In that piece, I touched on some issues that can arise with teachers, but I think these points deserve a clearer and more focused discussion. It’s surprisingly easy, even for intelligent and well-meaning people, to fall into the role of an obsessed student or a controlling teacher. In both cases, they often believe they’re doing the right thing. A teacher might truly think they know what’s best for their students, believing their own hype, while a student may feel their soul depends on the teacher’s guidance. This can lead to the views of friends, family, or partners being ignored as the teacher-student relationship takes over. Lastly, I want to explain why Perseus works with the teachers it does. These relationships are built on trust and respect. The teachers we collaborate with have spent their lives developing their magical skills while also working on their character—something I think is just as important. While we may not always share the same worldview, I trust these teachers genuinely want to help their students grow. At Perseus, we see teaching more as coaching than traditional spiritual instruction. The goal is to help students find their own path, not enforce strict ideas or control. I also value the honesty of our community—people aren’t afraid to speak up if something seems off. As a guiding principle, remember: kindness first, skills second. A truly great teacher uplifts their students rather than putting them down. ## Harmful Behavior in Communities One of the challenges in spiritual communities is the presence of individuals whose behavior disrupts harmony and undermines the group’s purpose. These behaviors can include bullying and belittling others—particularly men bullying other men, or women targeting other women—and males being inappropriate or overly familiar with both single and married women. Some individuals manipulate situations to elevate their status within the organization. Shockingly, such behavior is sometimes excused or overlooked, with these individuals even being rewarded with leadership or teaching roles. This often leaves members confused and disheartened, questioning the integrity of the community. It is the responsibility of the teacher or leader to address such behaviors promptly and decisively. Just as workplaces enforce boundaries and professionalism, spiritual communities must uphold clear standards to create a supportive and respectful environment. ## Consequences of Unchecked Obsession An obsessive relationship with a teacher can have far-reaching consequences. Students may become stagnant in their personal and magical growth, unable to think or act independently. Teachers who exploit this dynamic often take advantage of a student’s loyalty, emotional attachment, or even financial resources. This dependence can lead to disillusionment, loss of autonomy, and damage to personal relationships. The very traits students sought to cultivate—independence, confidence, and personal power—may be lost in the process. ## Conclusion A magical teacher can be an incredible guide, but it’s important to remember they’re human, not perfect.
