# Dream-Work, Seals & Initiation: Inside the Esoteric Order of Dagon

## Introduction

This has been an exciting interview to research as it is connected with the writings of Lovecraft, which I have always felt had some mysterious quality to them. So, to discover this order and then research the questions I found myself more and more intrigued.

A selection of my questions have very generously been answered by the current Grand Master of the order, if you enjoy this interview then firstly let us know and do check out the links provided to learn more about the order.

**PAA: What is the deeper meaning of *The Shadow over Innsmouth* within your system?
**
We can say each story Lovecraft wrote holds some inner meaning, but The Shadow over Innsmouth is one of those where you can’t help but notice it. As perfectly explained and outlined by my predecessor now former G.M. Tornasuk in his majestic work “The Backward Path”, The Shadow over Innsmouth is fundamentally about the descent into the deep astral waters of Abzu to reconnect with the primordial energy we left behind in our previous incarnations — reconnecting with those lost pieces of energy from our ancient and eldritch soul and slowly becoming a hybrid, having one foot in this reality and one in dreams, thus retrieving pieces from our “Monstrous Soul.”
In the story we see how those who decided to reunite with the Deep Ones started to turn into hybrids between human and fish. That is a perfect symbolic way to depict our journey and the first piece of the so-called “Backward Path.” For any deeper explanation of what our initiatory path is, I can suggest the book mentioned before; it truly is a wonderful theoretical summa of our initiatory system.

**PAA: How do members of the E.O.D. view the works of H.P. Lovecraft and his role?**
**
**In the E.O.D. we try to avoid any dogma of sorts, so it is left to the practitioner and initiate to tell about Lovecraft and his writings. But after experimenting a bit, I can say that most members do believe he truly channeled something from Beyond, and I make no exception to this. But he was not the only one — we cherish other authors’ works too. For example, we include Robert W. Chambers’ work in our system as well.
Besides the writings, we fully recognize the man’s limits. Lovecraft was a product of his times, perhaps in one of the worst possible ways. We don’t justify his racism, but we try to keep an anthropological mindset when approaching this topic. Still, we hold some respect for the man that we might consider, if not the head of the current, perhaps the one who gave it voice enough to be heard by the rest of us — truly sending out a call that we have heard.

**PAA: What is the nature of the gods/entities in your system — literal beings or symbolic energies?**
**
**Once again, we don’t hold ourselves to any sort of truth or dogma; it’s left to each initiate to discover what they feel about the entities. For sure most of us see these gods as symbols of certain kinds of energetic flux. I explained this more in depth in my article “Four Portraits of Eldritch Witchcraft” that I wrote years ago in our magazine “Strange Angles.” Others see them as gods. I have to say that most of us try to incorporate each and every view; we truly are trying to experiment with the current as a whole.

**PAA: How is dreamwork used in your initiatory system, and what other practices are involved?
**
Dream work is one of the main ways we have selected over the years to get in contact with these forces and to work on our initiatory path. We also really value creativity as a form of magick — we encourage each and every member to experiment with all sorts of art. To explain the reason for this, we encourage everything that might get the initiate to jump off the railways of this reality, as the forces of Yog-Sothothery are much more approachable in other realms or using altered states of consciousness.
But there’s a disclaimer: we don’t encourage anyone to use any sort of substance or risky behaviour to reach these states. There are two reasons for this: the first is that we care about our members more than about “results,” and the other is that these kinds of activities are shortcuts for something that should be explored more in depth. The long way is the best in our case.

**PAA: What ritual tools, symbols, and practices are central to your work (seals, writing, ceremonies, initiation timing)?**

In the E.O.D. we make large use of our seal (the eight-pointed star you can find on our website); it is the center of most of our rituals. We also make extensive use of other sigils or seals, including those forged by me and our previous G.M. and included in “Strange Angles.” Those are considered official and canonical E.O.D. seals of the 12 main entities one might work with.
We also use a lot of the stories from Lovecraft and other authors in our rituals. There are passages that might be read during a ritual or used as mantras. As for atmosphere, each does their own thing. One thing I can say about our work (and it’s mentioned also in our Manifesto, written by the former G.M.) is that most of our workings are done with the altar pointing at R’lyeh as a symbolic way to make our descent into Abzu each and every time we do a ritual. We have our own original invocations, chants, and tools that each member has to forge for certain rituals. Members are also given a lot of freedom of expression.
Some regular practice we have is the celebration of the 23rd of each month as it’s sacred to Mother Hydra. Besides this, dreamwork is incorporated as a daily practice as well as the use of our Temple of Abzu deck and Gematric system. We also have initiatory paths for one to follow with a specific deity/character/symbol from the stories of choice that must be strictly followed for one year in order to be initiated into that specific energetic current. For example, one might work with Shub-Niggurath for one year, keeping a daily practice that is set while talking about it together. This is called Priesthood, as at the end of the year-long working we consider that person as an embodiment of the energy of that god/character/symbol.

**PAA: What was the purpose and current status of the “Sovereign Dagonist” degree, and how does membership initiation work?
**
The Sovereign Dagonist degree was an external form of initiation. One could have done that before trying to join us to get more chances to become a member, or instead of pursuing actual membership if one felt it was not the time for that, if the Order did not accept them as a member, or if they didn’t feel like joining the Order. As of today that degree is no longer in use. We are aware that it is mentioned in our [Manifesto](https://esotericorderofdagon.net/MANIFESTO_OF_YOG-SOTHOTHERY.pdf), and I’m working on writing a new, updated one.
The initiation process begins with a formal request of membership by someone who is interested in our work. After a series of questions, the Grand Master (so me at this point) or another appointed member can decide if it’s a good fit or not. This is followed by preparation for the actual initiation, which takes place on the 23rd of the month.

**PAA: How is the degree system structured, what is the pace, and are there time requirements?**
**
**As of today the E.O.D. still relies on the older degree system that was put together by some of our former G.M.s. One always begins with the first degree and grows out of it at their own pace. There aren’t any time requirements as the work is difficult — since it includes dreamwork from the earliest stages of membership — and in today’s society many reasons may cause trouble with it: the lack of sleep, legal and illegal drugs one might have used in their life (which also alter one’s mind in a lasting way), and so on.
That is also the reason I am trying to build more and more techniques to create a sort of “dreaming while awake” state of consciousness, so that it can help both with working our path and reconnecting with one’s dreams. As weirdness increases weirdness, one can achieve magickal dreaming through changing their mind first while awake and by doing this changing the way their brain is working.

**PAA: How do members coordinate work as groups — is there still a lodge system?**
**
**As of today we don’t have a lodge system anymore, but this doesn’t mean we don’t work as a group. Each working is usually discussed between members who already know each other, as the old E.O.D. forum has been dismantled and the new one is under construction. Members can decide to work together for our rituals if they are close either geographically or relationally (this happens more with older members), or if they want to work on their own.

**PAA: How does the leadership of the current G.M. compare to previous leadership, what is your history, and what are the future plans?**

To be honest, I don’t really feel like there’s much difference between my leadership and that of the previous G.M. I got in contact with the E.O.D. after a lifetime of fascination with Lovecraft’s work and magickal practice.
I can tie Lovecraft to my early magickal will; it surely was something that changed my person as a whole when I first read some of his stories at the tender age of 11. Becoming Grand Master was surely a surprise; it is something I have done because of my love for the E.O.D. and our work, and even more for what the mythos holds that we haven’t yet discovered.
I have plans for the future of the Order that I cannot reveal yet, but in terms of the Order’s growth my main focus is on making people understand what we do, which is often misunderstood or looked at with prejudice. One thing I can say to people out there who might be hearing the “Call of Cthulhu” is to get in contact with me. My email can be found on our website ([esotericorderofdagon.net](https://esotericorderofdagon.net/)), or one can contact me through my social media. Talking is important, sharing experiences is fundamental, and one can never know how their experience might be seen through the eyes of someone else.

**PAA: Many thanks for your time in answering our questions.**
