# Aphantasia and the Spectrum of Mental Imagery: A Comprehensive Exploration

# Introduction

I remember ever since I started having an interest in the Esoteric and the instructions would imagine this or visualize that, I would often think OH, I am not too good at this as it felt so vague to me that the whole thing felt fake. This was the case with many modern methods, imagine this...some big creative visualization, afterwards would just feel so fraudulent. Later in Vajrayana being asked to visualize some complex deity. I started thinking about visual memory, vs creative imagery and the differences involved. I can certainly remember something I just saw, and with practice I was able to remember things from weeks, months and years ago in clear mental imagery. BUT the ease with which some people were able to visualize a colorful energy or place was still something that felt elusive to me.

At various points I talked to teachers I had, one said due to my astrology I would never achieve clear visualization. I chose to ignore this individual. and I am glad I did as my abilities are drastically improved since those days. Another group I was part of said magic was for image thinkers and if you were a word or concept thinker you needed to make the change over to image thinker. This made a lot of sense, but also I started to think a lot of this is about language. One person's clear amazing visualization is another person's clear memory. We describe things differently dependent on our normal standard operations. So I say whoever you are, have a strong belief that you can improve. A lot of it is about relaxing the force and letting the images come. Then training it, then relaxing it again. For me memory - going deeply into moment by moment memory i.e sequences not isolated freeze frames was the key, I would remember my walk and then remember all the people I saw on the way which just a few moments prior I could not recollect. Not only was I remembering but I was seeing them. I do hope this little discussion is of interest and if you have difficulty with imagery do not let it be a block.....
