# A New Light in Ancient Traditions: Inside the Egyptian Masonic Order UK

## Introduction

I’m very grateful to share this interview with the Grandmaster of the Egyptian Masonic Order UK. For those of us outside the world of Freemasonry, this conversation offers a rare window into the depth and richness of practical esoteric work available within some Masonic organisations. Founded in 2020, EMO UK is a new Order rooted in an ancient tradition—drawing from the mystical lineage of the Memphis-Misraïm Rite. With a strong emphasis on inclusivity, spiritual development, and authentic ritual practice, the EMO offers a modern gateway into the Western Mystery Tradition while honoring its sacred origins.

If you enjoy this interview then please let us know in the comments and share it with others you think would also enjoy it.

At the end of the post, we have provided links to learn more about the Egptian Masonic Order UK.

## Historical Foundations of Egyptian Masonic Tradition

**PAA: A New Order in an Ancient Tradition: Your website describes the Egyptian Masonic Order UK as “continuing the Ancient Mysteries of Initiation in an organisation free of discriminatory views – a new Order, in an ancient Tradition.” For those unfamiliar, what does it mean to be a “new Order” in such an “ancient tradition”? How would you introduce the EMO to someone in terms of its historical roots and what sets it apart from other Masonic bodies? **

We describe ourselves as a new Order firstly because we were established in 2020,  and secondly, because we fully embrace contemporary values in terms of equality,  inclusion, social compassion and unity. Although our Egyptian Masonic Rites are of  venerable age, and some of ancient origin, we have formed an organisation which we  hope will embrace love and respect for these Masonic and Arcane Traditions, whilst  being an actively welcome space for interested people of all genders and backgrounds. The main difference between the EMO UK and other Masonic bodies is our  commitment to the highly esoteric and mystical traditions of Egyptian Masonry.

**PAA: Origins of Memphis-Misraïm: Memphis-Misraïm is noted as a Masonic Rite formed by merging the Rite of Memphis and the Rite of Misraïm in 1881 under General Garibaldi. The Rite of Memphis was founded in 1838 by Jacques Etienne Marconis with a 99-degree system, while the Misraïm Rite dates back to the 1700s with alchemical and occult influences from figures like Count Cagliostro. How do these origins and historical figures shape the EMO’s current practices and identity? In what ways does the Order honor this rich Egyptian Masonic heritage today? **

We have always believed that Freemasonry works not only as a Fraternity and  Sorority, but as a formal gateway to the more esoteric aspects of Western culture;  specifically the Western Mystery Tradition. Our illustrious forebears clearly believed  the same, and so much of their work involved a conscious development of the Egyptian  Rite to support this deeper purpose. In the EMO UK, we preserve faithfully the Ritual  Transmissions that we have received, and arrange our Order accordingly, as well as  continuing the research and developmental works made by our Masonic Ancestors into  the esoteric and alchemical aspects of Masonic symbolism.

**PAA: Ancient Mystery Traditions: The EMO’s Masonic Culture page suggests that the mysterious origins of the Egyptian Rite span many ancient traditions — from the temples of Memphis, Thebes, and Heliopolis in Egypt to the Mysteries of Eleusis in Greece, Hebrew Qabalah, Druidic practices, African mysticism, Gnostic gospels, and even the Vedas — all ultimately pointing to “One Mystery and One Great Work.” In what way does the EMO incorporate or pay respect to these diverse ancient sources of wisdom? Do you see the Order as carrying forward a universal mystical tradition that underlies all those paths? **

Yes, we are certainly a form of what has been termed the Perennial Tradition, seeing the Many as aspects of the One, and understanding that Mystical Ideas and Sacred Geometries are perpetually recurrent. We believe there is a spiritual unity behind the phenomenology of human psychic and psychological experience, which we see as shining through the diverse manifestations of the mystical traditions of the world.  However, we have a very particular approach to these diversities, which we term the Roots of the Tree. The differences matter, for various reasons – not only in terms of cultural development, environment, and historical impact, but also in more subtle terms of collective consciousness, and the psychic field upon which these Traditions vibrate.  For us, there are Spiritual Forces at work in these distinct cultural forms (although they have always cross-pollinated), most constructive, some destructive; we call these Currents, and we are careful not to mix them together, even though we encourage their comparative study. We are a universalist tradition, but we are not randomly eclectic in the execution of our Works.

**PAA: Esoteric vs. Mainstream Masonry: Freemasonry often traces its symbolism to Solomon’s Temple or medieval stonemasons, but EMO emphasizes a more openly mystical, Hermetic heritage. Historically, what led to this Egyptian Masonic tradition diverging from mainstream Craft Masonry in its focus? How does that history influence your practices today – for instance, in rituals or study emphasis that might differ from a typical Masonic lodge? **

The integration of Egyptian, Hermetic and alchemical references into the Egyptian  Masonic Rites may be found in the Higher Degrees beyond the first Three Craft  Degrees, but as the Rites of Memphis-Mizraim evolved, they began to favour the  traditions of Osiris and Thoth, as well as those of Seth and Solomon in every Degree.  The Egyptian Rites are derived from the Continental Masonry of Italy, Spain and  France, rather than Anglo-Masonry which is more commonly known in the English speaking world, so they have always had a more esoteric and alchemical heritage. The  Egyptian Rites of the EMO UK still retain the classical mythos of Craft Masonry, according to the Landmarks, and much of the Ritual is identical - it is more an issue of  addition and integration, rather than subtraction or modification, especially in the first  Three Degrees, and those Degrees up to the 33rd.

## Spiritual Teachings and Esoteric Philosophy

**PAA: The “Interior Temple”: Your site mentions that Esoteric Masonry concerns itself with the construction of the Interior Temple of Hermes, Seth, and Solomon. Could you elaborate on what “building the interior temple” means for a member of the EMO? How do your rituals or teachings guide initiates in constructing this inner temple, as opposed to just working with the symbols externally? **

We cannot reveal much about this process, but there is a personal and transpersonal aspect to our Interior Temple. There is the *Lesser *Temple of the Human Body, the *Greater *Temple of the Masonic Lodge, and the *Supreme *Temple of the Cosmos. Each of these has a particular structure, and all three are analogically and geometrically integrated. If we say to you that each has more than one aspect to its form, function and  existence, we have already said too much.

> From the very first Degree, the practical exercises in our Openings, Rituals and Closings reveal a direct psychic and spiritual *mechanism*.
>
> **- M. I. Bro. Darren Rose, Grand Master, EMO UK**

**PAA: Elevating Consciousness: The EMO tradition emphasizes the goal of elevating one’s consciousness beyond the material — “to a Higher Life and a more subtle state of existence,” helping initiates “access the infinite potential of the human Mind, Soul and Spirit.” What kinds of practices or experiences within the Order help facilitate this elevation of consciousness? How might participating in your rites or studies gradually change a person’s spiritual awareness? **

From the very first Degree, the practical exercises in our Openings, Rituals and Closings reveal a direct psychic and spiritual *mechanism*. This *mechanism *is only faintly gleaned at first, but through the beautiful symbolism and graduated development of the Degrees, the Candidate is woken steadily, in manageable stages, from a state of relative slumber to one of expanding wakefulness and a consciousness of the Subtle Forces at work in our Rituals. Many of our Members have attested to the profundity of their experiences with us, not only in the Lodge of Egypt, but through the consequences they experience in their everyday lives. The expansion continues, on and on, as the Egyptian Rite Degrees are understood as more than mere ceremonial trappings. It is wonderful to watch!

**PAA: Alchemy in Masonry: Alchemy appears to be a cornerstone of the EMO’s higher teachings. How does the Order approach the teaching of Alchemy to its members? Is the alchemical work mainly symbolic and spiritual (internal alchemy), or do members engage in any practical or laboratory-style alchemical exercises as part of their journey?**

We commence our Alchemical Works in the Sanctuary Degrees, specifically the  College of Masters. First, we teach the theory and language of Alchemy, which is useful in itself as a tool for analysing the Masonic process. Then we commence Preparatory Internal Works through our *Puncti Philosophorum *which is an Occult Transmission exclusive to our Order, alongside the creation of Tinctures, Elixirs and Electuaries.  Then, once the Hermetic Senate is achieved, the Members are taught Spagyrics, and then Plant and Mineral Alchemy follow after this. We have certain laboratory techniques given to us, which allows the Member a choice of Paths, and this then evolves into the Great Work. We also conceive of the Degrees of the Order as a reflection of the Great Work, with Degrees 1-33 as the Black Work, 34-66 as the White Work, and 67 to 99 as the Red Work, with the *Citrinitas *stage between 87 and 90 as the Arcana Arcanorum, and the Chrysoprase or Philosophical Gold as the Degrees from 91 onwards.

**PAA: Integrating Hermetic Sciences: Beyond Alchemy, EMO integrates other Hermetic disciplines such as Qabalah, Theurgy, and Astrology. Could you give an example of how these esoteric sciences are incorporated into the lodge work or study program? How do these studies enhance the Masonic experience on a spiritual level? **

Masonry has always been fundamentally rooted in the Qabalah – even a casual analysis of the Passwords, etc. reveals this to be true, as does the understanding of Masonry as a Solomonic tradition. In Anglo-Masonry, the Craft stops at the Third Degree, and everything else *beyond the Craft *is seen as an independent Body for the Master Mason to investigate. In the Scottish Rite (with which we share many similarities, including an Astrological framework) and the French Rite, as in our Rites of Memphis-Mizraim, the Higher Degrees remain an integrated part of the Rite. This necessitates an increasing comprehension of *all *the influences from which the Rites were formed, including Theurgy, Astrology, Neo-Platonism, Gnosticism, Hellenism, and Hermeticism. Naturally we don’t expect our newest Members to launch at all this straight away, especially in the first Three Degrees, so our Curriculum is designed to assist everyone to study and learn, regardless of their initial level of understanding.  Then, they can progress at their own pace.

**PAA: The Great Work (Magnum Opus): In your view, what is the Magnum Opus or “Great Work” that the Order guides its initiates toward? Is there an ultimate spiritual goal that members work to achieve, and how is this concept presented within your teachings? **

For us, the Magnum Opus is a complete and synthesised Reintegration with the Divine Source, with the Universe, and with every aspect of the Human-Divine Constitution. This is both internal and external, psychic and psychological, material and spiritual. It is what we term the *Uttermost*. No single set of practices, however complex, could be enough on their own, because applying a prescriptive or descriptive apprehension of the Great Work through language or symbols alone will always fall short. The Alchemical and Esoteric Keys are essential for unlocking the Gates which bar the Way, but the Key is not the Gate, and the Gate is not the Garden, nor are any of these the One who walks therein. All an Order such as ours may do is present the Key, point the way to the Door, and give signposts in the Garden. One must have Gold to make Gold, and so one must understand the potential for the *Uttermost *within oneself before any true progress is possible.

## Organizational Structure and Rites

**PAA: Lodge Structure and Progression: Could you outline the basic structure of EMO for us? What is the significance of the Symbolic Lodge of Egypt stage, and how does progression into the Grand Sanctuary of the Holy Isles occur? **

The Symbolic Lodge of Egypt is exactly like a Craft Lodge of Anglo-Masonry in  almost every way. It has the same Masonic Symbolism, the same Signs, Tokens and Passwords, the same ritual structure, the same Geometries, the same order of progression, the same Officers, the same Masonic Tools, and so forth. It presents Egyptian Masonry in a general and ‘symbolic’ sense to the Members, so they have a foundational understanding of the Masonic Temple. The Grand Sanctuary then operates like a combination of the Mark Master, Royal Arch, Rose Croix, etc. in presenting higher level concepts and symbols, evolving from the first Three Degrees and opening up the mythology and allegory of Egyptian Masonry further. The main differences between Classical Anglo-Masonry and Egyptian Masonry are the spiritual mechanisms operating in the Lodge of Egypt, the radical symmetry of the Lodge arrangement, the use of Incense and Sacralised Water to cleanse the Lodge, the mixed gender membership, the use of Alchemy and Theurgy, and the *inclusion *of Egyptian, Osirian and Isiac references and imagery.** **

**PAA: Ninety Degrees of Memphis-Misraïm: Memphis-Misraïm famously includes ninety degrees, organized into categories like the Lesser Mysteries, Greater Mysteries, and Arcana Arcanorum. How does a modern Mason navigate such a complex system? Is advancing through many degrees a lifelong journey, and how do they build upon each other? **

In practice, we use the Key Degrees of the system as steppingstones through the complexity of the Rite, and as anchors for our Masonic Consciousness. The Great Work  *is *a lifetime’s pursuit, as it should be for something so utterly transformative and  compelling, but the Ninety-Nine Degrees of Memphis-Mizraim are designed to build  upon each other as you suggest; they also preserve the stability of the Candidate at each  stage of their Path, so they can move on, or stay put, according to their innate capacity.  There has never been a *quick *path to Spiritual Evolution and the expansion of the Soul, as I’m sure your readers will realise, but the Egyptian Rite is designed to give an occasional boost to the Psyche at certain stages. With persistence, one’s progress speeds up naturally.

**PAA: Inner Orders and Allied Traditions: EMO maintains Inner Traditions like Chivalric Orders, Martinism, Theurgical Guilds, and Hermetic Circles. How do these inner orders fit into a member’s journey? Are they optional specializations, or are they integrated with the main Memphis-Misraïm path? **

In practice, our Inner Orders function more like optional specialisations, so that if any group of EMO UK Members has a collective interest in one of our Inner Orders, they can work those Rituals, study their accompanying Lessons, and gain a complementary understanding of the Great Work from that perspective. Each of the Inner Orders is aligned *horizontally *within our Memphis-Mizraim Degree structure, creating a level of equivalence and reference, but this is the only way in which they are  integrated into the Memphis-Mizraim Path. The Orders themselves operate as separate bodies under the umbrella of the EMO UK.

**PAA: Inclusivity in Membership: EMO accepts candidates of all genders, ethnicities, orientations, and faiths. How has this inclusivity shaped your Order’s culture and dynamics? Does working together across genders and backgrounds bring particular strengths to the esoteric work? **

It certainly does! At one of our recent Festive Boards, we counted nine languages around the table, each toasting each other’s health together. There was no better feeling, especially in the current atmosphere under which we labour during this period in history. This served as a reminder of our humanity, mutuality and empathic unity, and the diversity has only benefited the quality and subtlety of our Rituals. We honour our differences, but this is easy for us, because we all share a common and unifying love of the Mysteries as taught in our Order. The Curriculum also encourages comparative study and sharing, which reveals so many more similarities and connections. For us, this is how one returns to the Substantive Root of who we are on this Planet.

**PAA: Secrecy and Transparency: Members sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement to protect Order secrecy and Member identity. Why is formal secrecy still important today, and how do you balance confidentiality with welcoming and informing new seekers? **

We are lucky enough to hold Transmissions which have been secret for a long, long  time. We are aware that the current era is one of open declaration, the demystification  of certain subjects, and a healthy suspicion of Institutions – this is to be expected; we support an openness and collectivism in the spiritual community. We share openly about our Organisation, our Rite, its structure, its subjects, its principles, its hierarchy, and its intentions. However, there are some *occulted *techniques which are only beneficial when  passed from one person to another, or to a smaller group. Some of these techniques have

Keys, which are written or concealed in certain documentation, or which are *invisible *without a practical demonstration and – in many more cases than you might think – a *direct communication*. Our Order secrecy is mainly to protect these Keys, and the identity of those who wish to seek them anonymously. There is still an important psychic and psychological protection in secrecy and silence, which makes confidentiality an essential part of life.

## Personal Development and Initiation Path

**PAA: Spiritual Haven for Growth: Your Grand Master describes EMO as a “private Spiritual Haven” for those striving to evolve their spirituality and knowledge. What personal development opportunities does the EMO offer to members? **

The EMO UK is still a very young and relatively small Order, so there are some unique opportunities to get involved in a practical way, as an Officer or a Member, or by starting a Triangle or Lodge with us. We have Senior Masons joining who are encouraged to share their expertise and wisdom with us and assist the Order in its work  and development. There is so much room for growth, as well as a great storehouse of  esoteric knowledge, documentation and technical exposition, all of which continues to benefit every Member. The energetic impact of the Rituals is remarked upon frequently.  Even as Grand Master, I have continuous “a-ha” moments, and love to share them. It never stops. I do wish to make our Order a Spiritual Haven, for the Soul’s road is hard, and good friends are few.

**PAA: Curriculum and Study: Every degree in your system includes private lectures, study planners, and even video lessons. How does this structured curriculum benefit members compared to more traditional lodge models? **

In Classical Anglo-Masonry, the motivation to study (or not) remained with the individual. Not all Masons shared the same intellectual enthusiasm or ability, so perhaps this approach allowed the men to choose how far to pursue their Masonic education.  However, Anglo-Masonry still asks that one advances one’s Masonic Knowledge every day, so there has always been an understanding that education was intrinsic to self-improvement. We require our Members to develop intellectually, philosophically *and *spiritually, so study is inevitable. Because we realise that not every person interested in these esoteric subjects has been blessed with the same educational opportunities in life, we constructed the EMO UK Curriculum to offer some support and organisation along the way. Everything is given in digestible amounts, and in due order, so that nobody gets lost, discouraged, or overwhelmed.

**PAA: Practical Esoteric Work: From the 4th Degree onward, members engage in practical esoteric exercises like Alchemical practices and Theurgical rites at home. How are these practices integrated into daily life, and how do they contribute to internal transformation? **

Most Masonic Lodges meet around 8 to 10 times a year, and often less than that. This is not enough exposure to the Subtle Forces to produce the desired long-term transformations. Even with additional study in the Higher Degrees, the daily and weekly development of one’s Energy Bodies is crucial. We instill the importance of this straight away, so that the Candidate realises what is required to begin the purification of their Interior Nature and the gradual generation of the Philosophic Stone. The practices themselves range from 5- or 10-minute daily exercises, to full Theurgical Rituals to be performed once or twice a week. A private space at home will suffice, and the tools required are minimal for the most part.

**PAA: Challenges and Pilgrimages: Higher degrees require significant personal quests, sacred pilgrimages, and esoteric research. Without revealing anything confidential, can you share an example of what such a task might entail, and how these challenges foster spiritual growth? **

There are certain Times, and certain Places. Once the Seeker has learned to read  Cycle, Tide, Current and Atmosphere, and to utilise certain Keys therein, they will find their Pathway drawing them *onward*, and *through*. This is the proper method for Pilgrimage, and its contribution to spiritual growth is clear.

**PAA: Transformative Impact: From your experience as a leader, what transformations do you most commonly see among initiates? Are there certain milestones or degrees that tend to be especially profound for members? **

Certain Degrees are most certainly profound in their impact, and so predictable in their effects that some aspects are written into the Handbooks and Rituals themselves.  As I stated previously, there are Times, Places and Keys. All any Degree Ritual may do is prime the ‘personal atmosphere’ of the Candidate to be more open to these phenomena, but it is the Intelligence of Nature and the Divine Spirit working in concert with the Human Soul which accomplishes the effects. The Key Degrees are sometimes the milestones, but not always. Typical transformations I have observed and been told  about by our Members include sudden shifts in life circumstances which remove  illusions or blockages; increased mental and psychic perception; strong energetic  sensations in the body; lucid or predictive dreams, inter-group telepathy or echoing of  thoughts; constant synchronicities involving our Symbolism; resolution of longstanding  personal conundrums or conflicts; strange moments of luck or serendipity; increased  confidence and enthusiasm, greater self-awareness and self-command; healing crises  and resolutions; stable spiritual contacts, feeling closer to Divinity, and so forth.

## Cultural Values and Modern Practices

**PAA: Principles of Light and Equality: EMO operates by the grand principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity/Sorority. How do these principles manifest in your daily culture and community traditions? **

Liberty we see manifested in the universality of our Order and its Rites, allowing our Members the freedom to explore different aspects of the Spirit. Equality we see manifested in our mixed gender policy and our commitment to diversity and social compassion. Fraternity and Sorority is manifested in the laughter and wonder that spills forth from the eyes of my Brothers, Sisters and Fellows when, overflowing with the Spirit, they realise that the Holy Grail is *within *them. This is LIFE and Life given more abundantly.

**PAA: Inclusive Language and Identity: EMO corrects gender bias in ritual language and respects preferred pronouns. Why was it important for the EMO to make these updates, and how has this inclusive approach affected the lodge environment? **

The updating of ritual language was a simple grammatical correction which has not  affected the Masonic Rituals in any significant way, mostly involving adding Sister and  Fellow alongside Brother, or saying “they are” instead of “he is” or “she is” so the  Candidate can be any gender; the characters and mythologies are the same, with some  additional mythological variations in the Higher Degrees which centre women and  female characters and matriarchs as well. Rather than a political decision, or an  arbitrary attempt to ‘meta-modernise’ the Tradition, it was simply about being fair and compassionate to anyone who may wish to join us, and to bring all genders into the  Light of Masonry *together*. By the way, everyone in our Egyptian Lodges wears the same formal black attire expected in other forms of Masonry, so if anyone is  paranoically expecting a colourful jamboree of Hippy-style abandon, they will be disappointed. We are diverse, but we are also Masons!

**PAA: Zero Tolerance for Bigotry: EMO has a strong stance against hate-speech, bullying, and divisive politics. How do you foster a harmonious, family-like environment among such a diverse membership? **

Harmony and Good-Will have happened naturally because of the wonderful nature of our Egyptian Rite, the sound structure of our administration, and the joyful and intelligent Members we have attracted. Equally, we perform background checks, and we do not hesitate to remove *anyone *who proves to be divisive or hostile, and we make no apologies for this. We seek to maintain Harmony and Good-Will at all costs, and we believe that this fosters intimacy and trust, without transgressing the due bounds of the individual, who must remain accountable.

**PAA: Modernizing the Craft: EMO has embraced digital materials and eco-friendly practices. Are there other ways EMO has innovated while still preserving the sacredness of the ancient rites?**

Thank you for framing our approach so eloquently! We still like to have a beautifully dressed Temple, fragrant incense, candlelight, stirring music, and a highly charged psychic atmosphere. We still encourage the Opening of the Inward Door – for us, this is the heart of the Sacred and the true purpose of the Ancient Rites, regardless of how elaborate or simple they were. It is typical during the early stages of one’s spiritual Path  to place great importance in elaborate costumes, baroque tools, lavish spaces and  expensive artifacts, but at best, these can only ever serve as *telesmata *for the Invisible  Mystery which, once grasped, sings forth in the simplest meadow, or beneath the curve  of a wave; one carries it *around *and *within *oneself, until the Temple is consecrate  wherever one dwells. O, Nice Things Are Nice – as a certain amusing burger-themed cartoon song has said – but our Art and Science in the Western Mystery Tradition become increasingly complex at first, but then increasingly minimal as they evolve. What continues to increase is LIGHT, both spiritual and metaphysical.

**PAA: Appeal to Seekers and the Esoteric Community: Many seekers from other Masonic and occult groups are drawn to the EMO’s mystical approach. In your view, what draws them most strongly, and how does EMO relate to the wider esoteric and Masonic world? **

I believe that the EMO UK provides a unique synthesis of the venerable traditions of  Egyptian Masonry with the potency and sanctity of a Magical Order. We have our  fraternal-sororal society and spiritual community, which is slowly growing, but we also  have the Curriculum, Rituals and Exercises to support individual development too. We consider Masonry to be universal, so we welcome visitations to our Lodges from any confirmed Master Mason of good report, regardless of their Masonic Obedience. We love receiving applications from non-Masons and complete beginners too. We are both practical *and *mystical, Masonic *and *Hermetic, and we are motivated by LOVE – love of the Mysteries, love of Egyptian Masonry, and love for each other. What more is there, I ask you?
