruitless tangents for too long? When did your path come into harmony and clarity?
This incarnation has been challenging, but has overall ultimately facilitated the development of my consciousness to what it is currently. Even the tragedies and difficulties have allowed me to experience depths of emotion, insight and empathy. For what I want to create, these experiences were all necessary to contribute skills, I have seen my compassion grow and become a way by which i define myself. Besides, every other iteration of “me” has made every other choice that I didn’t. When I reunite with my higher self in the spiritual realm, I will gain the experiences of those choices as well.
As I continued my spiritual-magickal studies after my initiation it felt like the fragmented vision of reality began to align into greater clarity after a few years. I was able to review knowledge from a different, broader, and less personal perspective, finding it easier to conceptualize the metaphysical concepts, and easier to see the connections.
Synthesis & Applications
PAA: You said you are currently working to synthesize all the knowledge you have gained – what does that synthesis look like and what is your ultimate goal? What form will the end result take – a book, new ritual system, teaching method etc?
There’s plenty of ritual systems, I don’t see what the benefit would be of me adding one more. After reading Dr. Jerry Alan Johnson’s Medical Qi Gong textbooks, and Taoist training books, I was very inspired by how through the use of sensing energy flow, visualization, incantation (mantra), sigil, hand seals (mudra), and sigils, real time magickal effects can be manifested.
My aspiration is to use this concept as a framework, synthesizing the knowledge I’ve gained from both Eastern and Western into a similar form. I love magick like nothing else in life, and to see this become a reality is my Dream to create. I believe this would be of benefit to humanity in its continuing evolution towards being incarnated in light bodies and inevitable development of higher type civilization on the Kardashev scale.
Taoist alchemy is an acceleration of the natural evolutionary destiny of humanity. I can confidently make this conclusion with so many of the Earth centered religions and spiritualities concluding in this same eventuality. Ifa says humanities destiny is to become Orishas, Sanatana Dharma says Deva & Devis, Taoism has humans becoming immortals, and even Western Magickal systems saying a permanent astral vehicle for consciousness to reside within, some referring to it as becoming “angels.”
PAA: What teachers or lineages have had the most significant impact on the development of your personal magickal system? Why? Were there identifiable turning points where you felt their influence strongly reshape your understanding or abilities at a deeper level?
My Godfather in the Isese Ifa tradition of Orisha worship gave me a reliable foundation as reference point by which I can examine and evaluate other traditions’ knowledges. Different scholars of the tradition credit the tradition with an unbroken system of knowledge with a conservative estimate between 5-8 thousand years. I feel as though this has given me some insight into Earth based traditions that we only have historical fragments of due to the Abrahamic religion’s destruction of so many traditional cultures. As example I hypothesize that an individuals’ patron deity is like the Orisha that “owns our head,” is the one that is closest to our inner self, is the main guide and example for to embody during ones life leading to the highest potential of the experiences in that lifetime. Living one’s best life you might say. So too, along that same line, once our destiny has been read, and that Orisha identified, we are said to be a child of that deity. What if Greek demigods were not the literal bloodline of an Olympian, but the child of that deity through patronage. Herakles is credited as being the child of Zeus, yet his name denotes Hera as of greatest importance. We have an Orisha that is the primary, we say owns our heads, and sometimes referred to as our spiritual father, and a spiritual mother supports our path in life as well.
Hera could have been his primary and Zeus his secondary patron. This is all conjecture of course, but with Ifa as a frame of reference with which to examine other religions and traditions, I can see hints of parallels. I think each of these ancient Earth traditions probably had an oracular divination system like we have Merindillogun, the 16 cowri system with patterns of specific significance and verses for each based on past experiences of those who experienced that energy manifesting.
The most significant pivotal experience for me in my spiritual development and restructuring of my consciousness for better reception of higher dimensional realities came through Orisha initiation. There was a book my Godfather gave me before I was initiated written by an artist herself initiated decades ago. I found many of the concepts she described very complex and I felt like I was only understanding in the most general way. He had me reread it after, and it was so clear that the contrast with before stood out dramatically to me. Just like we have to develop the cognitive framework beginning with basic arithmetic before we can understand quadratic equations and calculus, so too with the nature of spiritual realities. Not because of any fault in a person, but because they are so drastically different than the status quo consensual paradigm we are all currently in.
PAA: What advice would you give to someone just starting out on an exploration of magickal and esoteric traditions today? What pitfalls should they avoid? What foundational skills or knowledge areas should they prioritize first?
Develop meditative ability, resolve childhood traumas with Jungian Shadow work, CBT, inner child work or others, otherwise they will continue to block and stagnate one’s energy flow, skewing one’s perspective towards bias’ instead of having the clarity and insight of symbolized by the air dagger and empty mind of the water chalice. Masters Mantak Chia,
Franz Bardon’s IIH, and Ifa all stress the importance of this including the transformation of the emotional elemental energies of ones microcosm into a positive vibration. Then the start of accumulating the elemental energies so that greater amounts are able to be generated than one began with. These are the foundational substances which one will transform.
I would advise avoiding getting locked into religious dogmas. These are often designed to be very general, and apply to as many of the masses as possible, while ignoring specific circumstances of the individual. These too often demand turning control of one’s life and spiritual reality over to the authority of others without question. Responsibility over one’s actions and their consequences are an important part of free will. One is only free when one is free to choose. Religions are guidelines along an established path. No path is universally applicable to everyone, and each path is going to have differences for the individual that are unique to their incarnation and how they relate to divinity. Ultimately one’s Higher Self is the teacher, with any religious or spiritual tradition being a guide to the realization and embodiment of that communion and way to determine the veracity of what is communicated to differentiate gnosis from the confusion that traumatic unintegrated experiences can produce distorting the flow of information.
Criticizing, complaining and condemning waste our precious energy. If something is displeasing, change it (mages). If changing it isn’t desirable, or for whatever reason a viable option, then best to remove yourself from the situation. Cultivate patience, kindness and compassion and you will experience yourself as a pivot that the world turns around.
Open Questions
PAA: What unanswered questions or unresolved mysteries still drive your continued esoteric studies today? What topic, phenomenon or occult principle do you hope to unravel or illuminate in future phases of your journey?
I intend to see a greater shift of the consensual paradigm to one of equity, harmony between man and nature accompanied by the sense that humanity acts functionally as an organism, and is interdependent with other species. Furthermore having humanity being driven toward acquisition of knowledge and self development, rather than wealth and resource hoarding.
With the conceptual model of all that exists being Brahman, what is beyond this being? Is there a point in our spiritual development where we grow beyond Them? What would that be like? What exists outside of our multiverse? Are we able to in some higher dimension live the life of each person experiencing it as our own? If so, would living through each person’s life experiences cause some cumulative transcendence to a new state? Perhaps we can relive our lives moving back along the timeline experienced to a juncture wherein probabilities branched and choose a different fork in the road to live out a different iteration, and perhaps this is one form of reincarnation that we can choose for the purpose of refining efforts till we achieve the correct set of choices that let’s one live the highest potential in every moment of their life?
PAA: Do you envision ever reaching a point where all questions are answered, mysteries resolved, self-actualization achieved? Or will development continue indefinitely? What level of mastery over destiny is possible in your eyes?
What a horrific and banal thing the Universe would be if all questions could be answered at some point. What would be the point of continuing to exist? In regards to destiny, Ifa teaches that everything that incarnates comes here having chosen a destiny and received contextual circumstances to manifest during the lifetime that support fulfilling that destiny. Free will allows us to deviate from that path on most things during the lifetime and in this way differs from the Greek concept of fate being written like a story one acts out. However, my own pondering on this is from a model of all time being an infinite Now, with all experiences of all one’s incarnations being experienced simultaneously, having only limited perception in the three dimensional state experiencing it as an unfolding sequence of events for purposes of perhaps focusing on specific moments, this could be viewed as predetermination. From the overall interconnected webwork of the timelines and sequence of choices and experienced consequences forming the probability fields that our multidimensional selves must perceive, it is still free will having been made in any given choice, or so is my rough hypothesis so far.
Experiences of Interconnectedness
PAA: What experiences over your spiritual journey led you to so strongly feel the truth of interconnectedness in all things? Was there a particular moment where this clicked into place for you?
The vision I had during my knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel, revealed interconnectedness and multidimensionality to me. I knew nothing about Hindu cosmology, religion, or spirituality. I had read one or two Americanized books on Buddhism philosophy, but knew nothing of divine forms. I experienced expanding encompassing Earth and outward more & more until the Universe was like a pond before me. There was a male form sitting cross legged, like an analogue photo negative, outlined in crackling lightning that took up all the space that wasn’t the Universe-pond. There was a resonance all around me saying “you are mine” (I believe this to be like a kind of time-space continuum location lock). I thought, “what is beyond this?” I began expanding again, and eventually saw that there was an infinitum of these full lotus sitting entities, near identical, each with minor differences unique to themselves, each with a universe pond before Them. I realized I was out of my body, and I worried about how I would find my way back to my body. I chose one of these, somewhat at random, ended up inside the body of a 43-year-old legal assistant iteration of myself, in casual business attire, in New York, just after 5pm rushing to get home in time to cook dinner for my husband and 2 children. I remembered that I had just entered this body, and didn’t belong in it. I rose back up to the nexus, and calmed myself, then remember I had once read that if panicked while astral projecting, to focus on the feeling of my body. I snapped right back in. It was almost 8 years before I learned anything about Hinduism and the deities and recognized Bhairava MahaShiva as that deity form.
PAA: Have your direct experiences of profound unity shifted how you relate to other people, society, nature, or existence itself on an emotional level in your day-to-day life? What changes emerged?
I still find my conscious thoughts shifting back and forth from immersion in the cartesian paradigm living as a person in whichever particular circumstances, to consciously perceiving this as a consensual shared virtual” experience much like a deep dive MMORPG with an assumed role being lived out. From numerically higher dimensional layers, we are each multidimensional beings sharing this experience, and at even higher dimensional layers than that, we are all One Being exploring the awareness of It’s own consciousness. I get angry at people far less, but still as necessary when a healthy motivator for those specific circumstances. We share this world, through whatever paradigm we individually perceive it, and so isn’t it better to have a pleasant experience rather than one of suffering, and so by extrapolation, why not for everyone? Major spiritual law, don’t be an asshole. Not because of some invisible angry sky daddy who will spank you, but because cumulatively it makes it shittier for everyone, including you, and it doesn’t have to be that way. We could have a paradise here, now, if people stopped being selfish and cruel assholes.
Cosmological Model
PAA: I’m very interested in how you see consciousness, energy, polarity, cycles etc interacting -could you share more about how you envision those relationships and flows? What speaks to you about this model?
Consciousness directs Energy, energy directs circumstances. The Order by which our cosmos is organized is that of a nested hierarchy of information complexity, acting as a gridwork over the chaos of infinite probabilities. This gridwork, or “matrix” is seen in the 256 odu patterns; the combinations of the Yi Ching hexagrams; the 256 letters of the Watchtower tablets; and others. Interpretation of the forms of these patterns has layered or nested information complexity with the extent of contractive/expansive qualities to the pattern, the dynamic qualities of Akasha manifesting as 1/4 of elements, various iterations of how this could manifest as circumstances, how it relates to the other patterns etc…
5 spatial dimensions and below comprise physicality (the Kosmos in Greek), the Universe being a dynamic tension between polarities, expansion and contraction, ebb and flow, with the toroidal shape being indicative of the cyclic patterns of circumstances in existence. When a cycle is completed successfully it begins again transitioning as a spiral to the next higher level.
PAA: At what stage did this cosmological framework coalesce for you into its current form? Was it the result of integrating several preexisting systems or did it emerge organically from your own revelations and intuitive knowing?
I kind of conceptualize this like the Tarot deck. There have been major defining moments upon which everything pivoted, these are the 22 Atu or trump cards, and series of minor experiences supporting going from one pivotal moment to another, which suite and card thereof being determined by my choices making up those journeys. I reevaluated beliefs and assumptions after any given experience expanded my perspective coagulating into my current paradigm.
Sometimes, when on my own, and not under the guidance of a teacher, it took years to do this as I had no frame of reference for reality as I understood it at a given moment. In essence, as I integrate all my experiences it becomes more refined and clear.
Sacred Language
PAA: Your mention of sacred languages and tonal resonance power intrigues me. Have you observed or experienced compelling examples of linguistic vibration manifesting results? What makes this principle carry weight for you?
Sanskrit, Enochian, and Yoruban are all based upon this concept. Physics tells us that words vibrate air molecules, and beyond that, that elementary particles are connected as molecules with vibrational bonds. Some Kabbalistic traditions allocate each of the 22 letters to a region of the body. So too we see this in Bardon’s third book, and with Sanskrit in the Tantrik traditions. The more these correlates are built up, the more easily the resonance of language (the Power of the Word) can be experienced.
Language being able to produce resonance is the basis of Sanskrit mantra, Yoruba incantations and invocational prayers for the deities. As evidence of effectiveness, a Soprano hitting one octave above middle C causing resonance to break glass. Mantras are said to be audible forms of yantras, themselves geometric forms of a deities’ energy. Cymatic experiments have shown fine particulate matter forming geometric patterns when using the vibrations of specific frequency modulations.
PAA: Have you received teachings or transmissions related to language, sound or vibration that unlocked deeper understanding or abilities? Can you describe any of those pivotal moments surrounding nautical or linguistic mysticism?
I worshipped MahaVidya Kali weekly with Right hand Tantra pujas for 4 years, eventually it occured to me to use prana pratistha mantra to imprint mantras in one’s energy field like Reiki does with it’s symbols. Inspiration coming through reading Franz Bardon’s the Key of the True Kabbalah. At the time being without either the Vedic brahmanical training with varnamala (alphabet) nor the Tantric wisdoms of the same, it was only with much further research that I understood the insight she gave me to setting each letter in it’s chakra petal using the prana pratistha mantra and Taoist breath incantation technique to imprint them there. Developing these imprinted energies then with Bardon’s letter exercises. Some Tantrik systems organize divine expression for relationship with an individual as being three depths or tiers: the Causal which is the Deities energy patterns expressed in pronunciation of those vibrations as mantras; then the subtle as the geometries expressing that Deities energies, this is called yantra; and finally in the gross, or physical form, that is anthropomorphic and called murti. Moving from gross to causal is increasing in abstraction, and lessening of identification with the ego boundaries that express individuated personification.
Conceptual Limitation
PAA: How do you see human consciousness and conceptual limitation playing a role in focusing infinite potential into this experienced reality? Have you witnessed or read about this in action?
As multidimensional cosmic beings, we agree to extend parts of ourselves into a limited state of awareness in order to expand and develop though experiences within the malleable state of infinite potentials. We accept the limited state of being experienced here in order to focus on perceiving the specific results of our choices and those from the choices of others that intersect our sphere of awareness. This is the “co-creation” we participate in, like an open source MMORPG. The choices we make determine how the story develops, for one’s individual experience, and that of those who intersect one’s sphere of influence and it’s consequences.
PAA: Have your own perceptual filters or mental models shifted dramatically at certain key points, exponentially expanding what you considered possible? What breakthroughs stand out on looking back?
When I went through the knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel, I used the ritual from Thelema, and this was a significant pivot point. As opposed to the Goetic ritual evocations where entities were called to me (before I knew about astral projection to the spirits’ plane of existence to guide them to the triangle of art or crystal), this was the first major experience in which I extended my awareness out to connect to a macrocosmic entity to directly transform my consciousness. This began the breaking of my defined ego boundaries. Subsequent entheogenic experiences continued to make those boundaries more malleable, allowing my mind to expand more beyond my subjective conceptual frameworks, and most significantly was my traditional 3 day initiation into my Orisha. The Orisha initiation I found to be a much more refined and profound version of the KCHGA ceremony. Thousands of years of unbroken practice has allowed Ifa to operate as a science with spiritual reality. Where I see the benefit of additional spiritual practices is the goals of the Orisha traditions are designed to continue in the cycle of reincarnation continually refining one’s character as a major part of spiritual development and personal consciousness leading one to ultimately become an Orisha oneself. Sri Aura Bindu spoke of something similar in “Hindu” spirituality, with one, after many lifetimes of refinement becoming a Deva/Devi. Taoist cosmology talks about many levels of spiritual elevation beyond immortal deity status from attaining cosmic consciousness. With the conceptual model of being small parts of One Being ParaShakti/Brahman/MahaShiva etc..), then what happens after one attains this level? Universe is dynamic, ever changing, and doesn’t tolerate stagnation. Any state that becomes stagnant begins to breakdown in entropic change, so there must be continued development past this elevation to the state of Orisha/Deva/Immortal/etc …
Ritual Selection
PAA: When conducting rituals, what energetically happens behind the scenes, in your view, when improbable possibilities get selected to occur? I’m very curious about those dynamics.
The probability distribution of the state vector collapses from the focus of attention that the ritual provides, along with the directed energy required through that vector for the manifestation to occur. The improbable is made more probable through increasing significance by strengthening correlation with added correlates.
PAA: Have you worked ritual magic to seemingly implausible ends with positive results? Did unseen support or mystical laws at play enable transcendence of normal limits?
Yes
Higher Beings
PAA: Why do you feel higher beings and unity states amplify magical intentions? Have you had any firsthand tastes of that through your own work, or observed how it operates?
This touches on one of the fundamental concepts of the Orisha tradition. An exchange of energy in the form of devotional invocatory prayers, songs, and various offerings mostly of cooked food, with accompanying petitioning prayers. Celestials such as Orisha, Devas/Devis and others have a function in the Universe maintaining the harmony of existence. In performance of this duty they fulfill prayers and support success in the manifestation at the level of our life experiences. This works as a cyclic interpay between deities in the macroscopic general state, to us the microcosmic specific state and our individual circumstances needing adjustment to be brought back into harmony with the macrocosmic through manifesting a higher potential of that circumstance’s conclusion.
They do this to further the evolution of the One Being. No need for threats of fictional eternal suffering, or punishment by an angry and wrathful god. The boost of specific Celestial energies we can receive from these beings can propel us farther along our transformation than we can achieve on our own in one lifetime. Communities support and uplift one another. The Celestials are uplifting us as part of their community. I believe that their benefit comes through experiencing incarnation a little when they connect their energies with ours, perhaps granting them a little more free will then they otherwise have not being incarnated, as this is the only place beings can change through growth by new experiences.
PAA: What evidence or personal gnosis convinced you of invisible assisting forces from subtler dimensions at play in successful magic? By what markers are their presences discerned?
Synchronicities are one way these can be discerned. Occurrences that are significant to the Intent of the working. Scents and sounds that are correlated with the entity worked with; Inner knowing, this intuitive certainty of the beings presence; Feeling the shift in energy; Sometimes there will be a dialogue in one’s mind foreign to normal thinking patterns or novel knowledge. I have experienced all of these to varying intensities.
Divinatory methods to discern a presence can be used as well: pendulum, tarot any number of others that one is skilled enough with to utilize for such. As Orisha priests, we utilize consecrated cowri, either 2 for yes/no, or 4 for “commentary” on the yes/no determined from the pattern that falls. When I first started working on developing magically it was through a “Shamanistic” approach, and I would get manifestations from my ancestors that while seemingly coincidental to others were of significance to me. I grew up with stories of how my Great Aunt Cora could read playing cards for someone like a book about their life.
When I first decided to be dedicated to learning and developing through magick, I would find playing cards randomly on the ground. I borrowed a 1970’s book my Mother had called something along the lines of “Gypsy fortune telling” that I recalled had a section on this subject, and I would be surprised each time how the cards I had found would relate to something currently going on in my life. Smelling specific scents at improbable times also guided me.
Smelling Orange blossoms like my paternal Grandmother wore, or sweetgrass, which I associated with my Indigenous ancestors while thinking of something significant would inform me of my ancestors support in it, or unpleasant scents that triggered traumatic memories would tell of their disapproval with that course of action. I would have saved myself a lot of suffering during those times if I had been able to be a more open minded 15-year-old and heeded that advice. That however took a lot longer, as did listening to the advice of those living who had genuine wisdom to guide me.
The Way of Return
PAA: What spiritually sets the mage’s “Way of Return” apart from more common paths, in your perspective? What possibilities lie at its summit that inspire you?
I see no difference really. “One mountain, many paths,” and “spiritual” paths are just a small sample set of all the necessary experiences in the world. To refer to the Hindu concept of Dharma, a jeweler should be the best jeweler they can be if that is the destiny they chose for their incarnation, a warrior should be the best they can be as a warrior if that is their destiny. Any life’s experience can be a path back to Source if the person experiencing it does so in it’s highest potential. A person can reach enlightenment through any experience when it is the highest potential of that experience. Buddhists have so many amazing stories about this. My Buddhist friend gave me the book “Compass of Zen” in which are stories where the protagonist had a peak experience through sometimes the most mundane experience by perceiving it in just the right way. My favorite involves a Zen master who answered every question with “cats!”
PAA: Is attainment of this ultimate state permanent or conditional? Can a perfected magus revert to mundane consciousness if vigilance about maintenance lapses? What did ancient or modern exemplars demonstrate?
My godfather said that initiation to orisha priesthood would carry through to my further incarnations. So with something like Cosmic consciousness it would be even more so. Franz Bardon said something similar in IIA Initiation into Hermetics. Spiritual Awakening once occurring can never be undone. With additional incarnations, even if full Cosmic consciousness hasn’t been realized, the development will carry over, but there will still be forgetting upon birth. However, the process of spiritual development will also happen quicker until the person reaches the same state they were in when they passed from their previous incarnation. With Cosmic Consciousness as the return to the One Self of the One Being, while retaining one’s individual consciousness. The only stories I know of that recount a return to existential reality from cosmic consciousness is that of Lord Krishna, who is said to have been fully spiritually awake and self-aware of his innate divinity from the moment of his birth. Lord Krishna however, is an avatar of Vishnu, who is a major Principle embodying the aspect of the universe that maintains the Harmony of Existence. I too am excited and curious to find out what happens after the state of complete self-realization.
Microcosm/Macrocosm
PAA: How would you personally articulate the relationship between our inner world and the outer macrocosm when doing magic? What passes back and forth across that threshold, from what you can tell?
Internal states are projected outward, internal elements aligning with the same higher level external elements. The more of the same external elements correlated, the stronger the manifestation. I have found that Ceremonial magick works better after building up the elements within oneself microcosmically such as described in authors Bardon and Chia’s material. Energy directed by Intent passes across the threshold. What translates the inner to the outer is symbolic or imagined identification of an external object manifestation or condition with an internal aspect.
Like the offering of flowers embodying the olfactory sense being offered (identified with) the Divine, thereby focusing awareness into attention selecting that quality or aspect of the thing as significant. Looking at Tantric puja we see this same mechanism, with something offered to the deity as being symbolic of an internal quality. This is accompanied with a mudra and correlating bija (seed syllables) mantra. These seed syllables are the pronunciation of sanskrit letters with an aspiration as part of the “Aum,” the first sound that underlies and organizes all vibration.
PAA: In your experience, what occult laws or principles mediate the translation between microcosmic intention and macrocosmic manifestation? Is there room for unpredictability?
There are many sequences based on this: 16 odu Ifa, 10 Sephiroth, 8 trigram Bagua, 9 flying Stars, et cetera. Unexpected random elements are necessarily intrinsic to these sequences. As an example of such an algorithm, the 16 primary odu from Ifa: Odu interconnectedness (pattern of existence) in the Ifa order of seniority: Cycle of major 4
Eji ogbe Creation/birth
Oyeku meji/ eji oko Death
Iwori meji/ ejila sebora Transformation (spiritual transformation thru reunion w/ ipori- higher self in the Spiritual realm. Occurs through returning to the spiritual realm after death, initiation and/or trance possession).
Odi meji Rebirth (receiving a new human soul and destiny before re incarnating) (Initiation into an ancestral wisdom tradition completes this cycle within the human lifetime)
rosun meji Manifestation of specific ancestral inheritance that comes into being at conception
Owonrin meji The element of chance that affects the development of the potential of irosun
Obara meji Human consciousness as it pushes the boundaries in an effort to become self aware (development of identity and integration of experiences of the ancestral gift within life circumstances)
Okanran meji Understanding the self puts a person on the path of their destiny
Ogunda meji Perception of one’s destiny leads to a clearing of the obstacles so that it can manifest (Removing what prevents the full realization of one’s destiny)
Osa meji All human destiny is periodically challenged by unexpected occurances (Osogbo negative elementals)
Ika meji The will to overcome the challenges is in the power of the word.
Oturapon meji When human will is not in alignment w/ the principles of harmony & balance (embodied in ancestral wisdom traditions which provide solutions to challenges in ways that flow with Universal nature principles), a person is subject to stress & illness (workings of Osogbo: negative elementals).
Otura meji/ ofun kanran Inspiration to overcome adversity is from a renewed sense of connection w/ Spirit (inspiration from being in harmonious alignment w/Universe and the principles by which it works: experiencing the interconnectedness of existence)
Irete meji Renewed vision of one’s destiny can lead to determination (seeing one’s place in the interconnectedness of existence causes greater clarity of purpose & builds morale)
Ose meji Determination is supported by prayer (petitioning help from those beings more powerful and benevolent)
Ofun meji Blessing from Spirit. Then the cycle begins again @ a greater & more complex level.
Body of Light
PAA: The Body of Light concept fascinates me – could you share more about its place in spiritual development as you understand it? Where did you first see this idea?
The Body of Light is the completion of the next stage in human evolution. If humanity can survive it’s current state of barbarism then this will be an inevitability. Conscious awareness of directing energy through the physical body develops the energy body giving a framework for the next stage. The organs generate psycho-emotional energy correlating to the positive and negative qualities of the elements. These are radiated out forming amorphous fields suffusing and surrounding the physical (karma) body. This auric field is the individuals soul filling the etheric egg. These elemental energies are transformed from the negative elemental qualities into positive, purified through refinement, and condensed into a duplicate of one’s physical form through exercises such as those found in Master Chia and Bardon’s system, it forms the Lunar/Soul/Astral body the substance filling the energy body vessel. Until forged into such a vehicle for the eternal awareness consciousness, the soul forming the individuals personality disperses at death as one returns to their multidimensional self-source. This body is able to operate in the astral, the blueprint of physical existence.
When external elemental energies from environmental nature of our planet, from sun, moon and stars are united with those generated by the individual’s organs, the solar/spirit body is developed within the soul body, as the soul body was developed within the energetic double of the karma body, except like a foetus in the lower tan tien/manipura chakra. As this spirit body is developed, it grows into an idealized version of ones karma body, able to operate in the higher dimensions. Some Tibetan Buddhist tantra lineages call this the Rainbow body. They list 3 stages of this Rainbow body of light, and this is stage two. Master Chia talks about 3 enlightenments lesser, greater and greatest. Enochian taught me that the 12 zodiacal rays embodied by the four Great Secret Holy names are useful here. Each of the 4 name have 3 parts, which are the 3 zodiac signs of that element: the 3 modes of that elemental energy, or in yoga terms, the three gunas. Cardinal (satvic), mutable (rajasic) and fixed (tamasic).
The third stage is the Body of Light, in which all three of the bodies are united into a permanent immortal vehicle, an independent avatar, and the prime personality of one’s multidimensional source-Self. These all have developmental stages, and are not like flipping a toggle switch. It could also be conceptualized as the third dimensional state of probability selection through choice making being imprinted as an instinctual mind for a higher dimensional body formed of condensed energy fields external to one’s internal limited energy resource contained by ego boundaries. To operate effectively beyond one’s personal, limited ego boundaries and so expand ones sphere of influence on reality a vehicle composed of those same external energies forming a relatability that allows resonance with those fields. Then, consciousness directs energy through focus of attention (Intent on outcome of transformation).
PAA: What new capabilities or hidden metaphysical senses get switched on with development of the Body of Light? Can reality be interfaced with or manipulated in new ways previously impossible?
Reality is composed of a sea of energy fields organized into objective form through perceptual awareness. The body of light is of higher dimensional space and so works on higher dimensional physics. It is able to directly interface with the fields of energy composing existence. Under this model the Body of Light can be said to be utilizing principles of hyperdimensional physics. This could be described as dynamic versus static or hedge magic.
As the BoL develops, becoming active, the experience of the Universe as a flow of energy fields becomes more pronounced. This begins with an enhancement or extension of physical senses to perceive different types of energy fields. It develops proximal to distal exponentially, as our awareness is most familiar with our own body, mind, energy etc… self is most relatable starting and foundation point from which to expand, such as the first house in astrology dealing with the physical body.
Comparisons & Influences
PAA: Does your cosmology align with or diverge from Kabbalistic notions at certain points?
I’m curious about comparisons that come to mind for you. The Unity consciousness of Keter is interconnectedness. Chokmah is Hermetic polarity principle. The 1-10 conceptualization I previously sent you is based both on sacred geometry principle of Pythagoras, and the Tree of Life model. There is an interpretation of the Sepher Yetzirah saying that the “golem” is a metaphor for constructing the body of light, that includes combining the 22 Hebrew letters with each other to form a webwork, an energy lattice matrix surrounding the space (womb) in which the golem (vessel for the Mage’s consciousness) is formed.
PAA: Were there any traditional or modern systems you explored but ultimately found too dogmatic or limited for reconciling with your personal gnosis? What did they lack or restrict unfairly?
Each system is a representational model based upon the culture it originated from, it’s steps are based on concepts in order of importance to that culture, and has it’s own goals for the path it sets forth. Ultimately religious systems were too constricting with their adherence to the dogma of written rules. This is why Hinduism, Ifa, and Taoism appeal to me. While there are priests, rituals and devotees within these traditions, they are much more focused on the spirit of the rules, and often referred to as a Way of life instead of as religions by their practitioners. A Hindu who incorporates the philosophic principles of Sanatana Dharma into their life is practicing this, whether they attend the temple rituals, or chant one mantra for their Ishta devata, their personal deity or perform complex saddhana (spiritual ritual). Taoist alchemy is supported by religious Taoism, but is complete in itself, following the way of life that supports success with the practices. Boosts by the Celestials which Taoism works with can accelerate and magnify the processes, but are not required. Like saving up for a car by collecting soda pop cans to turn in, or saving money from working a career requiring a doctorate.
Beings of Cosmic Consciousness
PAA: What special qualities do “Beings of Cosmic Consciousness” possess that makes them unique or significant in your view? Have you ever sensed their presence?
Each embodies and acts as representative of a function composing the makeup of Universe, and can offer boosts of energy to us in their specific sphere of influence. At the Mandir during Maha Shiva ratri I have had glimpses of Celestials while meditating.
PAA: Can individual consciousness expand to their scale of omnipresent universality while retaining a distinct sense of identity? Is such infinite awakening a goal of your practice? What might that existence be like?
Taoist Nei gung has the culminating Reunion of Tao and Man, yoga systems have cosmic consciousness as a goal, Kundalini yoga in particular has Sahasrara at the crown point that connects directly with ultimate reality, Tantra has union with various deities, but not traditional Kabbalah, as “G_D” is separate from His creation. It is said that a man can achieve Chochmah, but not Keter. Even the Merkavah has the ultimate vision being that of the throne of God, still a self & other experience.
Eastern systems have many stories about people who have attained this state while alive. Buddhism: before enlightenment, chopping wood, carrying water. After enlightenment, chopping wood, carrying water. It is how the experience is perceived that ultimately changes. If enlightenment is Self-knowledge, and this is to whatever extent cosmic consciousness, then it is very much getting out of one’s head (identification with one’s ego boundary).
PAA: How do you see the idea of us co-creating relating to the everything being interconnected principle? I’d be interested in your thoughts there.
One of the main reasons we are incarnated into this world is to further the manifestation of creation through expressing free will by the process of making choices, that is, selecting what has significance, and then experiencing the consequences of those choices. Ifa says we come here from our home in the Spiritual realm to farm experiences, cultivate character, and continue the manifestation of the blessings that still remain in the spiritual realm upon the Earth. This happens through selecting the option in a circumstance that embodies ones Higher self as it is expressed as the highest potential of good fortune. This highest potential will always be that which expresses refined character.
PAA: As a partner in creation, how strongly can consciousness influence what unfolds on a global or cosmic scale? Are there examples from history of magi shifting timelines majorly through group ritual workings coordinated at power sites?
We see a practical example of this in statistical trend data, and projections of what is most probable being used to set future trends for “consumers.” This is a form of dynamic magick. To perceive the probabilities of various timelines and see strengths and weaknesses within patterns of that data, and to use that to change the current reality for an intended purpose: magick. How would one prove the shifting of timelines in a major scale? Would the ones involved recall the former timelines? Would anyone? Perhaps this is the Mandela effect, or a way of conceptualizing deva vu?
Would there be artifacts that translated over to one’s current timeline from the previous one experienced? I cannot answer definitively on this line of speculation. I believe that when this occurs, it is the individual themselves that do the shifting, and not everyone everything else. Like loading up a single player video game, thousands or millions may have this same game, but each experiences it based upon their choices and skills, or how we each can read a novel and yet still experience it in a personal way through the lens of our emotions, learnings, and memories of previous experiences.
Karma & Choices
PAA: What role does choice and karma play on the spiritual path as a mage, in your opinion? Have you noticed those patterns or dynamics in your own journey?
Pre-existing Karmas are revealed in the astrological natal chart, showing the obstacles and advantages that define one’s incarnation. The literal instruction book for one’s life. These need to be neutralized, so they do not exert influence on the individual. A mage is in the best position to do this because they are spiritually awakened and can recognize how these patterns (karma means “action” referring to behavioral patterns) are impacting their lives and what to do to overcome them.
Aligning the internal (microcosm) with the external (macrocosmic): as within, so without. As above (celestials and deities), so below (mankind). To cross the Abyss of Awareness, we need a boost of energy from the Celestials’ realm, in order to transform each astrological negative alignment into positive. These karmas offer repeated experiences positive or negative that present opportunities to develop oneself.
PAA: How much of your life course and experiences do you feel were predetermined or fated superseded choice? What ability exists to override astrological destiny through magical will or spiritual power?
Before I was initiated to Orisha, my birth destiny had to be read. This revealed the things I had chosen to do here during this incarnation, what was provided for me to be successful, the obstacles to be placed in my path to challenge my growth, the things my ancestors wanted accomplished, etc….in Thelema this would be called my “True Will.” But much of this destiny could be chosen to be ignored (with attending consequences) or modified after being born. Certain things are considered unalterable once one is born, such as time of birth, lifespan, biological parents and the karmas that define one’s birth symbolized by the astrological natal chart. Altering aspects of the destiny chosen can be accomplished after birth through this same type of divination, and through spiritual disciplines. Karmas as well are altered through various means, including, through Orisha initiation, which is a death and rebirth process, negating the karmas one comes into the incarnation with, but not the ones accrued during this lifetime, which are called seed karmas. On a lesser scale than initiation, different disciplines can be practiced in order to cancel negative karmic influences in the astrological chart. Acts of charity, specific mantra repetition, homa ceremonies, the wearing of gemstones as remedial therapy, and in Ifa, one could go for divination with an Orisha, or Ifa priest trained in the process, and it can be determined what measures will align one with the good fortune of their destiny, and what things to avoid that will hinder one’s goals and path.
Advice
PAA: If asked, how might you advise an aspiring mage to explore some of these core truths that you find so resonant? Where would you recommend they start?
Find what speaks to your soul, immerse yourself in it, develop belief through personal experiences, but listen to the Wisdom of those who have walked that path previously and further, and always that there is more than just that one perspective. Elder in a tradition, including Gurus and teachers are of benefit by being able to advise the best courses of action with that tradition. They can answer questions, point the way along the path, but one still has to walk it their self. Having a guide can get someone to the destination more quickly, more directly, and hopefully with less difficulties experienced.
PAA: What pitfalls or mistakes should those embarking on the magician’s path steer clear of today? Are there any trending occult theories or practices currently gaining traction that you feel are misleading or fruitless?
Cruelty, arrogance and egotism. Dehumanizing people, each of which is a spiritual being incarnated, and at a deeper level all beings are One, is ultimately self destructive. It also has a way of blocking one’s energy flow, keeping the positive energies radiated from the organs from developing into soul. Arrogance is a self delusional perspective that one is better than others because of their accomplishments. Egotism is taking credit for things others have done, usually from a place of insecurity. Each person is on their own spiritual journey, and so is where they need to be at the moment. Even with dogmatic religions, these are as much spirituality as someone who is in survival level consciousness (Maslow hierarchy of needs) is able to incorporate at the moment, which is why those religions are so unsatisfying for those who have progressed their consciousness past this point. One should cultivate their energy, and eliminate wasting it through karmic attachments, and through complaining, criticizing or condemning.
Key Influences
PAA: Which teachers or traditions really highlighted certain aspects of these concepts for you over the years? I’d be glad to hear about those influences.
Most credit has to go to my Godfather, a Babalawo in the isese tradition of Ifa whose lineage is from Ode Remo town, Ogun State, of Nigeria. He guided me, initiated me, and trained me in the Orisha tradition of Ifa, pointed the way for me in Sanatana Dharma, started me with a Buddhist form of Kuji Kiri, and began my studies in Qi Kung with the 8 pieces of Brocade.
PAA: How did your key spiritual mentors, ancient or modern, guide you toward overcoming the personal weaknesses or psychological complexes that obscured growth? What lessons proved pivotal in your moments of crisis?
Before my Godfather agreed to teach me the ways of Orisha, I had to complete a Shadow work program from John Bradshaw called “Homecoming” to begin recapitulating, healing, and integrating the traumas from 4 significant childhood states. This work parallels Erik Erikson’s childhood developmental stages, and these also nicely correlate with the lower 4 spinal chakras from Kundalini yoga, and more indirectly with the Knda Mpat (4 brothers) of Indonesian Ilmu Al-Hikma.
PAA: I would like to say how grateful we are for you to share so much in so much deatil. I am sure readers will find this interview to be a hugely inspirational, just hearing your journey. Many thanks.

Jason Byron has been exploring the intersection of mystical occultism and contemplative practices for most of his life. He considers himself a lifelong student of influential occultist Aleister Crowley’s work and esoteric systems like Thelema and the Golden Dawn. But beyond simply studying rituals and magic on an intellectual level, he has actively worked for over twenty years to integrate these mystical pursuits into his daily practices. His steady Raja Yoga training has provided mental clarity and an intuitive boost to complement the energy work of ceremonial magic. Skrying, astral projection, divination – he’s deeply immersed himself in the hidden realities these occult systems unveil. If you enjoy this interview then please visit his website and follow his work.
General
PAA: Please briefly introduce yourself.
My name is Jason Byron. I am a self-published author of two novels and am slowly chipping away at my third. My fiction tends toward dark fantasy, magical realism, and horror, but I am also quite fond of humor. I write poetry, as well, and have contributed song lyrics to the band Kayo Dot for many years. I have been a massage therapist for seventeen years, which has honed my intuition and convinced me of the truth in the holistic model of health and the mind/body/spirit connection. I practice Raja Yoga and ritual Magick—which I also write about on my blog. I am a lifelong student of Crowley and Thelema, and the Golden Dawn system. I am a Freemason and a member of the O.T.O., though I am not currently active in either fraternity. I am also a Probationer in the A.:A.:. I never went further because I did not like the heavy leaning toward Crowley’s own writing in the curriculum. I have been practicing Raja Yoga just as long as ritual Magick, and now that I am in my mid-40s, I am feeling and experiencing the cumulative effects of my practice. My political leaning is Satanism. I am a left-handed, introverted Capricorn. I live in Salem, Massachusetts.
PAA: What led you to start incorporating occult and magical themes and imagery into your writing?
“Write what you know.” Stephen King—one of my longtime heroes—would disagree with this statement. King says that it is boring to write what you know, and to explore with passion the unknown. But I have found that any amount of knowledge in any subject can be very useful in writing convincingly. I used to compartmentalize my writing and my personal spiritual endeavors as mutually exclusive, but decided to marry the two while writing my first novel, Blasphemy back in 2018. While worldbuilding, I was able to utilize my knowledge and experience with fraternal orders and initiation and come up with a fictional Order of global government that was both religious and political. It’s got a structure and framework, an exoteric and an esoteric side, and a mythos of its own. If I had chosen to come up with a secular system of government, I would have to spend more time researching and learning enough about world government to hopefully create a semi-convincing system.
Besides a religio-political system of rulership and initiation, I can write about astral projection, skrying, divination, evocation, alchemy, qabalah, and ceremonial Magick. I tried my hand at writing essays on Magick many years ago, but found it tedious and unsatisfying. They always ended up sounding overly-technical, and that made me sound like a pompous douche. I write about my own experiences with Magick and Yoga occasionally on my blog, The Manifold Curiosity on Substack, but I suffuse it with humor and autobiographical anecdotes to make the subject more approachable and more accessible. So instead of writing a textbook of Magick—there are enough of these already—I make it a part of my stories.
PAA: As both a poet and fiction writer, how does your creative approach differ between poetry and prose works? Which comes more naturally to you?
Poetry definitely comes more naturally. I’ve been practicing and honing my craft since I saw Ken Russell’s Gothic for the first time back in high school over twenty years ago, so it’s not like I could just naturally turn a phrase like Shelley. But poetry feels like less of a commitment than prose. It’s not as time-consuming. Unless you’re writing an epic, a poem—even a longer one—tends to describe a single feeling, or a single scene, or an observation, or one “thing.” Poems aren’t necessarily linear.
I like to listen to instrumental music and electronica when I write poetry. Instrumental music inspires me. Sometimes I listen to music and close my eyes and conjure up visions and scenes I use in stories later, but poetry is naturally musical. Listening to music not only inspires the feeling of a poem, but the meter. When I am working on a novel or story, my blog, or some sort of prose, I like to listen to white noise. Sounds distract me—the television makes me insane. So instead of waiting until I was alone, or late at night, or waiting for some other impossibly ideal time to write my first novel, I listened to white noise through my ear buds. It worked spectacularly, and now I insist upon it whenever I write. It insulates me. It keeps me focused.
A poem is like a photograph and a novel is like a film. I love English, and I love words. I take a lyrical approach to my prose along with my poetry, and that is probably why I will never be seen on the New York Times’ Bestseller List. I put effort into nearly every sentence I write. I want each one to not only convey a general meaning, but roll off the tongue when spoken aloud, have a cadence and a flow. Even ugly things can be said prettily. Look at Mervyn Peake. Gormenghast is one of the finest novels I have ever read because of this. The story is great, but the description and the word choice is otherworldly.
PAA: Your forthcoming novel is said to be in the genre of Lovecraftian horror – what specific themes, atmospheres, or Mythos elements from Lovecraft’s writing tradition speak to you most strongly as a writer? How do you strive to emulate them while still developing an original voice?
I have been a fan of H.P. Lovecraft my entire life. He has been an inspiration to my own style and aesthetic since I was sixteen. Lovecraft’s imagination was second-to-none, and the pride that he exhibited throughout his life and writing revolving around New England is a pride I personally share, being a lifelong resident of this haunted region of America. I have always emulated his approach in my own writing, and the overwhelming dread accompanying any prolonged meditation on “cosmic horror” can be enough to disassociate the mind from the body.
As with the writing of anyone I respect or from whom I draw inspiration, there is a balance between emulation and imitation. Imitation is the unfortunate result of both a lack of experience and a lack of confidence in one’s abilities. Early on in my own career, for example, when I began to read Shelley, Blake, and Keats, I wanted my poetry to sound as beautiful as theirs. But because I had no experience with poetry, and lacked a decent vocabulary, my first attempts were poorly-executed imitations. It wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I began to develop confidence in finding and using my own voice.
The Mindless Hour, which is the name of my forthcoming novel, is briefly described as “Lovecraftian horror.” It is actually a companion book to my last novel, Amalia. One of the main characters in Amalia is a writer enjoying his first taste of success in the publication of his first novel— The Mindless Hour. I only refer to it a couple of times, and I describe it as Lovecraftian horror, but it is a fantasy. A literary device. It is the equivalent of Tobin’s Spirit Guide from Ghostbusters. I just decided to bring it to life. It’s heavy on the Lovecraft vibe, but this is all conscious. It is not imitation because I am fully aware of my approach. It is supposed to be more fun than anything else.
Thelema
PAA: What originally drew you to Thelema’s teachings? How did you first start practicing magick from a Thelemic framework?
When I was 22, I moved out of my parents’ house in Connecticut. While packing up my things, I came across a copy of Aleister Crowley’s Confessions, which I had never read. I leafed through it, and the various technical magical references—especially regarding the qabalistic framework of the Golden Dawn, mystified me. I had been generally fascinated by the occult since childhood, but had never applied myself in any spiritual method or technique for very long. This was due both to a lack of discipline and a lack of direction. The weird references to “0 = 0” and “5 = 6” caused me to begin wondering if there was some sort of secret language that could impart magical knowledge.
After moving, I began a sober approach to this inclination. I bought my first copy of The Book of the Law, Regardie’s The Golden Dawn, and Crowley’s Book 4, and was hopelessly intimidated by all of it. Eventually, I was able to wade through Book 4. Because of its style and approach to Magick, I feel that it communicated directly to my unconscious. After incubating for a time, the magical process rose to consciousness and consumed me. I developed the rigid disciplines of Thelemic Magick, and observed the Observances. I studied The Book of the Law and The Holy Books like any dutiful Thelemite, and adhered to the A.:A.: curriculum.
It wasn’t until years later—maybe when the gods decided I had adored the Sun in His four stations sufficiently—that I began to differentiate between what is commonly referred to as “Thelemic Magick,” and the spiritual essence of Thelema.
PAA: Thelema places a strong emphasis on self-mastery and self-discipline. How do these principles guide your spiritual development and magical progress? What self-transformative practices do you find most effective?
Crowley describes Magick as “the Art and Science of causing change to occur in conformity with Will,” which is an all-inclusive definition. My own observation is that if we apply ourselves in a consciously willed direction—such as writing a novel—we will make progress in that direction. It’s all pretty basic commonsensical stuff. It just takes discipline and self-awareness. It’s interesting to think about, though. We are technically formulating our Will mentally, which means that it has no substance. It is elusive, astral. As we nurture this Will, it begins to take shape and solidify. It gains momentum. And as we continue to nurture our Will, it will eventually crystallize in the material world. We have successfully manifested something, coaxed it down from a thought to a word to a deed, made something out of nothing. Worked our Will. Worked Magick.
The discipline comes in mastering the self. The process of Raja Yoga is a perfect way of doing this by directly confronting our own unruly minds and drawing our egos into abeyance to serve us, not lead us blindly about chasing any and every foolish whim. The basics of ritual Magick are equally helpful. We drill ourselves early on with a daily practice, and while this gradually gets our citta, or mind-stuff, flowing evenly in one direction, it also builds a strong foundation for later on in our careers. The daily drills will not feel as important by a certain point because we have firmly established ourselves. The Pentagram Ritual, for example, will be something we can always fall back on, however, and draw power from.
PAA: Some critiques of Crowley’s writings argue they promote self-indulgence over self-restraint. How do you strike the right balance in your own embodiment of Thelema’s “Do what thou wilt” maxim?
The funny thing about Thelema is that it means Do what thou wilt. Also, the Law is for all. So if a person wants to use it is an excuse for self-indulgence, then that’s up them. That’s where they are on their journey up the Tree of Life. The Book of the Law says so itself: “all is ever as it was.” I have known people who embodied this interpretation, and frankly, it disgusts me. I call it “Low Thelema.” Other than asserting the ego, it is the attitude of the slothful and unregenerate.
My earliest studies in Thelema clearly indicated discipline from the outside in, from the Building of the Pantacle to the Cutting of the Wand. There is no such thing as “perfect,” but it is oftentimes considered a Good Thing to better oneself in the name of perfection. I accepted this interpretation. The very fact that any of us are on a spiritual path of any kind is an admittance of our imperfections and shows a desire to change and grow and evolve. You cannot accomplish any of this without discipline and self-restraint. I have known many people who have spent too much time sharpening their intellectual Swords while neglecting the diet and exercise necessary in the healthy development of their Pantacles. I am certainly not speaking from any sort of elevated position, either. I am describing my own ideal, and a direction in which I have always striven—often failing. Self-awareness is a key, and self-love.
Golden Dawn
PAA: What originally inspired you to join the Golden Dawn tradition? How did your worldview shift upon being introduced to its teachings?
When I first became enamored of Crowley, I learned who his teachers were, where he came from, what his magical foundation was built upon. And that was the Golden Dawn. I felt early on that to understand Crowley, one should learn the language his entire system is based upon. That was why I bought my first copy of Regardie’s masterpiece. Over time, I developed a deep connection with the original system, and undertook the Great Work using a Thelemic approach to self-initiation with the Golden Dawn aesthetic. In other words, I dispensed with the formalities of cumbersome ceremonial, impractical for the solitary practitioner, and simply acknowledged my Grade when it was recognized in accordance with the circumstances of my life. I made it so simple to evade the pitfall of spiritual pride, going quietly about my business, recognizing the symbols and signs.
I have been studying, practicing, and meditating upon the Golden Dawn for over twenty years at this point, and I can say, without a doubt, that all any aspiring Magician every needs are the Pentagram and Hexagram Rituals. All Magick is based upon them. Thus, they are keys to all Magick. Also, the perspective gained by examining the trajectory of one’s life based upon the structure and arduous climb back up the Tree of Life has been a life-affirming, fulfilling, and enlightening process.
PAA: Many struggle with Golden Dawn-style ritual magic. What practices or mindsets best prepare one for succeeding with its initiatory workings? What advice would you give newcomers?
The transformative process of Patanjali’s Raja Yoga has been my lifelong bolster to the disciplines of Magick. Part 1 of Book 4 gives a concise description of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, and this was where I first became aware of its benefits and parallels with Magick. It has since become a serious practice aside from any magical benefit, but the degree of concentration that develops will benefit the Magician substantially in retaining at will the intricate visualizations demanded by the Art. What you are doing in your physical surroundings is secondary to what you are doing with your mind and how thoughts are controlled and directed.
I never wanted to join the Golden Dawn. I am a solitary practitioner and self-initiator, and this is exactly where my Thelemic influence shines. But I did want to get a taste of what a Lodge-style initiation was like. So, like understanding Crowley by learning about the Golden Dawn, I sought to deepen my understanding of the Golden Dawn by being initiated into the Mysteries of Freemasonry. I found a sponsor, was interviewed, and was made an Entered Apprentice on 12 April, 2004, immediately after a little magical retirement in Vermont celebrating the one-hundredth anniversary of the Writing of The Book of the Law. I was Raised to the Third Degree as a Master Mason that June, and experienced a vision the following day resulting in ten years of meditation and the writing of a short book of religious condemnation called The Sword of Satan.
Regardless of any accompanying mystical or magical phenomena, the Rituals of Freemasonry have proven to make more of an imprint on my consciousness than I might have earlier thought. The symbols are extraordinarily deep, and they imprint themselves on your mind and in your heart. I joined the Officers’ Line in my Lodge and went as far as Junior Warden, but my life circumstances at the time made it impossible for me to continue. I certainly feel I had fulfilled the wish to get my feet wet in Lodge-style initiation, and would, in fact, love to become active in a Lodge again. But I remain a solitary practitioner.
Raja Yoga
PAA: Some argue Raja Yoga awakens dormant faculties like intuition or mystical visions. Have these or other psychic abilities emerged for you unexpectedly during concentrated practice?
If I have ever experienced a vision during my meditation, I would consider it a break in my concentration and would repel it like any other wayward thought. The mind will play 1,001 tricks and a trick on you to distract you from your practice. It is inevitable, and the ego is a cunning monkey to train. I once practiced dharana, or active yogic concentration, on a Tarot card, the Ace of Disks from Crowley’s Thoth deck. I experienced waves and undulations and patterns in the picture on the card, and an intense deepening of color. I can only describe it as psychedelic, and was very proud of myself for “achieving” this. It wasn’t until days later when I realized that it was nothing more than my ego playing a game—entertaining, yes, but worthless.
That said, I have found that regularly cultivated practice, patiently and over time, will still the mind, and gradually deepen the awareness; to the point that the intuition is greatly sharpened, and our latent psychic abilities will speak more clearly. Some people are born with more well-developed intuitions—the “gifted”—while others have no sense of it at all. I feel strongly that we all have it, and that it can be developed. It’s all awareness. If our awareness is deep enough, it is perfectly natural that we will perceive phenomena on a subtler level.
Alongside my Yoga practice, I have been a massage therapist for seventeen years. I would rather make my money as a writer, but in the meantime, I have made good use of my vocation. In that time, I have, in spite of myself, honed my intuition to the point that I can now easily read my clients with my hands, give them the depth of pressure they need, locate, focus upon, and release tension in areas the client may not have even known about. I’ve learned to use humor, tone, and body language in putting clients at their ease, and have confidence in my ability to do the same. This comes with time and practice. Yoga is the same. The expansion of consciousness and the strengthening of intuition occur perfectly naturally in accordance with the stilling and controlling of the mind.
I have never been particularly “good” at skrying. It’s something I have always been fascinated by, but beyond brief glimpses of scenes or landscapes and ripples of awareness, I was never really able to get anywhere with it. Within the last few years, after I had made definite progress with my meditation practice, my Ajna Chakra opened, to put it one way. I recognized my ability to receive visions. I began to skry the Thirty Enochian Aethyrs—which I have always wanted to do—and record my experiences. I’m stretching the process out because each subsequent Aethyr is harder to get into than the previous—at least for me. I am treating the process as self-initiation, so I need to be prepared and purified before feeling strong enough to traverse the distance between the edge of the universe and the furthest Aethyr outward. But I digress.
PAA: Some yoga scholars suggest Raja Yoga leads to nondual self-realization akin to Vedanta. Have you tasted or embodied any transpersonal or unitive experiences through your meditation yet?
Samadhi, the Eighth and final Branch of Patanjali’s system, either occurs spontaneously, or the exact qualifiers or triggers are still not known. Either way, it is the Union which is referred to as Yoga. Samadhi is the goal. I once heard it described as the disappearing of both the object of meditation and the meditator themselves, and only the meditation remaining. I have not experienced this, but right before Thanksgiving 2022, I did experience what I can only describe as a foreshadowing of samadhi. During my daily practice (I think I was up to 27 or 28 minutes at the time), I observed a break in concentration which lasted no longer than a second: I experienced thoughts being created by the egocentric mind. The brief altering in my mental vantage point, as simple and inconsequential as it sounds, was enough to completely annihilate any fear of dying or death that I ever had. It is impossible to describe mystical experiences, and when we try to communicate with words that which can only be experienced, we will either utterly fail or lead people astray. This is how I think of faith. It is also how I think of the Fourth Power of the Sphinx—to keep silent.
Let me just hop on my soapbox for a minute or two—I apologize in advance. One of the problems with any religious worldview is that they all depend on the blind belief of the religion’s adherents. The individual is told how to act, what to pray to, how to pray to it, what is important, what is good or evil, and on and on. This is the equivalent of Low Thelema. It’s laziness. It’s passivity. When we are considering life or consciousness on a cosmic or extra-cosmic scale, the words and impressions of others mean nothing. The universe is each of us, and each of us has the power to move inward and experience perspectives that are beyond the babbling of our ego. It’s not necessary to invoke the Source when we can experience the Source. Even these are just letters and words. I’m basically telling the reader to put faith in my words and experiences, which blatantly contradicts what I am trying to say!
Raja Yoga is a way to experience what is meant to be experienced. Words only go as far as the Abyss. I sometimes refer to Yoga as the spiritual path of the atheist, for it does not immediately recognize or venerate any deity. I only warn the atheist that one of the side-effects of applying oneself to self-mastery is that it may expand the mind beyond the confines of atheism.
PAA: Thank you Jason for sharing your journey with us.
The triad of transformations entails the purposeful manipulation of jing, chi/qi, and shen (alternatively referred to as vital, astral, and mental for adherents of Hermeticism), representing an age-old meditation methodology of profound significance.
But strangely enough, it is not often clearly explained or even acknowledged in many training methods (I am well aware it is a model you see in different systems my point is that it is usually hidden behind walls of unnecessary theory and the point is lost), really in modern times it is thanks to practitioners like Sifu Mark Rasmus, Jake Green, Bob Smith (Sixty Skills) that we have clear teachings like the three transformations openly available to all. When I started though all the energies where discussed the experience of each and the process of identification was very much a trial-and-error process, reading Rawns ‘A Bardon Companion’ and checking his message board, not to forget the Bardon groups on Yahoo. But still nothing ever explained things so simply as the Three Transformation, which thanks to Sifu Mark Rasmus, I learned in 2012, and more recently Sixty Skills made available forfree via Perseus.
Why is it important?
Because it allows practitioners to manipulate their energy matrix actively. By learning how to perform the three transformations, practitioners gain the ability to convert vital energy into astral and mental energy, and vice versa. This capability enables them to control their energy and specify which form of energy they choose to work with, whether it’s at the vital, astral, or mental level of existence. This control over energy is fundamental for practitioners of meditation, yoga, and magic, as it empowers them to enhance their physical performance, develop out-of-body experiences, and navigate different levels of reality more effectively. All of this is absolutely key but is rarely clearly explained in any of these traditions.
Passive versus Active Transformation
As mentioned above, the Three Transformations allows you to actively transform these energies. As humans there is already a passive transformation taking place. We need vital energy to live and to sustain all our physical and energetic systems. This is normal and is also something that happens passively in many systems, over a period of time changes occur as large amounts of raw material get transformed and in turn feel their awareness and capacity to think much improved. But it is unplanned, passive and far slower than consciously planning the process.
Why is identification important?
As emphasized at the outset, discerning these energies often entails trial and error. In certain systems, practitioners may remain oblivious to these subtle forces, whereas in Hermetic and Yogic traditions, these energies are codified. However, they often linger as mere theoretical constructs, devoid of direct experiential understanding for many. This knowledge vacuum underscores a missed opportunity, as once comprehended, the process appears straightforward, requiring not decades, but a mere weekend to grasp. Armed with this understanding, exercises assume a newfound depth, where anticipation of requisite mental energy precedes endeavors, yielding superior outcomes. Mastery lies in deciphering the puzzle pieces, discerning factors that influence exercises positively, thereby enabling strategic planning and ensuring ready access to vital, astral, or mental reservoirs. For example, if needing to study for long periods of time we need mental energy, knowing this in advance we can prepare accordingly.
How do we identify Vital Force?
To identify vital energy, it’s essential to understand its characteristics and manifestations. Vital energy, also known as “jing” in traditional Chinese theory, is the energy generated by living things. It is associated with physical vitality, strength, and the basic life force present in all living beings.
Here are some ways to identify vital energy:
Physical Sensations: Vital energy often manifests as physical sensations of vitality, vigor, or strength. It can be felt as a sense of aliveness or vitality in the body.
Health and Well-being: Vital energy is closely linked to overall health and well-being. A person with abundant vital energy tends to have good stamina, resilience, and resistance to disease.
Physical Performance: High levels of vital energy can enhance physical performance, including strength, endurance, and agility.
Energy Practices: In energy practices such as qigong or yoga, practitioners often focus on cultivating and harnessing vital energy. Sensations of warmth, tingling, or pulsation may indicate the presence of vital energy during these practices.
Mind-Body Connection: Vital energy is not just physical but also has mental and emotional components. A strong mind-body connection, where mental clarity and emotional balance support physical vitality, is indicative of abundant vital energy.
By paying attention to these signs and engaging in practices that cultivate and harness vital energy, individuals can become more attuned to its presence and effects in their lives.
How do we Identify Astral Energy?
Identifying astral energy, also known as “qi” or “chi” in traditional Chinese theory, involves recognizing its subtle and dynamic nature, which influences emotions, sensations, and consciousness. Here are some ways to identify astral energy:
Sensory Awareness: Astral energy often manifests as sensations in the body, such as tingling, warmth, or a sense of expansion. These sensations may occur during practices like meditation, qigong, or energy healing.
Emotional States: Astral energy is closely tied to emotions and feelings. Heightened emotional experiences, such as joy, love, or serenity, can indicate the presence of astral energy.
Intuition and Gut Feelings: Astral energy is associated with intuitive insights and gut feelings. Pay attention to subtle inner guidance or instincts, as they may be influenced by astral energy.
Energy Flow: In energy practices like qigong or tai chi, practitioners focus on cultivating and circulating astral energy throughout the body. Sensations of energy flow, such as waves or currents, can indicate the movement of astral energy.
Mindfulness and Presence: Astral energy is often felt most acutely in moments of deep presence or mindfulness. Cultivating awareness of the present moment can help individuals tune into the subtle vibrations of astral energy.
By developing sensitivity to these signs and engaging in practices that cultivate astral energy, individuals can deepen their understanding of its presence and effects in their lives.
How do we identify Mental?
Identifying mental energy, also known as “shen” in traditional Chinese theory, involves recognizing its abstract and conceptual nature, which influences thought processes, intellect, and consciousness. Here are some ways to identify mental energy:
Thought Patterns: Mental energy is closely associated with thoughts and mental processes. Pay attention to your thought patterns, including analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and creativity, as they reflect the presence of mental energy.
Clarity and Focus: Mental energy often enhances clarity of mind and concentration. When you feel focused, alert, and able to comprehend complex concepts, you are likely tapping into mental energy.
Intellectual Insight: Mental energy facilitates intellectual insight and understanding. Moments of epiphany, deep understanding, and realization indicate the activation of mental energy.
Abstract Concepts: Mental energy deals with abstract concepts and ideas beyond the physical realm. Engaging with concepts such as philosophy, mathematics, metaphysics or even your tax returns involve the utilization of mental energy.
Problem-Solving Abilities: Mental energy enables problem-solving and decision-making processes. When you effortlessly devise solutions to challenges or make logical deductions, you are leveraging mental energy.
Inner Reflection: Mental energy supports introspection and inner reflection. Engaging in self-analysis, contemplating existential questions, or exploring personal beliefs involves the activation of mental energy.
By becoming attuned to these signs and engaging in practices that stimulate mental energy, individuals can enhance their cognitive abilities, deepen their understanding of themselves and the world, and cultivate greater mental clarity and insight.
Path of Enlightenment
The path of enlightenment, refers to the movement of consciousness from a more gross or physical state to a more refined or spiritual state. This journey involves the transformation of energies from vital (jing) to astral (qi) and then to mental (shin) levels. This is something you experience every time you perform the Three Transformations. Here’s a breakdown of the path of enlightenment:
Transformation of Vital Energy (Jing) to Astral Energy (Qi): Initially, the practitioner focuses on converting vital energy, which is the energy emitted by all living beings, into astral energy. This conversion process allows the energy to become less constrained by time and space, as astral energy is timeless.
Transformation of Astral Energy (Qi) to Mental Energy (Shin): Once the energy has been elevated to the astral level, it can then be further refined into mental energy. Mental energy operates beyond the constraints of physical form and space, representing concepts and ideas without spatial limitations.
Benefits of the Path of Enlightenment: Engaging in the path of enlightenment enables practitioners to actively manipulate their energy matrix and gain control over their energy. This control facilitates experiences such as out-of-body experiences and enhances spiritual development.
Understanding Levels of Reality: Practitioners learn to identify and work with different levels of reality, recognizing that energies manifest differently depending on the level. By understanding and harnessing these energies, practitioners can achieve greater spiritual growth and personal development. Beyond the mental we move to Akasha and then onto Non Dual Light.
Overall, the path of enlightenment involves the conscious transformation of energies from a gross physical state to more refined spiritual states, leading to enhanced spiritual experiences and personal growth. We can also reverse this process and we get the ‘Path of Manifestation’, I am sure you can see how this would work now.
Vital Energy as a Base
As the title suggests, without a strong foundation in working with Vital Energy then we have very little resources to convert. We need the raw material so need to work on building our capacity, we then need to work on decreasing the time required to reach our maximum capacity of Vital Energy. Essentially getting to a point where we feel further breathing of that material does very little and is not worth the time spent.
Foundation for Energy Conversion: Vital energy serves as the foundation for converting into other forms of energy, such as astral and mental energy. This conversion allows practitioners to access a wide range of energies and enhance their abilities beyond their innate energy levels.
Stress Adaptation Model: Similar to physical training, working with vital energy follows a stress adaptation model. Consistent practice increases the amount of vital energy available, leading to greater vitality and resilience over time.
Impact on Health and Well-being: The state of one’s vital energy affects overall health and well-being. Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, drug use, or lack of sleep, can deplete vital energy, leading to reduced energy levels and susceptibility to illness.
Efficiency of Energy Conversion: While it’s possible to convert mental energy into astral and then into vital energy, it’s generally a less efficient process compared to converting vital energy into astral and mental energy. Therefore, maintaining a robust vital energy base is crucial for optimal energy manipulation.
Long-Term Effects: Accumulating vital energy through practices like the three transformations can have long-term benefits, including increased strength, neurological response, and immune system function. However, it’s noted that while vital energy can enhance longevity and overall health, it may not drastically increase lifespan beyond a certain point.
Key Takeaway
Understanding and practicing the three transformations of energy (jing/chi/shen or vital/astral/mental) is crucial for spiritual and energetic development, enabling individuals to identify, engage, and manipulate different states of existence.
Summary
The three transformations involve converting vital energy to astral energy to mental energy and back again, with additional transformations beyond mental energy into akashic and non-dual light states.
These transformations are relatively easy to teach because they represent states of being encountered frequently in daily life.
Mastery of these transformations is essential for advanced meditative practices, allowing practitioners to identify discrete states of existence and work with them consciously.
The process involves both physical and mental development, including the building of pathways, tissues, hormones, and neurotransmitters necessary for sensing and engaging different levels of reality.
Proficiency in the three transformations is particularly important when working with energies of planets and kabbalistic letters to avoid energetic overload.
Advanced practitioners can learn to generate energies and sensations simultaneously across multiple levels of reality, enhancing their manifestation abilities.
The ability to perform the three transformations allows practitioners to be specific in their energetic work, preventing energies from blurring and facilitating the identification and manipulation of different energies.
Learning the three transformations is crucial for preventing overwhelm and imbalance in the body and mind by shifting energies between states.
Overall, mastering the three transformations is considered one of the most practical and important exercises in the hermetic tradition, providing a foundation for spiritual and energetic growth.
This post explores the intricate symbolism and occult significance behind The Dragon Tarot deck. Designed to facilitate self-transformation through a journey of spiritual initiation, the Major Arcana cards correlate with an alternative arrangement of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life meant to change the initiatory process. The Minor Arcana suits have also been reimagined as elemental realms inhabited by dragon imagery and archetypal figures lacking facial features.
The post describes various rituals, visualizations and practices that systematically guide the practitioner through awakening their creative life force, integrating their shadows, accessing cosmic wisdom and preparing for advanced magical evocations. From mental discipline to sex transmutation, the Dragon Tarot incorporates a holistic system aimed at enlightenment and self-mastery. Ultimately, this is a deck brimming with esoteric symbolism and magical promise.
PAA: The preface describes tarot decks as “exciting and unique adventure stories” that can “pierce the veil of ‘what is’ to illuminate ‘what can be.’” How does your deck aim to take the reader on an initiatic journey or adventure leading to self-transformation? What veil is being pierced?
This description is valid for all tarots that have the quality of a tarot. Let us remember the Dragon Tarot is designed by my brother Manuel Almeida e Sousa and not by me, but I was assigned the task of writing its theory and application like if I had designed it myself. The deck reveals a stage of Initiation for each card. The principle of Initiation is that we learn to merge the subconscious strata with the conscious, and our personality with the cosmos, our individuality with the larger nature, all the while we are truly knowing ourselves and unblocking hidden capacities. This tarot is no different.
PAA: You mention that your major arcana cards correlate with the 11 sephirot of the Tree of Life, arranged according to a different formula than the Kabbalistic one. Can you explain the metaphysical implications of reordering the Lightning Flash and pathways of the Tree in this way? How does it change the initiatory process?
The tree of life seen from the formula of YHVH shows a process of creation according to polarization. Fire and water combine to form air and crystallize as earth. The initiate, however, moves through a world that has been created, all that he or she needs is to attune to it in the right conditions, therefore I use an order of work more in tune with levels of subtlety, from the finest all the way to the grosser, from fire to air, air to water, water to earth. We go from ideation to formation, from formation to actual creation, and from creation to materialization.
PAA: The Atziluth initiations for the suit of Fire seem to be about awakening the creative life force and coming into awareness of the various levels of the self. How do the rituals and visualizations systematically lead the practitioner through this process of self-actualization?
By mastering the different limbs of yoga. By mastering I do not mean becoming a master, but making the practices subject to will and discipline, having them produce the corresponding effects. There are practices corresponding to the eight limbs: vows, observances, posture, breathing techniques, sense withdrawal, focused concentration, meditative absorption, and bliss. All these limbs deepen throughout the process, when working other suits, and the best chance at Samadhi is on the last card of the deck, Chaos.
PAA: The practices of invocation and evocation are often seen as dangerous or demanding advanced magical training. What precautions or preliminary steps do you recommend for the conjuror to be able to engage with these without risk?
Before starting any invocation, the initiate goes through all initiations. Before starting evocations, the conjurer goes through all invocations.
PAA: You introduce the Horse as equivalent to the Knight in this deck. What is the esoteric symbolism and significance of the horse as a spiritual messenger or psychopomp translating between planes?
The horse is not necessarily equivalent, it replaces the military knight. The horse is free and focused. It symbolizes the spermatozoon in kabbalistic sex magic, the principle of the light that goes through and to bliss and comes from bliss. It has no rider here, just as the crown of the Tree of Life has no king. It is pure. The astral light then, clear and purified, is able to take on the archetypes that stand beyond it, just as the horse here, polarized, leads to the king and queen.
PAA: The classical elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth have astrological, alchemical and spiritual correlations in hermeticism. Can you elaborate on the astrological connections you may have drawn on for the suits and courts in this deck?
Frankly speaking, I have made no particular use of astrology this time. Not in theory, or not exposed in the written theory. It is sufficient to say each suit, in the Dragon Tarot, is composed of twelve cards. Each card represents a sign of the zodiac, and the four suits represent the zodiac in its radiating, creative, formative and elementary facets. The eleven major Arcana represent the planets.
PAA: The preface discusses ancient Iberian dragon mythology that seems to have informed the imagery of the cards. What specific legends, symbols or traditions did you incorporate and why were they meaningful to you in this context?
I am Portuguese. I work, both as a writer, musician and an occultist, with the ancient traditions of Iberia. It seems in this case Manuel and I converged.
This region was named Terrae Ophiussa, Land of the Serpent. It was said to be inhabited by serpent people led by a serpent queen. The serpent is always a symbol of initiation, it sheds its skin and manages to go around things instead of bumping into them. That is how what is occult is unveiled. We have to manage to see not what is on the other side of the glass, but what is on the other side of the mirror without closing the gate by breaking the glass.
We had many coats of arms with dragons and kings that were dragon kings. The European dragon symbolizes the pinnacle of power and mastery in each of the classic Elements: it flies the highest, swims the deepest, breathes the hottest fire and is the strongest creature on ground.
PAA: How may Shadow work, as illustrated in the suit of Fire, prepare one for the advanced practices of invocation and evocation found later in the deck? What cautions would you give about integrating and projecting these denied aspects of the self?
It’s not the integration of the Shadow work that inspires caution. Not integrating it is what is dangerous. It would eventually manifest outside of conscious control in the invocations and evocations to follow.
PAA: At the end you promise to introduce sources of “real draconic magic” that are connected to pagan animism and mysticism. What are one or two primary sources that inspired the dragon symbolism specifically? And what is their deeper occult significance?
As mentioned, I draw from the European and the Asiatic traditions. In this regard, I explore as much as I know is available. Summarizing, western dragons symbolize magical power, eastern dragons symbolize Mystical mastery. But the work of “real draconic magic” is not symbolic alone. We are approaching a tradition of paranormal contact older than all the medieval grimoires.
PAA: The preface describes how the Tarot has moved from being used as simply a game to a divinatory tool and now, through your deck, a system of spiritual initiation. What deficiencies were you seeing in Tarot practice that your deck develops or transforms?
I keep saying that although it could be said the system is mine, the deck is by Manuel Almeida e Sousa, which speaks for his part in the system itself. In popular culture tarot has become a tool of entertainment. You go to a tarologist, pay, feel the thrill, and then you forget all about it, and you better, or you will be randomly influenced by someone you do not even know. The Dragon Tarot is cast by someone who has been initiated in all cards and who has made each card into a palpable elementary. When the cards are cast, they are chosen according to wisdom and conscious intention. The tarologist in the dragon tarot turns the wheel like the captain of a ship, instead of throwing it randomly to chance and into the cliffs. The tarologist, in this sense, is called a conjurer not only because he calls on the spirits of the cards, that he has animated through magic and alchemy, but because he conjures a specific destiny at will.
PAA: Your major arcana have changed The Fool’s position to hide Da’at or the Abyss. What is the esoteric meaning behind this shift and how does it set the initiate’s journey in motion differently?
What is occult is revealing. That is the principle of occultism, to veil what is hidden so it can be perceived. There is no door to the abyss, it cannot be seen or conceived. When you place a door, and that door is the Fool (an endless lust for the infinite), you can finally enter. This is no place for the endurance of the camel. It is not endurance that crosses nonexistence, it is the madness of the leaper, the foolishness of the lover.
PAA: The Ace of Wands features a dragon biting its own tail, which you correlate with the alchemical symbol for prima materia. How are you connecting this card with the Awakening of the Fire of creativity or Will? What role does the Ouroboros play here symbolically?
As Aleister Crowley said, “Pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every way perfect.” That is: the essence of will is will, and if this essence is replaced by relating to any other thing it becomes limited to its object. Introducing the initiate to the principle of will any other way would be to doom his or her efforts from the start. We want to begin with an unlimited resource from which we can collect.
PAA: Why is the wand suited for representing Will and what is the deeper meaning of the straight line growing larger in size on the Two of Wands specifically? Are there other symbolic tools from ritual magic being depicted here?
There is nothing different in the wands depicted at the two of wands. The wands of the deck look always the same and they always grow larger in size. The straight line symbolizes a purpose free of distractions, one-pointed concentration. That it grows larger in size means the more it is practiced the stronger it becomes.
PAA: The three downward wands on the Three of Wands seem to reflect the supernals of the Tree of Life: Kether, Chokmah and Binah. What is their significance in relation to the upward wand of vitality between them?
There are no three downward wands plus an upward wand at the three of wands, there are only three wands: two downward, one upward. Although I have made no mention of these wands connecting to the three mentioned spheres, it is an intelligent connection. The two downward wands are pure will (unbound, potential) and true will (the second stage of pure will, where will towards itself becomes self-aware). This is Kether and chokmah. Now Binah is the Sphere of the first limitation. In this, will depends on vitality to operate. If the second kind of will becomes separate from the first and the two are not aligned, vitality runs out. If the two are aligned they generate the necessary vitality to permit an expression in the manifested world. The downward wands generate substance through force, the upward wands generates force through substance. In this case, the wand of vitality is purified by the infusions of will, generating willpower.
PAA: What do the increasingly complex geometric figures interpenetrating each other represent on the Eight of Wands? Why have you incorporated an eight-pointed star inside two circles here?
Manuel Almeida e Sousa has, not me. Although in the content I have incorporated all necessary elements to understand the symbolism I can figure out it is difficult to make sense of it without learning by heart all the icons and symbols that were built from the ace of wands to the seven of wands. Learning it by heart, however, is easy to the practitioners, because every element connects to the practices.
That being said, I will quote from the content and attempt to explain the text to someone looking from the outside.
The text reads:
“The interpenetration of the geometric figures forms an eight-pointed star inside two circles. To start with, the eight is the double of the four and its consequent polarization. This is the key to universal good as well as to universal evil. Before now, life was a natural progress sent forth by the interaction of different elements of awareness and manifestation, but now comes the power of choice, and the eight wands are as the eight branches of the tree of knowledge.
The inner circle represents the higher self, the second circle represents ego-consciousness, the ring formed by the third and fourth circles is the shadow wherein all things move in cycles. The triangle inside the circle of ego consciousness is the life force that it protects. In the hexagram, the upward triangle is true will, the downward triangle is pure will, they both dynamize the ego consciousness, the life force and the higher self. The square is the knowledge of all these things and their laws, but it cannot contain the shadow and it constantly expands against it. This is the key to the expansive quality of fire. Choice is, therefore, the additional upward wand, the wand of refinement, at the upper center.”
Each tarot card is a book, and Franz Bardon has shown that skillfully. So what would the theory in the book of this card tell us? Number four shows us the active and passive elements. Fire is active. Water is passive. Air is the passive of the active. Earth is the active of the passive. When we work with the eight, another measure of polarity adds. The good, the bad. The bad in the good. The good in the bad.
So this would be a book on the powers to be, and on the way of harnessing them via morals or ethics while addressing cause-effects in decision-making capabilities.
This book would explain how the first four spheres in the tree of life or solar system are quantitative, in the present context, and how the four spheres that follow are qualitative. Light, wisdom, understanding and knowledge are powers, the active power to exist and its passive power of grace, the passive power to understand and its active power to know. Then in this knowledge there is the good quality of harmony with the rules and the bad in this good is the destruction that can be caused by such rules. There is then the bad quality of being attracted blindly towards the forms the light reveals and the good quality in this is the intellectual quality to harmonize them.
The Inner circles explain the higher self moves beyond condition, beyond quality. Ego-consciousness moves under it. The power to make the best choices depends on the transcendence beauty offers the ego-consciousness, so that it can, in turn, access the unhindered quantities of the higher self. In this beauty we find Tipheret, or the Sphere of the Sun. The outer circle, described as a shadow, envelopes all of the above in the dynamic distortion of time (yesod/moon). This means passive and active, good and bad may change positions according to the emanations of this distortion, and now they are relative, not solely universal.
At all costs, the ego-consciousness must differentiate itself from this distortion if it is to have any sort of continuity, and so its choices take into account the preservation of its vitality, which is to say the preservation of the potential vehicle of the higher self, for depending on the quality of the choices, more and more the vehicle is refined to accommodate the causal plane.
PAA: The preface mentions a fluid condenser that will be created from the second, negative deck. Can you explain what the alchemical fluid condenser is and its relationship to this black and white mirroring?
That is not exactly the case. First, the so-called negative cards do not represent the reversed cards so to speak. They are negatives just as the astral plane can be seen both as a negative of the mental plane and of the physical plane, the so-called umbral. However, these cards are more or less superfluous. Why? Because the fluid condenser is not created from this deck. It is made in equal parts of: angelica, sage, lime-tree flowers, cucumber skin, melon seed, acacia blossoms or leaves, chamomile flowers, lily flowers, leaves or roots, cinnamon flowers or bark, leaves of nettle, leaves of peppermint, poplar leaves, leaves or flowers of sweet violet, osier leaves or bark, and green or dry tobacco. To this, the conjuror must add his semen or her monthly blood. The conjuror then dips the white cards in the fluid condenser and lets them dry.
These white cards are the negative of the black cards, the black cards are the original cards. This has no relation with good and bad, or Bardon’s white and black soul mirrors, or the tree of life and the tree of death. One can dispose of the negative of the cards altogether and use any material capable of absorbing the fluid condenser and it will still work. As a matter of fact, one can even dispose of all the herbs and use blood or semen alone, prepared alchemically and mixed with glue, for instance.
What is of the outmost importance is that the cards have copper or tin as their back, and that an elementary (servitor in chaos Magick) corresponding to the living structure of the card is deposited in it and fed from time to time. I tell the reader to trim thin laminate of copper or tin, but one can simply insert a coin inside what constitutes the card.
Get things done. It may take one or three years just building the physical deck with magic, but after the whole deck is fully alive its power will be hard to believe even to other magicians who have never tried it.
PAA: The Major Arcana card depicting the Temple actually aligns with Kether, the first Sephirah. How are you connecting the readers’ completed initiations from the suit of Fire with their readiness to enter the spirit realm through the Temple?
The suit of fire is the suit of will and the temple is the conjuror’s will. It is in the realm of light, in the realm of will without opposition, in the realm of victory over the murky waters of condition, that the archetypal world is witnessed directly. Once the temple is built, the spirit arrives. The intelligence of this spirit is portrayed by the Asian dragon, indicating supernatural powers, qualities, might, and virtues. This means the initiate is ready to become a magician, because he or she shines like a God ready to fall, like thunder.
PAA: Death features prominently on the Magician card and you identify this Major Arcana with accessing Cosmic Wisdom. What role does the archangel Gabriel play in this imagery through the symbol of the crow?
In medieval imagery and in some magical traditions today, the crow, being the most intelligent talking bird we have not only in Europe but probably in the world, symbolized the mental body. This comes first from Celtic and Norse magic. The head of the magician leaves him in the form of a crow, and that is how leaving the material body in the mental body was practiced.
Crows were always, in European traditions, connected to death as well, and in great part for the same reason. They announce the spirit world tearing the veil that separates the mental plane from the material plane.
The crow is called the bird of the word because the mind is the carrier of ideas, and particularly ideas/forms as seen in Plato and later adopted by Christian Theology as the Word, with capital W.
I do not speak of the Archangel Gabriel, there is no mention of Gabriel in any part of the book. I suspect your cunning made the connection. Gabriel is the announcer, the carrier of the messages of God, but how he operates is by causing understanding. He creates the emotion and astral environment for the Word to inhabit. When he blows the horn, he causes a certain vibration, more than a particular idea, and this vibration becomes the gateway for a certain idea. The same analogy applies to Gabriel’s presidency over birth.
PAA: How are you linking the fixed fire, represented by the Ace of Wands, with the mutable water in the Cups? Does the fluidity connect on an elemental level and what is the transfer of initiatory knowledge?
Shortly but succinctly, between the suit of fire (wands) and the suit of water (cups), there is the suit of swords (air). The mutable emotions and the fixed will find common ground in the intellect, in the mind that is both still and volatile.
PAA: The early Iberian dragon mythology seems to associate the dragon with the serpent, relating it to awakening powers in the land. What symbolic role does dragon imagery play in magical/spiritual awakening for you?
When we awake, we come from being in the dark to sight of what surrounds us, which we call the land. The awakening of the spirit is visionary. But it does not see the land. When the land awakes, it sees the same as the spirit upon awakening. We call it the liminal. There is no magic or spirituality without this space between spaces, this state between states.
That being said, when our visionary imagination starts to awake we often have waking dreams of dragons, in the East and in the West. In the West, when, in the so-called age of freedom fantasy was again encouraged in the seventies and boomed in the eighties, we saw a great rise of visionary artists painting dragons, writers writing about dragons, movies, etc. In Asia, where animism was well kept, that has always been the way. I, personally, was often visited by a dragon when I meditated under the sun and was fourteen years old. It spoke so intimately that it probably was an earlier manifestation of my holy guardian angel, since such an intimate communication would only reappear under the holy guardian. The visits and their content would lead to my first book, which is kept at the shelf.
PAA: The Major Arcana show figures without visible facial features. Why is the effacement of identity important at the level of accessing cosmic awareness or acting as Magician/Priestess?
Figures without visual facial features are not a common element of Manuel’s designs in the Dragon Tarot. I personally applaud the idea, and have applied it in a romance. The idea of the effacement of identity is still crucial, though, in the Arcana called Magician (Mago) and to act as a magician/priestess or to access cosmic wisdom. The concept is to, again as Aleister Crowley suggested, “Bind nothing! Let there be no difference made among you between any one thing & any other thing; for thereby there cometh hurt.” And “Every man and every woman is a star. Every number is infinite; there is no difference.”
What is being said is that the magician’s acts are the acts of the divine, ideally, not his own. The effacement represents vacancy of mind. We are used to think of vacancy of mind as “I am not thinking nor disturbed by thoughts.” This is enough and more or less what Franz Bardon requires. However, Aleister Crowley goes a bit further in this regard and in his pursuit of Samadhi. Here, vacancy of mind means there is no self and no object, or rather no difference between self and any object as no difference between any two objects. There is not the observer not the observed. There is no silence and silent one. No vacancy and no mind to have vacancy. It all has transcended. For this reason, the magician in his or her circle finds no opposition: there is nothing to be opposed, only self, only awareness, everywhere and in everything. This is what we may call cosmic awareness. Being in the circle is being faceless. Hearing the discourse of cosmic wisdom begins by knowing that death has already solved all problems.
PAA: The spiritualization of passion and use of sex transmutation practices connect this deck strongly to Eastern tantric philosophy. Can you explain more about bringing these energetic practices into Tarot?
There is nothing particularly complex about this. A system that is not holistic and integrative of all aspects is not in my interest. We are the prime matter of our work. How can we become, without passion? How can we work wholly if sex is left out like a bad, hungry dog? What surprises me is when such things are set aside. And in Tarot, even more.
The Tarot is constituted by the play of different polarities that move the gears of the wheel. The movement of that wheel is fate and fortune, it is the result of passion. Whether it is spiritualized or not depends on you. But, what it means to be spiritualized is another question. We must suppose it has something to do with effacement.
PAA: The Mind’s ability to manifest reality features heavily – how can mental discipline leading to vacancy of Mind on the Five of Wands open one to higher contact or creativity beyond mental constraints?
This mental discipline learns to create its own space and time, and to detach from space and time entirely. I think these two possibilities open up pretty interesting scenarios for creativity and higher contacts.
PAA: Can you explain the difference in the rituals of invocation and evocation? Why do you recommend mastering invocation fully across the four worlds before engaging with evocations from the deck?
One should not evoke what one cannot invoke. If we can’t handle the power inside, we can’t handle it inside and outside simultaneously. We tend to think of evocation as something that happens out there, but that is only the case if no contact at all is achieved.
That being said, we are to invoke all cards before evoking any one of the cards because by then, the Tarot itself is the one who evokes its aspects.
PAA: How do you recommend grounding or earthing oneself again after intensely visualization-based practices that seem to shift consciousness dramatically into the astral or spirit planes?
If we are still talking about the cards in the way of working them out, we dissipate the visualizations into the feeling of certain wishes being fulfilled and similar resolutions.
If we are talking of direct work with the spirit planes of the dragons outside the tarot, I recommend being in the wild. It will ground you faster and recharge you.
We have a growing collection of free courses from various teachers. These courses give you a chance to get to know our teachers better while developing a new skill set.
In this interview we talk with Jake primarily about the subject of Reiki, but as this is Perseus we are coming at the subject from the perspective of Hermetics, from the perspective of working with various energies and intelligences. We also often talk about previous discussion points from the original interview with Jake, those discussions center around Invocation and Evocation. So, if you wonder what we are referring to it, it is this previous interview.
Interview
PAA: We know you as a Hermeticist, Meditator and Evocation specialist, and the creator of the The Evocation Masterclass. Can you share a little about your approach to Reiki and how it may differ from other sources?
Jake: My approach to Reiki is deeply rooted in Hermetic principles as taught by Franz Bardon. Mainstream Reiki often focuses solely on energy healing. The Reiki I share is a system that integrates the esoteric understanding of all three of Franz Bardon’s books without the words, languages, concepts, or disciplines that would scare most people away. Instead, I share reiki through metaphysical principles like vital, astral, mental, akasha, non-dual light, developing clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, the quantitative and qualitative keys, connecting with plants, animals, spirits, sigils, and so much more. This creates a more holistic and spiritually enriching experience heavily influenced by very advanced spiritual works without the burden of taking a long time to develop. For example, in step 9 of Franz Bardon’s book IIH, (I am paraphrasing, fact check me please LOL), Bardon suggests you develop clairaudience or clairvoyance by bringing either astral or non-dual light through your hands. You could spend many years working your way up this in the order as prescribed in the book, or you could learn how to do this with Reiki within days and develop the metaphysical mechanics to do this much, much quicker. I have adapted many of the Franz Bardon Exercises in this Reiki course to be done by anyone who is sensitive and keeps an open heart and mind. This includes the exercise mentioned above.
PAA: Would you say the primary goal of Reiki in general, is for healing or spiritual growth? Is this the same in the system you teach?
Jake: While Reiki is often seen primarily as a healing modality, I believe it serves dual purposes: healing and spiritual growth. I believe that you are the healing; not the other way around. When you learn to heal yourself by whatever tools you use, then those same skills can and will help other people. Reiki is one of those skills. In my way of sharing Reiki, it teaches you to interact holistically with every aspect of your life through the use of Reiki energy. Advanced energy work is a lot like learning a new language. When you learn a second language, the next language you learn is far, far easier. Once you learn one system of energy work, learning other energy systems or far more advanced skills happens at an accelerated rate if you apply your will and intellect successfully. After the First Three Modules of my Course, You can successfully perform Reiki energy healing on yourself and others. After that, it is all about refining your skills and being able to use this energy in dozens of different ways. After that, you learn how to connect with countless energies through hermetic principles and gain the skills of a hermeticist through your skills as someone attuned to Reiki.
PAA: In the previous interview, you mentioned having a natural affinity for working with air spirits like sylphs. Have you found that Reiki strengthens your connection to certain elemental energies? Does it help amplify your abilities with air spirits specifically?
Jake: Absolutely, Reiki has been a catalyst in strengthening my connection with elemental energies, including air spirits. The focused intention and channeling of universal life force energy in Reiki allows for a more potent interaction with these entities. They will be more or less active depending on the context I am within. Am I close to nature? Am I by the ocean? Is there busy roads outside with lots of traffic, or am I by a beautiful creek by the forest? Environmental factors play into what kind of audience I will get. One time When I was very new to teaching advanced spiritual topics many years ago, I was recording a spiritual lecture on Qi Gong when I was staying in a big city. To my surprise, many spirits and a few human ghosts kept gradually turning up quickly to watch me in curiosity, as I felt this was likely a highly unusual thing for spirits to perceive in their vicinity in that particular city. While I certainly was distracted by this at the moment, there was no animosity; they were simply absorbed and being nourished by the energy I was channeling. I now have set firmer boundaries for lower-astral spirits (with the exception of nature spirit friends) to no longer watch while I am teaching since lower-astral beings disrupt the teaching harmony and flow more readily. So usually, just familiar spirits, deities and higher-level beings participate when I am teaching. If they bring through some beneficial or humorous ideas in the spur of the moment, then they come through.
When it comes to healing, spirits can be pretty curious and assist you in the practice. You’ll find that the people you heal will naturally have spiritual resources that you can tap into. You will usually find their ancestral lineage as well either visually though quick impressions, and more clearly through your clairsentience.
PAA: You spoke about the importance of physical training for conducting energy. In your experience, does regular Reiki practice boost your overall energy levels and ability to channel energy?
Jake: Yes, regular Reiki practice has significantly boosted my overall energy levels in conjunction with regular cardiovascular exercise. For many people It’s like a spiritual workout that enhances thier ability to channel and conduct various forms of energy, not just for healing but for other esoteric practices as well. However, if your blood is not flowing regularly, then there not much any healing system or therapy can do for you. If you are exercising and taking care of your base physical needs, then Reiki can act as an elastic trampoline to skyrocket your baseline energy sensitivity levels. As someone who has been participating in esoteric training for over a decade, the number one way to conduct physical energy is by regularly exercising through aerobic and anaerobic exercise. As well as having a positive attitude and good self-talk. Oftentimes, people already have a high degree of sensitivity, but it is shutdown temporarily because of trauma, self-talk, their self-image, physical health, and problems with self-care. If you meet your baseline needs and keep doing shadowork to address these issues through journaling, working with a coach or spiritual group, a licensed mental health specialist, then it’s going to make Reiki, Hermetics, Kabbalah, and all the other tools work exceedingly better for you and others. Like I said before, YOU are the healing. When you have healed, even the smallest parts of yourself, your open-heartedness, self-love, energetic listening and presence are enough to begin healing others in a deep capacity.
PAA: How has teaching Reiki through an online course medium impacted your own Reiki practice? Have you discovered new techniques or insights through interacting with students?
Jake: Teaching online has been enlightening. The questions and experiences shared by students have led me to explore new techniques and refine my own practices. I was hesitant at first because I had heard from mentors that the success rate for giving transmissions online was low. I consulted with my spirit and my gut, which told me otherwise that those who make the decision to receive a transmission are ready and will receive it completely. I found that the success rate is more than 98%. With the remaining 2%, I recommend that they get a transmission in person. Many healers or teachers mean it in earnest when they say they experience as much healing and learning as they do from their patients and students. This has also been my experience. The more generous and completely open you are with others, the more the world is generous and abundant with opportunities.
PAA: You discussed soul mirror work being crucial at advanced stages. Is there a role for incorporating Reiki into your daily spiritual routine to raise your vibration?
Jake: Certainly, Reiki can be seamlessly integrated into soul mirror work to raise your vibration. It acts as a catalyst, accelerating the process of self-reflection and spiritual ascension. Reiki is a stream that you can connect to with any time. The principles and precepts you set for yourself will help you realign with your soul mirror work. Again, I recommend working with a licensed health professional as the first line of treatment. I also believe that Reiki is a fantastic supplemental alternative healthcare therapy. Its not a mistake that according to one 2008 study, more than 15% of US hospitals offer Reiki healing treatment at their facilities. If you know of a more recent statistic, I’d love to hear it in the article comments! You talked about releasing rigidity and finding your own strengths while progressing through Bardon’s system. How does this apply to Reiki practice? Are flexibility and intuition important? Flexibility and intuition are paramount in Reiki, just as in Bardon’s system. Reiki is not a rigid practice; it’s a fluid art that allows you to adapt and channel energy in ways that resonate with your own spiritual journey. For readers who have read through Backdoor into Heremetics, you have learned that by approaching spiritual practices as a stream, you can connect with and understand all parts of the practice much quicker. The energy stream of Reiki is very agile and highly adaptable, making it an exceptionally safe and easy framework to learn and develop a more advanced esoteric framework. We walk through that process together in the Reiki Healing Pro course.
PAA: In describing peak fire aspect experiences, you mentioned group energy work. Do you ever use Reiki in your group practices? If so, how does it enhance the experience?
Jake: I teach advanced room impregnation techniques and skills in the course. When working with groups, if I am working with more intermediate or advanced learners, I won’t exclusively work with Reiki and like to constantly experiment with different energies and vibrations. I connect with the highest levels of light and the sunsphere as a default. I love to play with energies at the higher end of the vibrational scale and split test how it affects those in the group. It is a great way to validate the effectiveness of your room impregnation skills when people report experiences that while all different and varying, closely align with the energy or skill transmissions you brought to the room. I also teach distance healing and attunements as well. Incorporating Reiki into group energy work amplifies the collective intention of all practitioners and creates a more potent energy field to tap into. It’s like a spiritual symphony where each individual’s energy contributes to a harmonious and powerful collective experience. While valid for online teaching, it is especially potent when everyone is in the same room together.
PAA: For water aspect breakthroughs, you mentioned rediscovering talents. Have any intuitive healing gifts awakened for you through Reiki?
Jake: Reiki has indeed awakened latent intuitive healing gifts in me. It has enhanced my clairvoyant and empathic abilities, allowing me to open my intuition more and treat energetic imbalances. In order to take advantage of these gifts, you still need to choose to be open, joyous, and heart-centered. You need to accept the healing insights that come to you and release old belief patterns and worries as part of the journey as a healer. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding in the long run.
PAA: You emphasized receiving transmissions from teachers as invaluable. How do Reiki attunements compare to your other esoteric transmissions?
Jake: For the beginner or intermediate spiritual practitioner, Reiki attunements are unique in that they are not just informational but also a vibrational scale. They align your energies to specific frequencies, opening up new avenues for spiritual growth, much like other esoteric transmissions but with a focus on healing and balance. And like a musical scale, the transmissions allow you to play specific notes, create melodies, and eventually create an orchestra of different energies, sounds and vibrations. Like the Buddha said, for 80,000 people, there are 80,000 different medicines. The wider your spectrum of healing tools and energies, the more you can tune into others and assist them in their healing process.
PAA: You aim to help students avoid the suffering you experienced starting out. How can Reiki aid newcomers to have an easier, more joyful path?
Jake: I found Bardon’s work to be incredibly frustrating when I started out. It wasn’t until I started reaching out to mentors that had completed Bardon’s work that I started to see that there was more than one way to completing it and gaining the skills necessary to be a highly effective Hermeticist. I released when I came back to Reiki how Hermetics could turn Reiki into a fully-fledged system for going through the major parts of the Initation process. My hope with the course is to give people an advanced Hermetic Initiation experience through Reiki as close to Initiation into Heremtics without all the weight, karma and baggage that’s attached to Western esotericism. As much as I both appreciate and honor spiritual traditions, the more new, the more direct, and the cleaner the energetic transmission, the closer it is to universal truth. The universe is ever-expanding, as is our human and spiritual potential. For Psychic development to occur, if looked through a lens of evolutionary biology, it is necessary for us to develop at the cutting edge of human capacity in every domain of our lives. When the Buddha speaks about “expedient means” this is one of many ways I like to interpret his words. That’s why It took a 220-page book as well as a 30-hour long course with over 400 video lectures to construct and develop this Reiki healing framework towards completion.
PAA: You encourage applying practices to everyday life. What are some ways you incorporate Reiki into daily routines or activities?
Jake: I use Reiki to cleanse my living space, charge my food and water, and even enhance my meditative practices. It’s a versatile tool that can be applied in numerous everyday scenarios.
PAA: In the interview, you spoke about your background with nature spirits and magical experiences from a young age. How do you view Reiki in relation to those early magical connections? Does Reiki allow you to deepen those relationships or access similar energies?
Jake: Reiki serves as a bridge between my early magical experiences and my current spiritual practices. It has allowed me to deepen my relationships with nature spirits by serving as a harmonious channel of universal energy. You will find that good-intended nature spirits will be in support of you developing spritual energies. If you start practicing around your home and you have trees, plants or wildlife in your vicinity, they will absolutely take notice. It is up to you whether you are open or not to communicate with them, as they are often quite shy and fully content to remain out of contact. I recommend you practice Reiki with plants and trees, as this is one of the most immediately rewarding spiritual practices you can ever do. There is nothing else on Earth that will support your spiritual growth more than a tree, especially when you become connected with a complete forest network. You can have every spiritual technique and transmission in the world, but it is no coincidence that many, many people who attain enlightenment and other highly advanced spiritual states under a tree. It acts as a super transformer, grounder, antennae and battery that opens your spiritual capacities fully. Befriend the trees with love, gratitude and and open heart, and your life will be transformed very, very quickly. That’s why I dedicate many hours to go over this practice in highly-specific detail in the course.
PAA: You mentioned releasing old traumas through water aspect work. I’m curious if you’ve found Reiki helpful for emotional healing and releasing blocks? Have Reiki attunements played a role in this water aspect work for you?
Jake: Reiki has been instrumental in emotional healing. The attunements, particularly, serve as energetic resets that help release deeply ingrained traumas and emotional blocks. Reiki, like anything, is not a panacea. There is no magic pill, only a magic YOU. YOU are the healing. ;-)
In the Sigils portion of my course, you learn how you can tune into higher vibrational states of energy and release into the highest forms of light of any energy you want to work with, respectively.
PAA: When discussing peak experiences, you talked about equalizing with light realms and raising your vibration. How does Reiki help you tune into higher frequencies? Have you noticed a difference in accessing elevated states after giving/receiving attunements?
Jake: Reiki is certainly a gateway to higher frequencies and a first step into light realms. Post-attunement, I’ve noticed a significant ease in accessing elevated states of consciousnesses on command. When I began doing even more advanced hermetic work, going into deep states of transcendental mediation is exceedingly simple and effortless. In the Sigils portion of my course, you learn how you can tune into higher vibrational states of energy and release into the highest forms of light of any energy you want to work with, respectively. It’s a very simple technique and highly effective for connecting to various forms of light.
PAA: In describing your Reiki courses, you discussed successfully transmitting energies via video. How do you ensure the Reiki attunements are effective through an online medium? What signs or feedback do students give that indicate the attunements worked for them?
I use specific visual and auditory cues in my videos to facilitate the attunement process. Students often report feeling warmth, tingling, tears, or a sense of peace and euphoria, indicating the successful attunement. Often, people will report having sudden healings and major breakthroughs in their life. The most common attribute shared among them is a deep sense of wonder and joy that follows when experiencing the rapture of unlocking one of the greatest mysteries of our lifetimes: a sense of being a spirit having a human experience, feeling a deep release from the material view of how the world works and instead discovering how to merge with the mystical, to walk the line of the material and through the gates of transcendence.
PAA: You spoke about Prometheus and sharing knowledge despite consequences. Do you see risks associated with openly teaching Reiki attunements online? How do you mitigate potential issues while still sharing these teachings widely?
Jake: While there are risks in openly sharing esoteric knowledge, the benefits outweigh them. Bob Smith and I like to talk about Prometheus as a figure, as this Titan directly informed our views about what we wish to share with the world despite unintended consequences. When we both began to start sharing transmissions openly, to our suprise we did not face the karmic backlash we were expecting. Instead, we found that we actually recieved far more positive energy merit. In my experience, the more I share openly, the more these energies are far more receptive to me and thus people I share with as well. Because Bob and I were the first to share these types of advanced esoteric energies online openly, we weren’t sure yet if people were ready for them or not. I know I was advised not to, except for the voice in my head, the feeling above my crown, my heart and gut. And Bob. That’s all the Consalation I needed. I ensure that my courses are structured in a way that provides a solid foundational understanding before diving into advanced techniques, minimizing misuse. In addition, Reiki has very little capacity to be misused. The energy and patterns instilled in the energy are very self-regulated and help people come back to balance. People typically only hurt people if they are unbalanced. This may not be true for the truly sociopathic and antisocial, but those are further and fewer than have ever existed in human history. I’d love to hear any other insights you have around integrating Reiki practices into the esoteric/Hermetic work discussed in the interview. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experiences! Reiki serves as a harmonious complement to esoteric and Hermetic work. It’s like the yin to the yang of more intense magical practices, providing balance and healing. It addresses the microcosm before getting into the macrocosm of spiritual work. It is teaching your inner child to heal and be apart of the magic, before having the adult part of you directing and affecting it. It is the qualitative key before the quantitative key of development. It’s about learning to precisely find the right places to give your effort before compounding your practice. It’s creating a foundation of diamonds first, so you can build a structure of any strength or material on it’s grounds. What you can tune into through Reiki, you can also affect through your will. Reiki hands you a remote control to the universe. Reiki gives you and awaken you to all of these gifts.
PAA: Jake, your Reiki courses are very comprehensive and transformational. What are some of the biggest changes past students have experienced after taking your class?
Students have reported profound shifts in their emotional well-being, increased intuitive abilities, and even breakthroughs in their spiritual journeys. Some have gone on to become Reiki practitioners and teachers themselves.
PAA: Previously you mentioned that only a small number of students were unable to feel energy during the attunements. What percentage of students would you estimate are able to successfully receive attunements and start practicing Reiki healing after taking your course?
I’d estimate that about 98% of students successfully receive attunements and begin practicing Reiki healing after taking the course. The small percentage who don’t initially feel the energy often find that with continued practice and engagement, they eventually tune into the frequencies.

PAA: For new students who are skeptical, what would you say to convince them that your Reiki course can genuinely help them access and feel energy healing, even through an online format?
Jake: Skepticism is natural, especially when it comes to spiritual practices. I would encourage them to approach the course with an open mind and heart. The course is designed to provide theoretical knowledge and practical exercises, and many students who were initially skeptical have reported transformative experiences. I openly teach about concepts like the placebo effect because I am confident that Reiki can help you if you want to apply it. If you want this course to transform your life, you must make three deliberate choices. 1. Are you willing to change your mind about Reiki? 2. Are you willing to change your mind about yourself and your capabilities? 3. Are you willing to apply the practices you learn in the course and journal? Those three things are the only things you need to do to have a complete lifestyle transformation in any topic, Reiki aside. You can also narrow this down. One. Simple. Choice. “ Are you willing to commit?“
PAA: What type of feedback have you received from students who could heal themselves or others using the skills learned in your classes? What kinds of results or transformations did they experience?
Jake: The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students have reported healing from chronic ailments, emotional traumas, and even experiencing spiritual awakenings. The transformations range from subtle shifts in mood and energy levels to life-changing revelations.
After these three levels, that is when we get into the most fun parts and you will transform through a complete hermetic-style initiation to transform your complete perception of reality.
PAA: Your courses offer attunements across multiple Reiki levels. Can you explain what students gain from receiving attunements at each new level? Why is it important to progress through the levels?
Jake: Each level of attunement serves as a stepping stone to deeper spiritual understanding and healing capabilities. Level 1 focuses on self-healing and basic techniques, Level 2 introduces distance healing and advanced symbols, and Level 3, or the Master Level, empowers students to attune others. Progressing through these levels allows for a comprehensive understanding and mastery of Reiki as both a healing art and spiritual discipline. After these three levels, that when we get into the most fun parts and you will transform through a complete hermetic-style initiation to transform your complete perception of reality.
PAA: What separates your Reiki course from others that are available online? Why should someone choose your class over a free YouTube video or blog post they might find?
Jake: The depth and breadth of the course content, combined with the integration of esoteric wisdom and practical exercises, make this course unique. Unlike free resources, this course offers a structured learning path, personal support from myself, and a community of like-minded individuals. Plus, when you pay for something with money, you are placing your second most valuable currency you have in combination with your most valuable currency––time. Unfortunately, many of us spend our time on hundreds of distractions every day, and far fewer of us spend our money on things that directly benefit our spiritual practice. When time and money are combined, that produces the best synergy to make any change far more possible. For myself and the spiritual practitioners that I’ve met that are exceedingly successful, the vast majority have spent no less than tens of thousands of dollars and countless more hours towards their craft. Of course, time and money aren’t spent all at once. If it is something you want and need for your spirit to awaken to the next stage of your evolution, you will find a way always. As soon as you make a choice, the money you need will come.
PAA: For someone brand new to energy healing, what could they expect to realistically achieve after completing your entire Reiki course? How long might it take to become proficient?
Jake: A complete beginner can expect to achieve a basic understanding of energy anatomy, the ability to conduct self-healing, and even perform essential healing on others. Master-level Proficiency can vary from person to person, but with consistent practice, one can become proficient within a few months. I hold nothing back and give you absolutely everything I know so that you can easily surpass my own abilities in energy healing. Nothing would make me happier and more personally fulfilled than if someone were to practice, journal, and use what they learn from their direct experience with the course to surpass my own skillfullness. That’s what I want for everybody in earnest. There is no merit in gatekeeping and far less enjoyment when holding anything back that could aid you. As soon as I give absolutely everything I know and have away to others, the universe rapidly gives me more. And then I have to give even more out to stay balanced and keep up the internal growth!!
PAA: What additional resources or support do you provide students after they complete your course? Is there an active community where they can ask questions?
Jake: I offer ongoing support through Q&A sessions and an online community where students can share experiences, ask questions, and even find practice partners. As previous members of my courses know, I answer every question in great and precise detail and never hold back. Ever. I want to get you to the end goal as quickly as possible. I also am well-known for always giving far more than what I promise in courses. While my Invocation course states that it has 100+ lectures, it has closer to 130+ in total because I don’t like to brag about the additional bonus videos I constantly add, or the coaching platform I added, or The personalized voice notes that I send out to students who contact me regularly. I simply love it when people feel they gained way more value than what they paid for. Personally, I am very shrewd with my purchases, and I tend to see myself from that point of view when I am trying to create the most value possible though my teachings.
Are there any student testimonials or examples you can share that really showcase the value of your Reiki training? What impact has your course made for past students?
One student, after completing the course, reported that they were able to heal a chronic back issue that had plagued them for years. One woman I did a healing on, who had been receiving regular healing treatments with an assortment of high-level psychics and energy healers, could reverse early menopause after one session. I have a Google Sheet with countless testimonials I received over the years, but I’d hate to brag, and I would need to contact them for their permission first before sharing. Many people have mentioned a significant improvement in their anxiety levels. They’ve also had newfound spiritual experiences and abilities awakened. Most all heart’s open and they have a newfound appreciation for life. All the positive feedback I have received speaks volumes about the transformative power of this Reiki course.
I hope this comprehensive response provides the insights you’re looking for. Feel free to reach out for further clarification or questions. Thank you for your interest in my Reiki Healing Pro course.

First up is Introduction to Magic by Andre Consciencia. You may have heard whispers of secret societies, arcane rituals, psychic abilities, and ancient mystical texts full of power. Andre will peel back the curtain on the world of real magic. Discover how silence, stillness, and inner work can unlock altered states and connect you to the objects of perception, allowing you to cause change. Forget obscure jargon and elite gatekeeping – this course makes magic accessible. Over 13 sessions, the mystery dissolves and magic becomes a practical science. Follow along with care and integrity, and you’ll gain skills to successfully work long-forgotten spells and rituals.
André lives in Moita, Portugal and has been a dedicated practitioner of magic and mysticism for more than two decades.
He met Fraternitas Hermetica (an order based on the works of Franz Bardon) while still a minor and had an initiator that stood even after the order vanished. He also has worked with his old initiator for 20 years. He has experience of other magical systems such as AMORC, Order of Michael’s Grail (with roots on Dion Fortune), Thelemic Golden Dawn, Astrum Argentum, the Typhonian OTO and the OTOA-LCN.
André teaches neo-shamanism and has his own active group of practitioners. Aside from his shamanic path, which he puts to use as a simple way to reach the uninitiated, he has been through the hermetic magical systems of Franz Bardon, as well as through systems presented by Rosicrucian orders and Thelemic organizations, still being a member of the Chaorder of SilverDusk and a member of the Inner Council of the Horus Maat Lodge, in which he holds the Portuguse Nexus.
Next is The Three Transformations by Sixty Skills, unveiling the ancient art of transmuting jing, chi and shen. Hermeticists (Franz Bardon students especially) called this process vital to astral to mental, while Chinese sages spoke of physical to subtle energy. It’s not just for enlightened masters! This course reveals how to actively engage in these energy conversions yourself. Learn why you’d undertake the three transformations, how to move from gross to subtle energy, where to place the energies, and more. While these practices seem like relics of the past, they’re fundamental to the human experience. Join Sixty Skills to revive your connection with these living traditions.

All of the primary skills needed to engage any of the various meditative phenomena are available here via distance learning. If you have the work ethic, then no secrets are necessary.
Finally, Hermetic Fundamentals by Perseus Arcane Academy trains you to put teachings into action. This is a practical doing course, with each new lesson spread over 2 weeks to build discipline. Many collect information without gaining ability. Knowing is not the same as doing! This course challenges you to follow through, completing exercises regardless of doubt. It is a text course, no exciting videos. Can you persist through the entire period of 10 lessons? Success here trains the mindset to fully master esoteric skills. You’ll move beyond intellectual knowledge into applied magical practice.
With Initiation Into Hermetics, Franz Bardon has created a masterpiece of magickal ascension, giving all the necessary instructions and theory to rise to adepthood. The book itself has an energy all to its own. However, getting through the steps of Initiation Into Hermetics can prove to be difficult, arduous work for many. It’s tempting to slack off on the exercises when life seems to get in the way. It’s common to stay on one or two steps for years on end or indefinitely. Most people that start the work never seem to get through the first three steps.
This class is designed to walk you through each step, and share with you my own experience of going through the first three steps. Yes, there are shortcuts, hacks, and additional tips for achieving magickal equilibrium.

As always if you have questions about anything related to Magic, Evocation, Kabbalah etc, just get in touch. We may not always have the answer, but we will do our best to put you in touch with someone who does.
This marks a great occasion, as a long time ago in 2012 I went out to Thailand as I was feeling stuck with my then approach to Initiation into Hermetics, I had heard about Sifu Mark Rasmus, corresponded with him which assisted me greatly, and generally heard great things from those who had made the trip.
I spent a week being shown a multitude of approaches that would speed up progress and open me to new ways of approaching the exercises. It was so good that I returned a few years later (generously assisted by one of his students, Joey). Again, I was given so much to work with that I was able to make quick progress and overcome any challenges in the exercises I faced. All thanks to Sifu Mark.
We always kept in touch and so now after 12 years since first meeting him and training with him we now have his 6 progressive courses on Perseus (The first is up, the others to follow). So, if you want to go through a similar training to what I did in 2012 but now in 2023 much improved in every way then head over to Perseus and have a look at the first course of six, Elastic Force Chi Kung.

For those committed to profound self-cultivation, this program provides unique access to the transformative wisdom and practices of the internal arts lineage.
So as you can see, I am a little excited to have Sifu Mark on Perseus as it marks more than a decade pursuing this path since training with him over in Thailand. His teaching is truly life changing as can be seen in the lives of his many successful students, he holds nothing back in person, in his book or in these courses. In many ways I think the courses are ideal as in person it is hard to absorb so much information in a short time. So having the course allows you go over what you learned in person as much as you want until you get mental clarity and practical understanding.
This as mentioned is the first of six progressive courses, course 1 and 2 can be taken by anyone but the others really require some background and foundation built in the student in order to be most effective. This first course builds the foundation and allows you to have practical experience of Sifu Marks teachings. This practical experience is so important and is what makes Sifu Mark and his students so successful, as the forces he talks about are not just theorized about they are truly experienced by partner work, multiple partners of different shapes and sizes. There is no room for kidding ourselves. Even working on your own via the course there are ways for solo trainers to ensure they are keeping their feet on the ground and truly developing skills.
So if you would like to experience Elastic Force Chi Gung, build a foundation or hope to visit Sifu Mark for live training in the future then this first course is ideal.
Robert Allen has been a practicing ceremonial magician for more than half a century; his life in magick began when he was 13 years old. In his late teens, he joined the Ordo Templi Orientis under the direction of Kenneth Grant, which is currently known as the Ordo Typhonis. He is also a senior member of the Temple of the Silver Star (TOTSS), a Golden Dawn patterned Thelemic Order, and an Instructor for the TOTSS academic track. In addition, Robert is an Initiate of the Jane Wolfe lineage of Aleister Crowley’s A.˙. A.˙.
On a more secular note, he holds a degree in fine art, and he is a former dancer, choreographer, physical theater artist, and director, working with significant choreographers and directors in the United States and Europe. His current focus is on teaching and education, having taught at major universities in the US, and he is a published author on performance technique and visionary art practice. Robert is a certified teacher in the Krishnamacharya Yoga tradition, as well as in the Michael Chekhov acting method. More recently, he has been integrating theater technique and magickal practice in a project called Performance Movement Magick. These workshops are ongoing and provide the practical foundation for his writing and pedagogy.
Special thanks to Robert and to his publisher ‘Theion Publishing‘ for their assistance and for providing an updated biography.
PAA: Welcome Robert, could you please provide a brief introduction.
Robert: I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I moved here about a year ago, so I am still pretty new to the area, but my immediate objective is to establish my teaching and workshops in this community. From art student, to dancer and physical theater artist, to theater director and finally magick teacher; I have grown to appreciate how I have really only done and been passionate about one thing regardless of how I have gone about it. The most recent version of myself understands that ‘artists are facilitators’. This is also a very good definition for a magician. It doesn’t matter anymore who is on stage if I am somehow still necessary to the expression of a creative energy that is busy transforming the world. Teaching just happens to be the most subtle and powerful form of this energy I have found to date.
What do I teach? I teach traditional methods. My innovation is how I combine performance technique with magickal practices. For this reason it makes sense when a student of mine describes the work as ‘what Robert teaches’ or ‘Robert’s classes’. This means that my methodology as a teacher does not fit into any one tradition comfortably. For better or worse, I am an outsider when it comes to what I offer my students. If there is such a thing as the ‘Robert Allen method’ (god forbid!), it has to do with how I integrate the elements and how I provide instruction, which I believe accounts for the enthusiasm of my students. In the end, should I be of any help to you or anyone else in learning magick you should eventually be able to say ‘I practice the <Insert your name here> method’.
PAA: You started early with the Ordo Templi Orientis under the direction of Kenneth Grant. How did this early training influence you?
Robert: Sometime in the 1970s I wrote to Israel Regardie. It was a short correspondence, but profitable. I initially asked him for information about the several magickal orders associated with Aleister Crowley. He sent me the address for the OTO in England under Kenneth Grant. I wrote to the address and received instructions on how to apply. Out of respect for the proprietary rights of magickal orders, I won’t discuss what I received directly from the OTO after joining, but I did come to a fuller appreciation of Grant’s work, and his interpretation of Crowley’s work, mostly because I was buying and devouring his TyphonianTrilogy as they became available.
It was an interesting time. Had I been more connected and aware of my immediate environment I might have been conflicted as to which order to join, Grant’s OTO or the emerging Caliphate under Grady McMurtry and Phillis Sekler.
A major theme in the Trilogy is communing with higher orders of being: secret chiefs, the Holy Guardian Angel, disaffected deities of antique eons, transdimensional aliens… This comes directly from Crowley’s playbook of magickal seances with his various scarlet women. Along these lines I too began to have experiences of a decidedly Typhonian character, but I lacked the larger context in which to make much use of them.
Time passed, and being as old as I am now I have had plenty of time to recontextualize what was happening, and to appreciate why it was important work. Though one of the things I began to suspect at the time was the connection between metaphysics, any metaphysics, and the practices associated with it—every practice maps out a world view and a metaphysical structure that it is attempting to exploit. In my workshops I teach a variety of techniques that I have found promote what is best for obtaining potent and valuable visionary experiences. For what it is worth, these now form my beliefs, which are subject to change even as my methods improve, are revised, and/or are swapped out for something more potent.
PAA: You are currently a senior member of the ‘Temple of the Silver Star’. What can you share about your training and membership? From looking at the website I really like the clarity of the education they offer. Clearly defining initiatory and educational tracts.
Robert: To paraphrase one of my magickal mentors when I was researching the Temple of the Silver Star back in the day: these people are adults. Beyond that there is not a whole lot I can share. The best introductory resource is their website. Dr. David Shoemaker is the visible head of the order and is generally approachable should anyone have concerns or questions beyond what I can say here and what is posted on the website.
But I will risk a little redundancy and say that it’s a teaching order that is patterned on the original Golden Dawn. As an organization it is well managed and responsive to sincere seekers, taking the mandate to educate very seriously. I would also like to point out that while Crowley was primarily associated with two Orders—the OTO and his A.˙. A.˙.—a lot of what he was about came from his tenure in the Golden Dawn. Ergo, without this key much of his teaching can remain obscure. This was my initial draw to joining; that, and Initiation, and the highly structured and enlightened system of training they are known for.
PAA: How does your work with the Ordo Templi Orientis and the Temple of the Silver Star inform your understanding of the Western esoteric tradition?
Robert: Currently I am not a member of the OTO. Kenneth Grant’s version of the order changed its name, as well as clarifying its own specific mission at the time, to avoid conflicts of interest with other groups claiming to be the real OTO.
If you replace ‘esoteric’ with ‘magickal’ in your question above you will get a better idea of how I view these two organizations: as exemplars ‘of the western magickal tradition’.
PAA: You are also a Yoga teacher in the Krishnamacharya lineage, does this practice bring any additional benefits to your magical work or is it treated as a separate vehicle?
Robert: Krishnamacharya was a Yogi and teacher who is credited with the creation of what is almost universally understood today as modern yoga (i.e. hatha yoga), the type you will find in any major city in the world—in health spas, gyms, and in the ubiquitous yoga studio. His three protégés, Desikachar, B. K. S. Iyengar, and Pattabhi Jois, exemplify the three principal approaches to teaching hatha yoga: attention to posture, flow, and the dynamics of the individual practice.
There are many reasons and motivations for pursuing hatha yoga, and almost all of them involve a quasi-religious justification for physical embodiment—why do we even have a body(?). These discourses either elevate the physical vehicle as a symbol of all that is important in this life, or their focus is on realizing Moksha—liberation from the body. My interest in this type of yoga is more aligned with the former, with a fuller appreciation of the potential of the individual while they are in the world, and in a position to make the most of it.
As a young man in high school I had a very bad relationship with my body. I had an extremely bad diet and made no effort at anything that might improve my health, like sports. As a result I experienced chronic back pain and regular cold sweats because my metabolism was so messed up. This changed when my girlfriend at the time persuaded me to begin regular kundalini yoga classes. Our teacher was a convert to the Sikh religion, Pritam Kaur. Pritam’s take on her yoga was principally devotional, and seemed to fall somewhere between the ‘body as miracle’ on the one hand, and spiritual realization on the other. Nevertheless, my experience was more of the former. There were any number of evenings walking home after her class when I was spaced out of my gourd, but what made a lasting imprint on my life was that I found I had real talent for the physical aspects of the practice—strength and flexibility; it changed my body and life, setting me up for what would eventually become a much more physically demanding career as a dancer and theater artist.
When I retired from performing I needed something that would take up the slack because it is common for dancers who perform at my level to become deeply depressed when they stop training. This is when I started hatha yoga in earnest. At this time I was also teaching theater, where I saw in my acting students many of the same problems I had experienced in high school. So it made sense that I would begin to explore the value of yoga for their sake. But even before making this innovation, my approach to actor training was mostly physical; it dovetailed with what I saw as the main thing I provided my students, a training that made the most of their physicality for greater expressive power and stage presence. So my yoga had nothing to do with a spiritual perspective, or so I thought at the time. In an essay for a recent anthology of essays on ‘movement for actors’ I wrote that yoga for actors should be about how to be a better actor, not about how to be a yogi.
But this way of talking about different ‘objectives’ for doing yoga is all wrong; it’s dualistic and assumes life, and the fullness of life are not integral to spirituality. The philosopher Henri Bergson defined the body as a ‘center of action’. This idea is supported by practice, which would suggest that both the yoga for health and physical beauty practiced by most people, and the yoga for expressive prowess that I taught are both possibilities that can only happen if you have a body. How this is approached by the individual is a matter, not just of aptitude and interest, but also of age and physical limitation due to injury and genetics. Iyengar infamously slammed his hands down on a waist-high table and kicked up into a perfect hand stand at his 90th birthday party. Still, he too got old and died. The end of his life was as much a part of his yoga as his youthful mastery because the body wants to struggle for the handstand, or the equivalent effort specific to each individual, to push against resistance with the objective of overcoming whatever presents itself as a limitation; and it also wants to grow old and to live through the experiences of inevitable loss of function and vitality that comes sooner or later. It was designed with all these experiences programmed into itself.
What Magickal practitioners come to understand, hopefully, is that all of this body-telos is a symbolic enactment for anyone discovering and executing their True Will; even as it is also the dynamic informing Initiation, which is made possible because we have a body that changes, that suffers a constant stream of little deaths ultimately culminating in its final disappearance at the end of its days.
As a teacher, my body extends into those of my students. My experiences and expertise with yoga are part of my teaching today even though I rarely instruct anyone in the proper way to assume a Warrior Two asana anymore. If the histories of my peers in dance are anything to go by I too will be getting the inevitable hip and knee replacements. It’s a truism in most contemporary yoga practice that it only gets “real” after the student injures themselves. It is at this point they will either go deeper into the practice, achieving the true, subtle relationship with their physicality that hatha yoga is ultimately concerned with, or quit. This is because yoga, like everything else, is an instance of something larger. What I am trying to articulate is how it could be dance, or yoga, or rock climbing, but insofar as we are talking about the great opportunity of having a body and being in the world, all of these things are just individual solutions to how the body is instrumental in expressing the true essence of the embodied soul. This is the time of the body, this is the time when action can happen in truth, when a magickal gesture changes the universe!
I haven’t taught yoga in a very long time, but the teacher training I did still informs how I work with the individuals who turn up in my classes and workshops. This is because there is a profound physical dimension to proper magickal technique. The insight from being a professional body for so many years changed me in fundamental ways: I know when a person is not integrated in their performance, magickal or theatrical; and I know how even the simplest, seemingly non-athletic, non-physical gesture can sometimes be a true and powerful expression of the soul. I experience this failure or success of my students in my body as a kinesthetic reality; subtle expression is still physical no matter how ethereal we imagine it to be.
I will end with another quote from the previously mentioned article on movement for actors:
“A number of other fairly common physical trainings for actors that I am aware of were born of dysfunction, as an attempt to overcome an idiosyncratic set of identified problems. This is a troubling legacy because the logic of such systems is ultimately burdened by reductive goals—the necessity of removing undesirable characteristic X or lessening characteristic Y—and these come dangerously close to asking less of the actor. By contrast, yoga has benefitted from its origins as a spiritual discipline that asserts as its goal a kind of perfection that, while ultimately unachievable, nevertheless encourages actors to see their craft as always asking something more of them.”
It’s a sentiment I feel is equally applicable for anyone interested in pursuing, or who is already a part of, a magickal practice/tradition.
Book
PAA: Now let us look at your new book, what inspired you to write this groundbreaking work, Imago, and how did your background in the aforementioned magical traditions influence your writing?
Robert: The book finally becoming a reality at this point in time is hard to separate from the limitations around physical contact imposed by the pandemic. I am not a professional writer in the sense that I am constantly writing books and articles; instead I give in-person workshops, which were not possible for several years. This allowed me to spend more time making the book a reality. But the book was nonetheless a serious project for me even before the advent of Covid-19. As important as the workshop or classroom format is to what I offer, a book presents a number of special opportunities specific to the genius of that medium. In essence, it is an extension of my larger preoccupation with teaching, and it allows me to teach in ways that are not so easy in a studio setting.
The actual ‘try this at home’ techniques I provide only take up about a fifth of the overall book itself. The rest is concerned with questions, discussions, and examples of what the method might actually entail, as well as speculations about the deeper reasons for why the reader might consider experimenting with it. For this reason the book is divided up into discrete sections that make a whole when taken together but are also meant to stand alone. The more immediate inspiration for this approach was the collected essays of the art critic Susan Sontag, who is not a figure we commonly associate with magickal practice. The individualized sections were meant to be invitations to participate in a speculative process designed to prepare the mind for serious work, a sharing of my process without insisting on any definitive belief about the nature of the work. I felt this was the best way to give shape to the fact that magick is first and foremost experiential and performative, not dogmatic. The exception to this approach was the chapter on practices, but even there the first and simplest of the techniques is presented as more or less the whole technique. The creative and resourceful adventurer might need little or nothing more than this simple description of how to activate the memory body (my term for the astral body).
PAA: You state that image should be at the heart of the western tradition – could you expand on this point?
Robert: Actually I believe you are quoting an insightful appraisal about the book that was made by the publisher. I never stated it this way, though I don’t disagree with it. And I am assuming you are also asking specifically about the magickal tradition? Adding ‘magickal’ to the equation, I will go on to assert that this tradition should also include the history of art. It’s what makes the west uniquely western in my opinion. And there, as simple as that was, I have placed image front and center to the discussion.
Of course, there was a time when the arts, the sciences, writing, and magick were all the same thing. Considering them as separate disciplines, it is possible to lay them out as so many circles to see where they overlap. The first and most important thing to notice is that magick is not its own circle, but can only be found where the other three domains intersect. But we are playing here with visual metaphors, so let’s try another arrangement where we give magick its own circle, which we can do because we are now past the historical point of western fracture, when all of these disciplines became effectively separate domains. What we have now are only two players that still betray any significance toward each other, magick and art; and they overlap almost completely, the very thin slivers where they don’t being practically nonexistent.
Iamblichus will affirm that the highest magick, called theurgy (divine action), is the transformation of chaos into cosmos. And this strikes me as a pretty good definition for art practice as well. Appropriately, the important acting teacher and theorist Michael Chekhov advised his students to study architecture, to visit the great European cathedrals, monuments, and palaces that were also great works of art. The idea was to internalize as intensely as possible the symmetries and eternal ratios of place. In this way the body of the actor was improved, brought into better focus as an image and elevated in terms of its outward expression by exposure to something higher, which in turn translated into more impactful performance. It is also very good advice for anyone who might be attempting a similar enhancement of their magickal body. Art does this if you study it, and even more so if you begin to make art yourself.
Well actually, this kind of internalization is already happening all the time because this is how we create our reality in the moment-to-moment. But for most of us it happens in that subliminal dimension where autonomic processes are largely maintained. As with breathing, we can take conscious control, but for the most part we don’t have to think about it since the habit is firmly established, and so breathing just happens. The problem with this is that as long as this integration of the environment remains an autonomic activity, the image we are building is haphazard, even defective—we are not internalizing great art. What is created as a result of this subliminal activity is the image that is our soul, a common thing of no great distinction. Taking charge of this process, which happens with art, is where we make positive improvements to the body of light. The perfected magickal body (memory body, astral double, body of light) is sometimes referred as the diamond body. Magickal ritual acts directly on the refining and hardening of this image. This is also happening when art happens. There are some mystical traditions that attempt a wholesale rejection of images, but they are rare, and it tends not to turn out well for those involved. In the west, the image was originally central to all magickal ambition. To the extent that it isn’t the case now is a serious problem.
PAA: Following the previous question, how does your book Imago explore the relationship between this image, vision, and understanding in magickal practice?
Robert: It concerns what is commonly called astral projection. This is an unfortunate designation because so many readers will already have some idea of what that means. In my opinion almost everything ever written on the subject, except for a few limited instances, is mired in unhelpful assumptions, gnostic metaphysics (dualism), and logical fallacy. For those of my readers who are “burdened” with a healthy skepticism, these defective writings form a barrier to taking first steps in the practice. And for those who are not overly concerned about its inherited metaphysics, or its genuine value as a practice, these individuals will eventually find themselves in a philosophical dead end that threatens the veracity of magick itself.
But everything is rooted in image(s). And I mean everything… These images are not necessarily visual; they can also be built up from any of the five senses; the visual sense just happens to be dominant for most people, and is what occurs to them when they think of an image. It is also how memory works, by serving up images; and by extension it is how perception works, by decoding the flow of information provided by the sensorium via memory, thereby resolving this information into recognizable images.
We think we actually see something outside of ourselves when we are looking at something outside of ourselves; we are only a little bit less confused when we imagine something in the subjective darkness behind our closed eyes. It’s all imagination, the image-making faculty. This does not mean whatever we happen to be experiencing as an external phenomenon isn’t real. Rather, it extends what we understand as real about common, sense-based perception to things we previously only imagined were imagined! Understanding comes when we can finally parse how every image can be both a revelation and an illusion.
PAA: Could you provide more information on how your work with early Neoplatonism and its use of images as magical symbols of transformation has influenced your magickal practice?
Robert: Neoplatonism is what we call a historical period of philosophical discourse characterized by a revival of interest in the foundational works of Plato. The movers and shakers of the movement did not see themselves as ‘neo’; as far as they were concerned, they were Platonists. Looking back, I feel it is important to respect the differences between the individuals who made up the movement, because they never stopped being philosophers, and would sometimes disagree with each other; in other words, Plato’s writings were not a sacrosanct body of literature where all the important philosophical problems of human existence had already been worked out. They were a place to start from and refer back to when needed. The thing that united these philosophers was the centrality of the human soul, which was identified with the images of what they would have called the sublunar world. A more in-depth reading of the important players will show significant differences in attitudes toward the soul, specifically between what might be termed early Neoplatonism and late. Starting with Iamblichus the movement turned into something more than a philosophers’ club, it now involved ritualized magickal practices designed to reconnect the soul to its divine source. This was characterized as religious practice; a major concept at the time was that of the ‘cosmic soul’, which was identified with the Greek goddess Hekate.
I doubt that it is now possible to work with Neoplatonism because we don’t know exactly what theurgical practice looked like. Also, I am not a pagan despite my love for Hekate; the Neoplatonists were pagans, but I relate to her more as a metaphysical reality, the Anima Mundi, than as a patron goddess who helps me in life. What we have today instead of old school Neoplatonists are people who, because of their obsession with the imagination and the power of images, express in their work a deep sympathy for the core philosophical and magickal precepts of late Neoplatonism. I am one of these people.
The Wikipedia site on Neoplatonism used to include a list of contemporary Neoplatonists. A bit presumptuous perhaps, which may explain why it has been removed, but it nonetheless identified major trends by contemporary thinkers that are in fact Neoplatonic in spirit. The names on the list included the psychologists Carl Jung and James Hillman, the Islamic scholar Henry Corbin, as well as the philosopher Henri Bergson. I could extend the list quite a bit, and do so in my book by including many artists. In the book I go on to contrast Neoplatonism with that of dualistic Gnosticism, a pernicious religious philosophy still very much a part of the western mindscape. In that tradition images are evil, which is why, because of their fearlessness in working with these allegedly toxic materials, all artists are by definition Neoplatonists, some more self-consciously so than others.
I am part of this tradition, which came alive for me when I was able to express what the essential Neoplatonic teaching was about in my own work; if this doesn’t happen for you, then you can assume you have understood nothing of the tradition. To do this for myself I had to trace the historical antecedents of the tradition as far back as possible, without recourse to mythology or wishful speculation. In terms of magickal literature, pseudo-authors like Solomon and Hermes Trismegistus are all little more than literary devices dating back to the first few centuries of the common era. Significantly, from more or less the same historical period, there were individuals who signed their civil names to their writings on the subject. And these just happened to be Neoplatonists. The foremost was Iamblichus, who I consider the first magician in my tradition. Not much has really changed since his time. The discussion around high versus low magick is still happening; the value of magick ritual is still being justified on its benefits to the soul; and progress is still defined as commerce with superior orders of intelligence, like the Holy Guardian Angel.
The image-base of the tradition, while heavily implied in the works of Plato (especially the Parmenides), was the soul of historical Neoplatonism, foregrounded in Iamblichus’ justification for Theurgy, aka magick, On the Mysteries. This same magick survived into the Renaissance as the astral magicks of Ficino, Pico de Mirandola, and Giordano Bruno. This woefully incomplete list also includes the seership of Edward Kelly and the Universal Magical Agent of Eliphas Levi, which are all further examples of the current that finally made its way into the Golden Dawn, itself a summing up and a rehabilitation of the various threads of the western magickal tradition.
In terms of the tradition, image has always been the medium and the catalyst for every type of magick, especially the kind I practice, the magick of Initiation. This is also what we find in western theater, which was my ‘day job’ for most of my adult life. Both magick and theater require a respect for technique, and reverence for the power of expression, and both are equally concerned with many of the same aspirations for the transformation and enlightenment of the soul. In my teaching I make the most of the technical innovations from the artistic and theatrical worlds I moved in during that part of my life. The masthead on the Performance Movement Magick website advertises ‘Ritual Magick for Performers and Performance for Magicians’.
In the initiation rituals of the Golden Dawn, one of the very first things an initiate ever heard was “And the voice of my higher soul said unto me ‘let me enter the path of darkness; peradventure, thus shall I obtain the light’.” Pure image, pure theatricality!
PAA: In what ways does your book Imago provide a practical step-by-step guide to vision magick as a foundation for all esoteric practice? Does the reader require some background? Or ability to clearly visualize?
Robert: If you can recall what you had for dinner yesterday, you already have enough skill to begin this work. Nevertheless, it is assumed your powers of visualization and concentration will improve as you practice the methods outlined in the book, even as you may want to begin additional practices that will enhance these powers of mind because, simply put, more is more. Hopefully I adequately address what are often unhelpful expectations of the reader, enough to get them over that initial hump of just making a start.
For what it is worth, everything in the book is something we can all do, even if it can be done better after a little experience and practice under one’s belt; I call it a ‘practice’ for this very reason. Everything is presented in a step-by-step fashion to avoid confusion, and to make it absolutely clear that this is not beyond anyone’s ability. It just happens to be in the nature of the work that the first, simplest exercise contains the whole of the technique; if you can animate the memory body (my term for the astral body), there is no limit to where you can take it. Let’s not forget that most historical magicians had little more than some very basic indications outlined in a book to go on. Still, after presenting a simple, easy way to access the technique, I go on to elaborate how it can be developed, providing some tools from the performance studio, my workshops and private workings, and from more traditional occult sources.
In my workshops I try to be as nondenominational as possible. This is not always possible since some of the best techniques are identified with clearly established traditions. When this is the case I will stress the underlying principles informing specific gestures. These principles are almost always revealed as stock powers of the body-mind complex. This complex is innately visionary, fulfilling its highest potential when visionary seeing is happening. From the divinatory revelations of the astrologer or tarot reader, to the final projection of the alchemist, to the Enochian or Goetic magician’s interrogation of the angels and spirits, to the ecstasis when someone is possessed by a god, it’s all visionary seeing. Getting out and exploring the astral plane is only the beginning; in the end the very physical world around you should become theophanic. Eyes open or closed, it is the same thing that is happening; eyes closed just makes the envisioned process easier at first because we tend to imagine the imagination has more agency when the eyes are closed.

PAA How do you integrate theater technique and magickal practice in your project called Performance Movement Magick?
Robert: The artist and the magician are interested in the developing the very same powers of mind, and they subscribe to the very same measures for determining success, whether they know it or not. This is not an argument or a belief system; it is simply a practical concern for what works, and then for what works best. As such, the techniques I reference flow back and forth between both worlds: magickal practices are taught to the artist/performer, and practices from the art studio and theater world are shared with the magician.
Let me give an example that I think will illustrate what I mean. The playwright Maria Irene Fornes, once considered the most important living American playwright, is famous not just for her plays but also for a writers lab where she developed exercises for writers experiencing writers block. I had the opportunity to learn these exercise when I was studying playwriting with a protégé of hers at Columbia University.
These exercises are shamanistic in form and execution, using ‘death’ imagery to bring the writer to the border crossing between the conscious mind and the unconscious; from this place the practitioner opens themselves to voices from the other side. Success in this exercise manifests as encounters with willful entities, where the playwright becomes more of a medium than a creative artist. I have successfully adapted these exercises for my workshops that deal with spirit communication, and I have found them to be effective and powerful, near fool-proof for establishing contacts on the inner planes.
PAA: How does your work with radical avant-garde theater artists like August Strindberg and Heiner Müller relate to your exploration of the magickal imagination?
Robert: Since my audience is principally made up of magickal folk I find it useful to point out how much the arts have to say to this community. If I were writing a book for artists I would probably have reversed the equation and referenced magickal personalities with the aim of mining their wisdom for the benefit of my artistic readers. Strindberg and Müller are masters of image. Their insight, their degree of initiation if you will, is embedded in the works I have chosen to feature in Imago. They form the basis for a deeper discussion on the nature of image, as well as images as agents of transformation.

We have long term practitioners waiting to share their experience with those wanting to begin or deepen their practice in Magick, Evocation and Kabbalah
Today we have Ryan DeBlanc on the blog. I noticed Ryan wrote a really nice post on Kundalini that was shared by one of our mutual friends. I contacted Ryan to discover he was super friendly and very willing to answer some of my questions for the blog. So huge thanks to Ryan for spending the time on these questions.
Interview
PAA: Please provide a brief introduction.
Ryan: First of all, thanks so much for having me on your blog. I really enjoyed the articles you sent me and I’m glad you asked me to participate.
Before getting too far into my introduction, I’d like to provide a brief disclaimer out of respect for the systems I practice: I haven’t been given the clearance to teach in any of these systems yet, so I don’t want my answers to be overly associated with them. Some of my opinions may differ from what they would say. My opinions also change over time as I continue to develop, as I believe they should for all practicioners.
With that out of the way, here’s a brief introduction and history of my time practicing internal arts:
I’ve always had a high sensitivity to subtler aspects of reality, and I’ve felt a strong pull towards the spiritual path for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, my awareness of energy and certain psychic senses were overwhelming. Due to being raised near Salt Lake City, Utah, in a family that was a bit overly paranoid about mental illness, this kind of thing was really looked down upon. There was concern that I was schizophrenic when I was little, which was thankfully discarded after visiting psychologists. My family always had the best intentions for me and I have no hard feelings about it whatsoever. These days, looking back on my childhood makes me laugh. Life is funny.
It took me a long time to find proper guidance for internal arts and spiritual cultivation. I went through many systems that either didn’t do anything or made me sick through improper practice. Thankfully, I eventually ended up finding safe, effective, and proper instruction.
The first system I found was Adam Mizner’s Heaven Man Earth Taijiquan. I was lucky enough to have a Heaven Man Earth teacher just a few hours away from me. I began my era of proper training with him. Nearly immediately, it explained many things about my life and began to teach me how to develop. I’ll always be very grateful to him for teaching me and to Adam Mizner for creating his system and being available to his students.
The second system I found was Damo Mitchell’s Lotus Nei Gong. Damo’s instruction through the online academy has also proved to be a great gift. Damo’s knowledge of internal arts is vast. To me, he also demonstrates a very high level of skill both with his practice and his character. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to interact with and learn from him.
The third system was Hermetics. I didn’t actually seek this one out. A teacher/highly skilled practitioner saw where I was at with my internal development at the time and offered to take me under his wing and learn Hermetics, in order for me to keep progressing at a steady rate. He completely blew my mind immediately. He’s also a highly skilled Qigong and Taijiquan practitioner.
PAA: Hermetic/Evocation and Kabbalah – What are you able to say about these subjects?
Ryan: My instructor’s approach to Hermetics seems to be a bit different than how some others approach it. Rather than solely focusing on the magic that’s so alluring and tempting for so many, he really emphasizes integrating release into practice. This is something I personally believe to be incredibly important, especially if one’s aim is liberation. The psychic and magical training is fascinating, but I believe that one needs to be able to move past the tendency to become obsessed with it in order to stay on the path to liberation. I see what I’ve learned from him as a set of tools to use to aid me on my path, as well as markers of progress.
I’ve received quite a few direct transmissions from my instructor, and we’ve since become good friends. More recently, I also started to practice with another Hermetics teacher as well who is directly under Sifu Mark Rasmus. I also consider him a good friend.
PAA: How big a role does mental training and the development of concentration have in your practice?
I’m of the opinion that mental training is very important for any spiritual path. Training be able to maintain one-pointed concentration for extended periods of time is vital. With time, my training has allowed me to become more and more used to it.
These days, I’ve started to be able to release into it rather than needing to bring my attention back to a meditation object every five seconds. I believe that being able to release into concentration rather than fighting yourself for it is something that’s needed to achieve meditation.
Another aspect of mental training that I consider vitally important is character development. Character development isn’t solely mental training, but I feel it’s easier to categorize it under that umbrella for the purposes of this interview.
Being able to see thoughts and character traits for what they are allows you to begin to disidentify from them. Nearly all of us have negative thoughts and character traits. Those who can’t begin to disidentify with them will always carry their negative personality traits in their bodies. That condition prevents release, and to me, release is one of the most important aspects of the spiritual path.
PAA: From seeing some of your social media posts you mention about the difference between the aforementioned mental training and real meditation, could you expand on this and provide your definitions of what would be considered meditation. The wording you use ‘it is very rare to find someone who has achieved meditation’, so do you see meditation as the result rather than the process.
Ryan: I’m a fan of calling things what they are to avoid confusion. The spiritual path is tricky enough as it is, so I believe that any form of distinction we can get our hands on is helpful. I initially got my definition of meditation from someone who trains with one of the most respected Buddhist meditation masters in the world.
To me, meditation is complete absorption. This means that all sensations and all perceptions leave. You’ve merged with God, Dao, The Absolute, or whatever you want to call it. I don’t really believe it’s possible to describe the state of meditation because there’s no content that can be understood mentally. Even calling it a state feels incorrect.
The closest I’ve come to being able to describe it is saying that it’s like being in dreamless sleep but somehow still “conscious” and “bathed in light”. That still feels like a highly inaccurate description, but it’s the best I can do. The first time it happened, right before I entered the state, I thought I was going to die. Still, I released into it anyway. Maybe I’m a little crazy after all!
I have no formal education in Buddhism and no Buddhist teacher, so I can’t say for sure, but I’ve been told by people I respect that I’ve entered this level of Jhana.
Despite having been told that, I approach all aspects of internal arts as if I’m a total beginner and that I’ll never know anything for sure, especially when it comes to meditation. I know that I’m no better than anyone else and I don’t want to fully assume I’m correct without a qualified teacher confirming it for me.
Avoiding delusion is important, so I can only go off of what people I really respect tell me, and what things objectively seem to be. I don’t want to put ideas into anyone’s heads or spread misinformation.
PAA: One post that caught my eye originally was the common occurrence of people mistaking types of Chi/Energy for a Kundalini Awakening. Could you expand on this point and provide some insight into what are huge differences? Also could you expand on what motivated you to write the post?
Ryan: What motivated me to write that post is that Kundalini Yoga is actually the first way I began to make myself sick through not understanding what I was doing. I was told about what genuine Kundalini Awakening is from a teacher I really trust. Through my own experience, I’ve also found that what he said is true. Well, when I say my own experience, I mean nearly everything other than actual Kundalini Awakening.
Kundalini is not the energy running up your spine that you feel during a Kundalini Yoga class. What you’re feeling there is an elevated amount of Yang Qi (a kind of electrical energy) moving through the spine into the brain. This can cause major problems if the body isn’t open enough to allow it to move out of the brain, which is the case for the vast majority of people.
It can cause constant panic attacks, fry your nervous system, and mess with your organs, just to name a few. This is exactly what happened to me. I also had scoliosis that I was told would require surgery to fix, so the amount of pain I was in from sending that much energy through my damaged spine was the most pain I’ve ever been in. Luckily, I was later able to fix my spine with Qigong.
It’s possible that the severity of my sickness was because I already had an awareness of energy long before I started doing Kundalini Yoga, but I still think that it’s a harmful practice unless one has already opened the body enough to be able to efficiently conduct energy.
From what I understand, nearly nobody has actually awakened their Kundalini. I don’t know of anyone alive that has. There may be one of two people, but they’re likely not public about it. There was a famous Yogi that brought the word Kundalini to the west, which I believe is where much of the misunderstanding comes from. If what he taught is anything to go by, he definitely didn’t awaken Kundalini either. He was mistaken.
Awakening Kundalini is absolutely insane. It’s so far down the line for the vast majority of us that it’s pretty much not even worth talking about. It’s said to be so unbelievably painful that you pass out, vomit, scream, and other stuff like that. It’s like your entire being is on fire.
It also literally changes everything about you. When I say that, I’m not talking about psychological changes, experiencing new planes of existence, or other psychic stuff. That stuff comes near the beginning of the spiritual path as far as I can tell. That stuff is fascinating, but actually pretty irrelevant for the most part if your aim is Nibbana. I believe those abilities should just be treated as markers of progress, not something to get stuck on.
Awakening Kundalini means you’re pretty much at the end of the spiritual path. Like, you’re pretty much done. Also, the Siddhi (abilities) that one is said to attain when one fully awakens Kundalini are not metaphorical. People think they are, but they’re not. To be blunt, until you come across someone who can physically be in two places at once, set things on fire with their minds, literally fly, or some other crazy things like that, then you haven’t met anyone that’s done it.
If people don’t believe any of this, that’s fine. I totally understand why they wouldn’t. I wrote that post just in case it can help one or two people avoid making the mistake I made, and avoid getting sick.
I hope your readers don’t take what I say here as discouragement for spiritual practice. You can still go very far without awakening Kundalini.
PAA: You mention there being more to the breath work, what else should people be considering when engaging in these practices?
I think that the most important aspect of breath work in the beginning is letting it properly anchor down into the lower abdomen. Most people breathe with their chests, which pretty much makes any higher level practice impossible.
The key to this practice is that you don’t force yourself to breathe with your belly; you have to allow it to happen. If you force it, you’re not really changing anything.
Wherever your attention naturally goes when you breathe is how low your breath actually is. You need to accept where your breath actually is, even if it’s all the way at the top of your chest. Just keep breathing and allow your attention to be where it is. With enough practice, the breath will sink and your attention will be drawn into the lower abdomen.
PAA: Lower Dantien – This is a big one. Real place, created place, felt, visualized? What is your opinion on this and what has led you to this conclusion?
PAA: Yes, this certainly is a big one. My opinion is that it’s not a place in the body, and that you don’t have one unless you’ve built it. To use an analogy, there’s a vacant lot where it goes, but you haven’t laid the foundation or built the building unless you’ve properly practiced the necessary internal work.
There are lots of ways for the Lower Dan Tian to develop, and some are more direct than others. Basically, to build the Lower Dan Tian, a Yin field needs to be build in the area where it goes. This becomes the container that eventually fills with Qi. If you try to put Qi in there without first building the container, the energy will just disperse.
In a way, the whole body can eventually become a Dan Tian, with a profound fullness of Qi that doesn’t disperse.
The lower Dan Tian gets more complex than just that as well, but I don’t feel I’m qualified to speak on it quite yet.
I think that two of the best ways to develop the Yin field are Taijiquan and various practices within Neigong, one of them being Dan Tian Gong. Neigong more direct in a way because you’re directly creating the field rather than just releasing until it fills. In my opinion, both practices are equally as effective. They just have different focuses. Choose the one that suits your goals.
PAA: Anything else you would like to share about any of these subjects?
Ryan: I’d just say to make sure you get your practices and information from legitimate sources. Beyond that, all I’d say is to remember to enjoy your practice! It’s a really profound and special thing to do, so keep appreciation for that. Have fun!
