# The Perfect Place for Magical Practice

This is a new upload from SixtySkills, good advice for where you practice. For details of the SixtySkills curriculum [check this post](https://staging13.perseusarcaneacademy.com/post/sixty-skills-five-part-curriculum/).

## An Unexpected Practice Place

Sometimes the best practice places aren’t places you would really expect. A lot of people like to practice at Buddhist temples and the like. However, this place just outside Chiang Mai and around the corner from Wong has been abandoned pretty much as long as I’ve known about it—and that’s been a little bit over a decade.

The energy in this place is actually very conducive, oddly enough, to physical and spiritual practice. Why that is, it’s kind of hard to say. Likewise, why this place was abandoned in the first place is also hard to say. But if you know where to look, it’s on the nature park right next to the art village outside Chiang Mai.

So, you can come here as well. It’s never secured. My friends and I would come out here to practice, usually in the early morning hours. For the most part, people always left us alone. There are occasional offerings made on the site, so you need to be aware of that and respectful of it. People have their beliefs, and as guests in these places, we need to be cognizant of that.

## Why This Place Was Good for Practice

Why was this a particularly good practice area? A good way of looking at this is the energy of the place.

- It’s in a natural environment, which is always helpful. There’s more of that etheric or life force energy floating around that you can harness for practice.

- When you’re talking about a semi-abandoned place like this, the fact that it still exists at all is usually testament to the strength of what’s here. It’s actually a very nice facility. It has long brick pathways, and during dry season it’s a lovely place to have a sit—assuming you’re early enough that you’re not baking.

You can look at the age of something, and if it’s still around after a really long time, that’s generally a sign there’s pretty good energy that can be worked with.

But that’s not the only thing to pay attention to. Just because energy is strong doesn’t mean it’s conducive to what you’re working with—or even a good idea to be there. Hanging out in certain graveyards where they do sky burial, for example, is not exactly the perfect practice spot.

## Respecting Local Traditions

Another thing I always want to mention—particularly as a foreigner visiting these places—is that you need to be aware and respectful of the local traditions.

This place doesn’t belong to me, my friends, or my students. On the odd occasion when we came out here and something was going on with the locals, we would just quietly leave. After all, this is their place in their country, and it’s up to them to maintain it.

That being said, locals in general don’t tend to use these places for what they were designed for. Contrary to popular belief, the psychic monk crew in most religious organizations is actually quite small. If you become a monk, you are far more likely to be ordained and put to work as an academic, working with lay people, as a carpenter, or even as a CPA. Big organizations need those people much more than they need a magically empowered member of the clergy.

This may sound strange because those people were the genesis of all major faiths. Other than communism, all mainstream religions are the product of another person’s esoteric experience. You need to be respectful of that.

Even here, if you look carefully at some of these trees, you can see a band tied around them. Obviously, you don’t want to disturb any of that.

## The Importance of Seclusion

We’ve covered the basics of what to look for in a practice place. Finally, there’s the issue of seclusion.

A lot of what we do at 60 Skills—or in esoteric practice in general—resembles what I call the “autism Olympics.” You look weird doing it, and that tends to be off-putting to most people. If the practices are energetically charged or ritually powerful, that will bother people even more.

You need to keep this in mind, because unless you own the place, you’re just borrowing it.

## Running Water and Natural Energy

Another thing to look for is running water. We are actually over a river here. Being near a river brings a certain kind of energy, particularly first thing in the morning and first thing in the evening.

That kind of environment is perfect for vaulting practice, as many of you know from attending my in-person training camps. We like to practice down by the river at dawn or dusk. The reason is simple: at those times, magical potential is at its greatest because the natural forces of light and dark, positive and negative, are balanced right at the pivot point. That balance makes magic easier to pull off.

Ritual magicians, largely limited to the power of their egregores or the ambient energy around them, can’t afford to be picky about where they get their juice. Practicing at dawn and dusk, near water, makes things easier.

## Signs of a Good Practice Spot

So you have several factors to consider: seclusion, silence, and the ability to practice without disturbance. In Asia, it’s not considered a big deal if you sit quietly in a temple corner and meditate. But if you’re doing chiang or other unusual practices, that might be different.

You’ll also see wildlife around here. This is a good sign that the place is energetically charged. Since this is a game reserve, the animals aren’t afraid of people. Again, all of these are good signs when looking for a practice spot.

## Spirits and Lingering Energies

One final reminder: the deities, saints, spirits, and entities associated with temples stick around much longer than you would think.

I’ve been at fire temples in eastern Turkey blazing with energy thousands of years later. Likewise, the entities associated with an earth goddess—later co-opted by the Romans and eventually shut down under Islam—were still potent and easy to contact.

So be careful what you choose to play with.

## Closing Thoughts

Otherwise, as usual, train hard and be well. What’s the fastest way to develop magically? Learn pranayama, letter magic, and proper body training. That’s the fastest way to become a powerful magician in the real world.
